Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius deserti was originally described as Barbus deserti by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1909, based on specimens collected at Redir de Sfédil in the Tassili n'Ajjer (Tassili des Azdjers), Algerian Sahara. The parenthetical authority in the current combination — (Pellegrin, 1909) — marks the transfer out of his original genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the current valid name as Enteromius deserti (Pellegrin, 1909), following the transfer to Enteromius by Yang et al. (2015) and Hayes & Armbruster (2017). The species is placed in the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Smiliogastrinae.
Enteromius is a large, morphologically heterogeneous African genus that has absorbed much of what was formerly treated as the catch-all Barbus across sub-Saharan and North Africa. Many of its constituent species were long held in the broadly construed Old World Barbus before molecular and morphological work demonstrated that African and Asian barbs do not form a single natural group. The epithet deserti — from the Latin desertum, desert — alludes directly to the species' remarkable Saharan type locality. No subspecies or synonyms are currently recognised.
Morphology
Enteromius deserti is a small barb reaching up to 3.5 in total length (TL) per FishBase; the French-language literature gives a maximum of 4.5 in with typical adults well under 2.5 in. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with the typical barb profile of a slightly arched dorsal line and a subterminal, slightly inferior mouth. Two pairs of barbels are present — a rostral pair and a maxillary pair — consistent with much of the genus Enteromius.
Lateral-line scale counts of 23–26 have been recorded. Colouration is described as brownish-yellow on the dorsal surface with a diffuse darker lateral band running from the shoulder to the caudal peduncle; the fins are yellowish to faintly reddish. The overall pattern is subdued, suited to clear spring and wadi habitats against pale sandy or rocky substrates. As with most small African barbs, sexual dimorphism is modest; females are generally more robust when gravid.
Habitat
This species is specialised for the extreme conditions of southern Algerian highland water bodies. In the Tassili n'Ajjer and Ahaggar (Hoggar) mountains it occupies permanent spring-fed gueltas — rock-pool basins that hold water year-round — as well as seasonal wadis that flow after rains. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic and notes its preference for subtropical endoreic (internally draining, no outlet to the sea) systems of the southern Sahara. It tolerates both flowing and calm, shallow standing water.
The wider distribution extends to the Saharan fringe of West-Central Africa, including reaches of the Senegal and Niger river systems and the Lake Chad basin, suggesting the species can also occupy more conventional riverine habitats. Water chemistry in Saharan guelta systems varies; spring inputs can be moderately mineralised, and temperatures in shallow desert pools swing widely with season and diurnal radiation. The species appears to tolerate a broad range of conditions — brackish tolerance has also been noted — consistent with its persistence in isolated, sometimes chemically concentrated refugial waters.
Feeding
Like virtually all small African Enteromius, E. deserti is an opportunistic omnivore. In its spring-pool and wadi habitats it feeds on algae, small invertebrates, organic detritus and whatever planktonic or benthic prey the isolated water body supports. Its benthopelagic lifestyle and schooling behaviour allow it to exploit both the water column and the substrate.
In the highly productive oasis spring pools of the Saharan massifs, aufwuchs (periphyton and algal films on rock surfaces) and invertebrate benthos likely form the bulk of the diet. Barbs in this genus are generalists by nature, and E. deserti's persistence in resource-limited desert pools speaks to a flexible, efficient feeding strategy capable of utilising any available organic input.
Mating
Enteromius deserti, in common with all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no territory is maintained beyond brief courtship activity, and neither parent assumes any responsibility for the eggs once released. Spawning is triggered by environmental cues — likely temperature, photoperiod and water-level changes following rainfall — and involves a ripe male closely pursuing a gravid female over the substrate or among available vegetation.
The two fish press together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The fertilised eggs are adhesive and fall among gravel, sand, rock crevices or any fine-leaved plant growth present. Adults show no further interest in the eggs and may consume them if encountered. In the confined spring pools of the Tassili, the absence of dense riparian vegetation likely means eggs are deposited directly over sandy or rocky substrates.
Breeding
In its native Saharan refuges, breeding is presumed to follow seasonal rainfall that replenishes the wadi system or raises and freshens guelta pools, providing the hydrological trigger common to many seasonally arid-zone fishes. The species has been recorded schooling in sometimes large aggregations, consistent with the social spawning behaviour typical of Enteromius in which multiple individuals may participate in a single spawning event.
Specific breeding data for E. deserti in captivity appear sparse in the available literature. Given its close affinity to other small African Enteromius, standard egg-scatterer husbandry — a separate spawning vessel, a substrate of fine gravel or pebbles, and separation of adults post-spawn to prevent egg predation — would be the appropriate approach. Eggs are expected to hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical to subtropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later.
In the aquarium
Enteromius deserti is essentially unknown in the international ornamental trade. It is a specialised Saharan endemic with very limited collection infrastructure, and it does not appear in mainstream hobby catalogues or commercial availability lists. Its ecological significance lies almost entirely in its role as a desert refugial species rather than as an aquarium fish.
In principle, as a schooling omnivore from warm, shallow, moderately mineralised water bodies, it would be maintained similarly to other small African barbs — in a species or lightly stocked community tank with adequate open swimming space, good filtration, and a varied diet. Its tolerance of a wide range of water chemistries (noted from both brackish and freshwater records) may make it more forgiving of captive water parameters than many narrowly specialised species. However, any collection from wild Saharan populations would require careful consideration of the species' highly restricted and vulnerable desert habitat.
Conservation
Enteromius deserti has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This gap in formal assessment is significant: the species is restricted to some of the most fragile and isolated freshwater refuges on earth. The permanent spring-fed gueltas of the Tassili n'Ajjer and Ahaggar massifs are small, geographically fixed water bodies with no hydrological connection to major drainage systems; any local extinction event is irreversible on human timescales.
The pressures on Saharan guelta fauna include groundwater extraction for agriculture and human settlement, climate-change-driven reductions in already minimal rainfall, and the degradation of spring catchments by livestock grazing and trampling. The Lake Chad basin, which also forms part of this species' wider range, has suffered severe hydrological contraction over recent decades. Given the combination of extreme habitat specificity, small effective population sizes in isolated desert pools, and growing human pressure on Saharan water resources, E. deserti would likely qualify for a threatened category under formal IUCN assessment.
