Enteromius carens is a small African barb reaching about 1.5 in standard length, native to the coastal river drainages of central Africa — the Kouilou basin and Chiloango basin, straddling the Republic of Congo, the Angolan enclave of Cabinda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. A diminutive, benthopelagic cyprinid with an absent lateral line and no barbels, it inhabits the warm tropical fresh waters of these mid-Atlantic draining systems and has no history of fishery exploitation. Originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1912 as Barbus carens, it was later moved into the large pan-African genus Enteromius as the old Barbus complex was progressively revised. The species is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius carens was described by the Belgian-born British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1912 under the original combination Barbus carens. For much of the twentieth century small African barbs like this were held within the broadly defined genus Barbus, itself an enormous and paraphyletic assemblage used as a catch-all for Old World small barbs. Progressive molecular and morphological revisions have since broken that group apart, and the African small barbs are now placed in Enteromius — a name conserved for the many species distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the valid combination as Enteromius carens (Boulenger, 1912), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer out of Boulenger's original genus.

The specific epithet carens is Latin, meaning 'lacking' or 'wanting', likely a reference to the species' lack of a complete lateral line — a diagnostic feature that distinguishes it from several sympatric congeners. The species has no widely used English common name in the aquarium trade or scientific literature.

Morphology

Enteromius carens is a small, slender barb with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. Like other members of the genus it has a subterminal mouth suited for picking small food items from the substrate and lower water column. Two notable diagnostic features set it apart: the lateral line is absent (or incomplete), and the species lacks barbels — both unusual in a family where many members carry at least one pair of rostral or maxillary barbels.

Beyond these features the body form is typical of the smaller African Enteromius: moderately compressed, with a relatively plain coloration suited to a benthopelagic lifestyle in tropical fresh water. Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been documented in the scientific literature reviewed; gravid females may show a slightly deeper body, as is common in small cyprinids.

Habitat

Enteromius carens occupies the fresh waters of the Kouilou basin and the Chiloango basin — two relatively small coastal drainages emptying into the Atlantic on the western side of central Africa. The geographic range spans parts of the Republic of Congo, the Angolan exclave of Cabinda, and the adjoining margin of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is recorded as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish associated with tropical latitudes (roughly 15°N to 5°S).

As a small barb of these lowland equatorial river systems, Enteromius carens lives in warm waters that are broadly typical of central African coastal drainages — tropical temperatures and a chemistry ranging from mildly acidic to near-neutral, consistent with the forest and savanna streams that characterise the region. FishBase and allied sources do not give precise physicochemical parameters for the species; the range values for Enteromius more generally suggest temperatures around 68–86 °F and a pH tolerance from slightly acidic to neutral.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding studies are available for Enteromius carens. Small African Enteromius are broadly omnivorous, taking invertebrates, algae, detritus and plant material from the substrate and benthopelagic zone, consistent with the subterminal mouth position of this species.

In an aquarium setting a diet of small prepared foods — fine-grade flakes or micropellets — supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates such as daphnia and cyclops would be appropriate, as for other small barbs of comparable size.

Mating

Enteromius carens, as a barb, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No direct observations of courtship in this species are recorded in the available literature, but the pattern across Enteromius is consistent: a ripe male drives a gravid female through aquatic vegetation or across the substrate and the pair releases eggs and milt together in a brief pressing contact, with no nest construction and no territory beyond transient courtship pursuit.

There is no pair bond beyond the spawning act itself. Adults show no interest in eggs once they are scattered, and in confined conditions they readily consume them. Spawning in seasonal tropical river systems is likely tied to wet-season conditions — rising water levels, water temperature shifts and increased food availability — as is common across central African cyprinids.

Breeding

Consistent with all barbs, Enteromius carens is an egg-scatterer with no parental care. Eggs are adhesive and are deposited among fine-leaved vegetation, among roots, or over the substrate, then abandoned. There is no guarding, no nest, no mouthbrooding, and adults will eat eggs and newly hatched larvae if they remain within reach.

No aquarium breeding records specific to this species are documented in the accessible literature. Its small size (under 1.5 in SL) and lack of commercial aquarium profile mean it has not attracted the hobbyist attention given to more ornamental African barbs. General principles for breeding small Enteromius apply: soft to moderately hard water, warm temperatures, and fine-leaved spawning cover, with removal of adults after spawning to protect eggs.

In the aquarium

Enteromius carens is not a species encountered in the mainstream aquarium trade. Its small size and plain appearance relative to more colourful African barbs mean it is primarily of interest to specialist hobbyists and public aquaria focusing on the ichthyofauna of central Africa's coastal drainages.

Should it be kept, the requirements would follow those for small Enteromius generally: a warm, well-filtered aquarium with a broadly neutral to mildly acidic pH, tropical temperatures in the region of 72–82 °F, and a peaceful community of similarly sized fishes. Groups of six or more would be appropriate given the shoaling nature of small barbs. Fine-grade foods and some plant cover would complete a suitable environment.

Conservation

Enteromius carens is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessment 2022.2, taxon ID 63383). The species is not commercially exploited and has no fishery interest. Its range within the Kouilou and Chiloango basins — relatively small but not heavily industrialised coastal drainages — means it is not immediately subject to the large-scale dam construction or major water extraction that threatens barbs in some other African river systems.

Nonetheless, the coastal forests and lowland river systems of Congo and Cabinda face ongoing pressures from logging, agricultural expansion and oil industry activity in the region. Continued monitoring of the freshwater biodiversity of these drainages is warranted, though at the time of the most recent IUCN assessment no evidence of major population decline was identified for this species.
