Enteromius choloensis was originally described as Barbus choloensis by the British ichthyologist John Roxborough Norman in 1925, based on syntypes collected from the Nswadzi River near the town of Cholo (now Thyolo) in the Shire Highlands of Nyasaland, present-day Malawi. The type material was deposited at the Natural History Museum in London (BMNH). FishBase records the authority as (Norman, 1925), the parenthetical indicating that the species has since been transferred out of Norman's original genus.
The genus Barbus, long used as a catch-all for African and Eurasian barbine fishes, has been progressively dismembered through phylogenetic revision. Much of the African small-barb radiation — including this species — has been referred to Enteromius, a genus that accommodates a large assemblage of sub-Saharan cyprinids previously lumped under Barbus in a broad sense. Enteromius choloensis is not known by any other scientific combinations in the current literature. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid combination.
Morphology
Enteromius choloensis reaches a maximum recorded length of 7 in standard length (SL), making it a moderately large member of the African Enteromius assemblage by regional standards — well above the typical 1.5–3 in range of many small stream barbs. As with related species, the body form is elongate and laterally compressed, suited to holding station in the running water it prefers.
Detailed morphological data for this species in the published literature are sparse. The common name "silver barb" recorded by FishBase suggests a pale, silvery coloration, consistent with the appearance of many lotic African barbs from clear, rocky-bottomed river habitats. Beyond size and gross body form, fine meristic counts and coloration details await thorough description in modern ichthyological accounts.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the lower Shire River system in southern Malawi, with specimens documented from the Nswadzi River (the type locality, at approximately 2,700 feet elevation in the Shire Highlands), and from the Ruo and Mwabvi rivers — all tributaries feeding southward into the lower Shire and ultimately the Zambezi. FishBase characterizes the species as preferring running water and rocky habitats, consistent with a life in the swift, well-oxygenated reaches of highland or foothill rivers.
The lower Shire River drains one of Africa's great rift-valley landscapes, with seasonal flow variation and substrates ranging from exposed rock and gravel to sandy margins. Water chemistry in these mixed highland catchments is not well documented for this species specifically, but savanna and highland streams across Malawi tend toward moderate hardness and near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, reflecting the geology of the region rather than the soft acidic water typical of forest blackwater.
Feeding

The Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve, within the range of this species, offers some degree of watershed protection, but the overall conservation status of the river system remains a concern for its endemic and near-endemic fishes. Targeted surveys to establish the species' current range extent and population status would be required to move beyond the Data Deficient listing.
