Enteromius bawkuensis was originally described by Hopson in 1965 under the name Barbus bawkuensis, with the type locality in West African river tributaries of the Volta–Niger system. The specific epithet refers to the town of Bawku in northeastern Ghana, near the headwaters of the White Volta. The parenthetical authority — (Hopson, 1965) — records that the species has since been transferred out of Barbus into its current genus.
The genus Enteromius is a large and taxonomically complex African clade that accommodates much of what was formerly lumped into the broadly defined Barbus. African cyprinid classification has undergone significant revision in recent decades as molecular and morphological work has broken up the old catch-all Barbus; the current Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Enteromius bawkuensis. No subspecies or geographic variants are recognised.
The species appears in some databases under the former combination Barbus bawkuensis, and older literature may refer to it by that name. No widely used common name is established in the English-language literature; it is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby.

Feeding
