Enteromius alberti is a small African barb described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1939, native to the Congo Basin and its adjacent tributaries. Like many of the several hundred small Enteromius species distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, it inhabits flowing headwater streams and forest-edge rivers where it feeds opportunistically on invertebrates, algae, and organic detritus. The species has received little scientific attention since its original description, and formal data on its size, ecology, and conservation status remain sparse.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius alberti was described by Max Poll in 1939. Poll was a Belgian ichthyologist and a principal authority on the freshwater fishes of the Congo Basin; he described numerous species from Belgian Congo collections during the mid-twentieth century. The parenthetical authority notation — (Poll, 1939) — records that the species has been transferred out of the genus in which Poll originally placed it, most likely Barbus, the broad catch-all genus that was used for African barbs throughout much of the twentieth century.

The genus Enteromius was revived and expanded in recent decades to accommodate a large assemblage of small to medium-sized African barbs separated from the old Barbus complex on molecular and morphological grounds. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Enteromius alberti (Poll, 1939). FishBase may index the species under the former combination Barbus alberti or Puntius alberti in older records. Detailed systematic revision of the Congo Basin Enteromius fauna is ongoing, and the species' precise phylogenetic placement within the genus has not been resolved in the published literature.

Morphology

Formal morphological data for Enteromius alberti are sparse, and no reliable maximum size figure is available in the accessible literature. The species is assumed to be a small barb — a reasonable inference from the genus and the Congo Basin context, where most Enteromius are slender-bodied fish in the 1.5–4 in range — but this should not be treated as confirmed data for this species in particular.

As a member of Enteromius, the species likely shares the group's characteristic moderately elongate, laterally compressed body, small terminal to slightly subterminal mouth suited to picking invertebrates and plant matter from surfaces, and the typical cyprinid arrangement of pharyngeal teeth. Coloration in small African barbs often involves lateral stripes, spots, or a dark caudal spot, but no detailed description of E. alberti's live or preserved coloration is available in the sources reviewed here.

Habitat

Enteromius alberti is native to the Congo Basin and adjacent drainages of central Africa. The Congo system is the world's second-largest river by discharge and encompasses an extraordinary range of freshwater habitats: from clear, fast-flowing highland headwaters and forested streams to the broad, slow mainstream and its flood-plain tributaries. Small Enteromius in this system characteristically occupy the smaller tributaries, headwater streams, and forest-edge watercourses rather than the main channel.

Water chemistry across Congo Basin tributaries varies by substrate and catchment: forested streams tend toward soft, mildly acidic conditions with low conductivity, while savanna-draining rivers can be harder and more neutral. No measured temperature or pH data specific to E. alberti are available; typical values for Congo Basin small-stream Enteromius are broadly in the range of 72–79 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, though this is an inference from regional ecology rather than species-specific field data.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary study of Enteromius alberti has been located. Feeding behaviour in this group can be inferred from the broader ecology of small Enteromius in the Congo Basin, which are generally opportunistic omnivores. They pick algae, diatoms, and biofilm from submerged surfaces, take small aquatic invertebrates including insect larvae and microcrustaceans, and ingest plant fragments and organic detritus.

This generalist omnivory is typical of stream-dwelling barbs that exploit a wide range of food resources in seasonally variable environments. In the aquarium, similarly sized Enteromius accept fine-grained flake and pellet foods alongside live and frozen invertebrates and vegetable supplement.

Mating

Enteromius alberti, in common with all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed and no territorial defence of eggs or fry occurs. Courtship follows the barb pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, pressing alongside her to trigger the simultaneous release of eggs and milt.

Eggs are adhesive and fall among plant stems, root tangles, gravel, or leaf litter. No pair bond is formed beyond the act of spawning. Adults — including the spawning pair — may consume eggs immediately after release. Colour intensity in males typically heightens during courtship.

Breeding

No captive breeding record for Enteromius alberti has been documented in the available literature, and the species is not known in the aquarium trade. The reproductive biology follows the general barb model: eggs are scattered without parental care, and development is temperature-dependent. In related Congo Basin Enteromius kept under aquarium conditions, eggs typically hatch within 24–48 hours and larvae become free-swimming within a few days, at which point infusoria or fine commercial foods are appropriate first feeds.

Fecundity in small Enteromius is generally modest relative to large river barbs, with a few dozen to a few hundred eggs per spawning. Reliable data for E. alberti specifically are not available.

In the aquarium

Enteromius alberti is not an established aquarium fish and is not reliably available in the ornamental trade. Its care requirements can be inferred from the broader Enteromius ecology: a well-filtered tank with moderate flow, subdued lighting, fine gravel or sand substrate, some cover from plants or wood, and water in the range of 72–79 °F with a neutral to mildly acidic pH would suit the species' presumed preferences.

Small African Enteromius are gregarious and do best in groups; solitary individuals are prone to stress. Diet in captivity would likely follow the omnivore pattern — varied foods including fine pellets, frozen or live invertebrates, and vegetable matter. No specific husbandry experience has been published for this species.

Conservation

Enteromius alberti has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Many small African Enteromius with restricted ranges or limited data remain unassessed or are categorised as Data Deficient; the species' status falls into this gap. The Congo Basin, while vast, faces increasing pressure from artisanal mining, deforestation, agricultural runoff, and expanding small-scale fisheries, all of which affect water quality and stream habitats used by small cyprinids.

Without a targeted survey to determine the species' range, abundance, and sensitivity to these pressures, its conservation position cannot be evaluated. The lack of any aquarium trade presence means collection for the hobby is not a current pressure. Research on the Congo Basin's remarkable freshwater fish diversity remains underfunded relative to the number of described and undescribed species it contains.
