Enteromius devosi is a small cyprinid barb endemic to the Malagarazi River drainage in Burundi and Tanzania, one of the few freshwater systems that drains eastward into Lake Tanganyika. Described in 2012 and originally placed in the informal grouping 'Barbus', it is a slender, mid-sized African barb reaching nearly 3 in standard length, distinguished by a conspicuous black mid-lateral stripe and two pairs of barbels. It inhabits slow-running, clear-water streams with sandy and gravelled bottoms and grassy banks on the margins of the Malagarazi system, rarely venturing into the main river channel. Named in honour of the late Belgian ichthyologist Luc De Vos, the species remains poorly known outside its type basin and has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius devosi was described by Banyankimbona, Vreven and Snoeks in 2012 from the Malagarazi River basin, originally published under the informal 'Barbus' grouping that served as a holding name for many African cyprinids before modern revisions sorted them into smaller, more natural genera. Following the broad reorganisation of African small barbs, the species was referred to Enteromius, the genus now recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) as the valid container for this assemblage of sub-Saharan species.

The genus Enteromius is large and heterogeneous, encompassing hundreds of small to medium-sized African barbs spread across nearly every drainage system of sub-Saharan Africa. E. devosi sits within the eastern African portion of this range, in the drainage basin that flows into Lake Tanganyika. The species is monotypic with no described subspecies, and the original description is the primary systematic source for its morphological diagnosis.

Morphology

Enteromius devosi reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in, placing it at the larger end of the small-barb spectrum within its drainage. It is a moderately slender fish with the typical cyprinid body plan: a fusiform shape, a single dorsal fin, a forked caudal fin and the characteristic cycloid scales of the family.

The fin formula includes 3 dorsal spines and 6–8 dorsal soft rays, with 0 anal spines and 7–9 anal soft rays. The last unbranched dorsal ray is serrated, a feature common among Enteromius and related genera. The lateral line is complete, running the length of the body with 24–27 lateral-line scales. Its most striking marking is a permanent, solid black mid-lateral stripe that runs from behind the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin. The species possesses two pairs of barbels — rostral and maxillary — which are standard within Enteromius.

Habitat

Enteromius devosi is known from the Malagarazi River drainage, a basin that originates in Burundi and crosses into Tanzania before discharging into the northern end of Lake Tanganyika. The Malagarazi is one of Tanganyika's principal tributary systems and supports a fish fauna of at least 74 native species, including 14 endemics, with Cyprinidae being the most species-rich family in the basin.

Within this system, E. devosi occupies slow-running tributary streams characterised by clear water, sandy or gravelled substrates, and grassy, vegetated banks. FishBase records it as a freshwater pelagic species (in the sense of inhabiting the water column rather than strictly the bottom), but field notes indicate it rarely uses the main channel of the Malagarazi proper, preferring smaller tributary streams on the margins. The water chemistry of the Malagarazi basin is influenced by proximity to the alkaline Lake Tanganyika system, tending toward harder, more mineral-rich conditions than the soft, acidic waters typical of Congo-basin drainages to the west.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study specific to Enteromius devosi has been published. Based on the morphology and ecology of closely related Enteromius species in comparable African stream habitats, it is expected to be a generalised omnivore: consuming small invertebrates (insect larvae, crustaceans, worms), periphyton, algae, and organic detritus gleaned from sandy and gravelled substrates and from the vegetation along stream margins.

The two pairs of barbels are consistent with a benthic foraging component, feeling across the substrate for small food items. In slow-running, clear streams with grassy banks, seasonal invertebrate drift and terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface are also likely dietary inputs. Data on feeding are sparse, and further field studies would be needed to characterise the species' trophic position precisely.

Mating

Like all members of the family Cyprinidae, Enteromius devosi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the spawning act, and no parental care of any kind. A receptive male drives a gravid female through marginal vegetation or over the sandy and gravelled substrate, the two fish pressing close together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously into the water.

The adhesive eggs settle among plant roots, on gravel, or in fine benthic detritus, where they develop without any attention from the adults. Seasonal flooding and temperature variation in the Malagarazi drainage likely drive spawning periodicity, as is common in African stream cyprinids, with peak reproductive activity tied to the rains. No aquarium-based courtship observations have been published for this species.

Breeding

Enteromius devosi has not been bred in aquaria under controlled conditions in any documented study. Based on the biology of comparable Enteromius species, breeding would involve scattering small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, fibrous plant roots, or over a gravel substrate — the standard cyprinid pattern for species in this genus.

In a dedicated spawning setup for comparable small African barbs, a shallow tank with soft substrate or a spawning mop, slightly elevated temperature, and a group or conditioned pair is the typical starting point. Adults in Enteromius generally show no parental instinct and will consume their own eggs if given access to them; separating the adults from the eggs immediately after spawning is standard practice. Larvae would be expected to become free-swimming within a few days of hatching, initially taking microscopic live foods. Data on clutch size and fecundity for E. devosi are not available in the published literature.

In the aquarium

Enteromius devosi is not an established aquarium fish and does not appear in the hobby trade to any significant degree. As a range-restricted endemic from the Malagarazi drainage, it is unlikely to be available through commercial channels, and no care guidelines specific to the species have been published.

For any aquarist keeping the species through specialist channels or field collection, the habitat profile suggests a tank with clear, well-oxygenated, moderately hard water reflecting the Malagarazi's Tanganyika-influenced chemistry, a fine sandy or gravelled substrate, and some marginal planting. As a small schooling barb, it would be best maintained in groups, following the general guidance for small Enteromius. Temperatures across the Malagarazi region are broadly tropical. Feeding presents no special challenges, as African stream barbs of this type are generalist omnivores readily accepting prepared and frozen foods.

Conservation

Enteromius devosi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). As an endemic restricted to the Malagarazi River basin — a single drainage system shared between Burundi and Tanzania — its range is inherently limited, making it potentially vulnerable to localised pressures even if not formally evaluated.

The Malagarazi basin faces pressures common to many East African river systems: agricultural expansion and associated sedimentation, water extraction for irrigation, and some pollution in areas near human settlement. The basin's fish community of 74 native species, including 14 endemics, represents a concentrated biodiversity asset whose health is linked to the catchment's land use. Given E. devosi's restricted distribution and preference for clear-water tributary streams — habitat types sensitive to catchment degradation — a formal IUCN assessment would be a useful step toward understanding its conservation status.
