Enteromius afrovernayi is a small African barb described by Nichols and Boulton in 1927, known from river systems of West Africa. Like the majority of small Enteromius, it is a slender, shoaling cyprinid of warm savanna and forest-margin streams — rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby and poorly documented in the ichthyological literature. Its biology follows the typical African barb pattern: an opportunistic omnivore and egg-scattering spawner with no parental care. Data on its distribution, ecology and conservation status remain sparse.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius afrovernayi was described by Nichols and Boulton in 1927, originally placed in the old pan-African genus Barbus — a historically catch-all assemblage now thoroughly revised. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places the species in Enteromius, the genus erected to accommodate a large clade of small to medium African barbs separated from the polyphyletic Barbus through phylogenetic work in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The parenthetical authority in the current valid combination, (Nichols & Boulton, 1927), reflects this generic transfer.

Enteromius is now one of the most species-rich barb genera on the African continent, with more than 120 recognised species distributed from West Africa east to the Indian Ocean drainages. Afrovernayi sits within this broadly defined grouping; no subspecies or additional synonyms are presently recorded for the species in the standard ichthyological literature, though detailed revisionary work across the West African Enteromius fauna remains incomplete.

Morphology

Enteromius afrovernayi is a small, elongate barb of typical Enteromius build: a moderately laterally compressed body, a small subterminal mouth suited to picking invertebrates and plant matter from the substrate, and a forked caudal fin. Detailed morphometric data are not widely published for this species, and maximum size has not been precisely established in the available literature; it likely falls in the range typical of small West African Enteromius, generally below 4 in standard length.

The colouration pattern has not been described in detail in accessible sources. As with many small Enteromius, the basic livery is probably a pale silver or straw-yellow ground with darker lateral markings or a lateral stripe, but specific pigmentation data for this species should be treated as uncertain until a formal redescription is published.

Habitat

The species is known from West African river drainages. Small Enteromius in this region typically occupy a range of lotic habitats: rocky headwater streams, slow savanna rivers with sandy or muddy substrates, seasonal floodplain pools, and the shaded margins of forest streams. Water chemistry varies considerably across West Africa — from soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral streams draining laterite soils to harder, more alkaline savanna systems — and the specific habitat preferences of E. afrovernayi are not well characterised in the published record.

As a member of a genus that spans a vast range of African freshwater habitats, the species almost certainly tolerates a broad temperature range consistent with equatorial and subequatorial West Africa, broadly 72–82 °F. Data on pH and hardness for occupied sites are not available in sources consulted for this article.

Feeding

Like the great majority of small African Enteromius, E. afrovernayi is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans and worms — along with algae, diatoms and organic detritus from the substrate and water column. This generalised feeding strategy is characteristic of small barbs in seasonally variable West African streams, where food availability fluctuates with the wet and dry cycle.

No specific dietary studies have been published for this species. In aquarium conditions it would be expected to accept the same range of foods as other small Enteromius: quality flake and micro-pellet, frozen or live bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter.

Mating

Enteromius afrovernayi, in common with all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed and no territory is held beyond brief courtship pursuit. When in breeding condition a driving male chases a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, pressing alongside her briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously into the water column or among fine-leaved plants.

The eggs, once scattered, receive no further attention from either parent. The spawning event itself may involve multiple males following a single ripe female. Seasonal spawning in wild West African barbs is typically triggered by the onset of the rainy season, when rising water levels, falling temperatures and increased food supply prime reproductive activity.

Breeding

No captive-breeding records for E. afrovernayi appear in the available hobby literature, which reflects its rarity in the aquarium trade. Based on close relatives, a typical small Enteromius spawning proceeds in a shallow, well-planted tank with soft to moderately hard, slightly warm water. A fine-leaved plant or spawning mop provides attachment sites for the adhesive eggs; a mesh or marble substrate layer prevents the adults from consuming the eggs, as adults of all barb species will eat their own spawn if given access.

Eggs of small African barbs typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming within a few further days, at which point they require infusoria or commercial fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. There is no parental care at any stage.

In the aquarium

Enteromius afrovernayi is not an established aquarium species and is not known to be available through the ornamental fish trade. It has no recorded common name and is absent from major hobbyist databases and trade catalogues. Any specimens encountered would represent rare wild-collected material.

Should the species become available, husbandry would follow the general template for small West African Enteromius: a spacious tank with subdued lighting, fine-grained substrate, some plant cover and gentle to moderate filtration, kept in a small shoal of at least six individuals. Water conditions reflecting West African rivers — warm, soft to moderately hard, broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH — would be a reasonable starting point. The fish should be treated as a delicate, poorly known species until more is documented about its requirements.

Conservation

Enteromius afrovernayi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article. The conservation status of a large proportion of small African barbs remains unknown due to the scale of the genus and the limited survey effort in many West African river systems.

West African freshwater fish fauna faces broad-scale threats from agricultural encroachment, deforestation of riparian zones, artisanal mining causing heavy siltation, and seasonal drought exacerbated by land-use change. Small-stream endemics with restricted ranges are particularly vulnerable to these pressures. Until systematic surveys establish the actual range and population status of E. afrovernayi, a precautionary approach to its conservation significance is warranted.
