Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius boboi was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1942 from specimens collected in the River Farmington, Gibi Mountains, Liberia. The original description placed the fish in the genus Barbus, the broad catch-all used for African and Asian barbs throughout much of the twentieth century. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now records the valid combination as Enteromius boboi (Schultz, 1942), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer from the original genus.
Enteromius is a large and taxonomically complex African genus separated from the old pan-continental Barbus concept when molecular and morphological work demonstrated that the African and Eurasian barbs are not a natural group. The genus accommodates the great majority of small to medium African barb species, from river-specific endemics like E. boboi to widespread savanna generalists. The type locality — River Farmington, Gibi Mountains — remains the only documented collection site for this species.
Morphology
Enteromius boboi is a small, slender barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. FishBase records 11 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays for the species, figures consistent with the broader Enteromius body plan. Beyond these meristic data and its benthopelagic freshwater habits, detailed morphological description of this species remains sparse in the published literature.
As a small African barb it likely exhibits the laterally compressed, torpedo-shaped body typical of stream-dwelling Enteromius, with a moderately forked caudal fin and the barbels characteristic of the family Cyprinidae. No detailed colour pattern description is available from current accessible sources, and aquarium specimens have not been documented.
Habitat
The species is recorded exclusively from the River Farmington drainage in the Gibi Mountains, Liberia. Available habitat descriptions characterise the environment as clear, flowing rivers and streams with rocky bottoms and abundant aquatic and riparian vegetation — conditions typical of West African upland streams draining forested hill country.
Specific water chemistry data (temperature, pH, hardness) are not documented in the available literature for this species, which reflects the limited field work that has been conducted in the Gibi Mountains since the original 1942 collection. Feeding

Small African stream barbs of the genus Enteromius are typically omnivores, taking a combination of small invertebrates (insect larvae, crustaceans, worms), algae, and organic detritus from the substrate and water column, with the precise balance shaped by local food availability.
Given its small body size and the rocky, vegetated stream habitat from which it is known, a diet of benthic invertebrates and algae scraped from rock surfaces is a reasonable inference, but no feeding data specific to this species are available.
Mating
Like all barbs, Enteromius boboi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No captive breeding of Enteromius boboi has been reported in the accessible hobby or scientific literature, which reflects both the species' extreme rarity and the fact that it has never entered the aquarium trade in meaningful numbers.
By analogy with related small African Enteromius, a breeding setup — if the fish were available — would follow the standard egg-scattering protocol: a shallow tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning substrate, slightly warm and soft-to-moderate water, and removal of adults after spawning to protect the adhesive eggs from predation. Fry would be expected to hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures and require small live foods when free-swimming. In the absence of captive populations, reproductive data remain entirely inferred.
In the aquarium
Enteromius boboi has no documented presence in the aquarium hobby. Its Critically Endangered status and extreme geographic restriction to a single river drainage in Liberia mean that the species has not been collected for the trade and is unknown in captivity.
Were it ever to become available through conservation-breeding programmes, its small size (under 2 in SL), stream-dwelling ecology, and presumed omnivorous diet suggest it would suit a modestly sized, well-oxygenated aquarium with rocky decor and some planting, maintained in warm, clean water. As with all narrow-range African endemics, collection from wild populations would be entirely inappropriate given its conservation status.
Conservation
Enteromius boboi is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. The species is endemic to the River Farmington drainage in the Gibi Mountains of Liberia — a single, restricted watershed — making it acutely vulnerable to any change in that system. Its entire known range falls within one of West Africa's most heavily logged and agriculturally converted forest regions, and the clear, rocky-bottomed streams it inhabits are sensitive to sedimentation, pesticide runoff, and water extraction associated with land clearance.
Liberia experienced severe infrastructure disruption during the civil conflicts of the 1990s and 2000s, which limited biological survey work; the species has not been extensively resurveyed since its original 1942 description. The combination of a tiny range, a degraded and continuing-to-degrade habitat, and a near-absence of current population data underpins the Critically Endangered assessment. No specific conservation measures targeting this species are known.
