Enteromius ditinensis was first described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Daget in 1962 under the original combination Barbus ditinensis, named for the Diting River, a tributary of the upper Senegal system in Guinea. The parenthetical authority in the current name — (Daget, 1962) — reflects the transfer out of Barbus into the genus Enteromius, which now accommodates the great majority of sub-Saharan African small barbs following the revision and fragmentation of the old, polyphyletic genus Barbus.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Enteromius ditinensis. No subspecies are recognised. The species has no widely used common name in the hobby or in the regional literature. Its placement in Enteromius aligns it with a species-rich African radiation rather than with the Asian Puntius lineage, and no reclassification back to Barbus is current.
Morphology
Specific morphometric data for Enteromius ditinensis in the published literature is sparse, as the species has received little detailed treatment outside its original description. Like most small Enteromius of West Africa, it is presumed to be a moderately slender, small-bodied cyprinid with the typical barb complement of a single dorsal fin, no fin spines, and a pair of maxillary barbels.
The original description by Daget characterises it as a distinct species within the upper Senegal fauna, though detailed meristic counts and colour pattern notes are not widely reproduced in accessible secondary sources. Where size data are absent from confirmed records, the species is best left as data sparse rather than assigned speculative dimensions.
Habitat
Enteromius ditinensis is recorded from the upper basin of the Senegal River in Guinea, with the type locality in the Diting River drainage of the Fouta Djallon highlands. This region is characterised by hilly to mountainous terrain, with streams and rivers draining upland savanna and gallery forest environments before descending toward the broader Senegal lowlands.
The Fouta Djallon highlands are the headwater source for several major West African rivers, producing a range of stream types from cool, fast-flowing rocky torrents to slower, seasonally variable channels. Water chemistry in the region tends toward soft and slightly acidic in forest headwaters, becoming more variable in savanna-influenced reaches. The species is presumed benthopelagic and associated with lotic habitats within its small endemic range.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Enteromius ditinensis is available in accessible literature. By analogy with other small West African Enteromius occupying comparable stream habitats in the upper Senegal basin, the species is most likely an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and micro-crustaceans — alongside algae, diatoms and plant-derived detritus.
Small barbs in highland savanna and gallery-forest streams typically forage along the substrate and in the water column, picking at biofilm, aufwuchs and invertebrate drift. Any aquarium feeding regimen suitable for small omnivorous African barbs — quality flake or small pellets supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates — would be expected to meet the species' nutritional requirements.
Mating
Enteromius ditinensis, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific account of spawning behaviour in the wild or in captivity has been published for the species, but the reproductive mode is consistent across the barb clade: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief contact.
There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no territorial defence beyond transient male rivalry during courtship. In the highland streams of the Fouta Djallon, spawning is likely seasonal, tied to rainfall and temperature cues that characterise the West African wet season, though this has not been documented for the species specifically.
Breeding
No captive-breeding record for Enteromius ditinensis is known in the aquarium literature, and the species does not appear to be in hobby circulation. General barb breeding technique — a separate spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a protective substrate layer to shield eggs from adult predation — would serve as a starting framework if the species were obtained.
As in all barbs, there is no parental care: adults scatter adhesive eggs and will eat them and the fry if not removed. Eggs would be expected to hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae requiring small live foods such as infusoria and nauplii in early development.
In the aquarium
Enteromius ditinensis is not an established aquarium species and is not available through normal hobby channels. The species is a narrow-range endemic from a restricted portion of the upper Senegal River in Guinea, and there is no record of it being imported or bred in captivity for the trade.
Should the species ever become available, care would likely mirror that of other small West African Enteromius: a modest aquarium with soft to moderately hard water, a broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH, a temperature range reflecting the subtropical highland climate of its native drainage, and a diet of small invertebrates and prepared foods. It would be expected to do best in a peaceful community with other small, non-aggressive fishes.
Conservation

The assessment reflects the species' currently known status within its upper Senegal River range in Guinea, with no evidence of severe range-wide decline sufficient to meet threatened thresholds.
The upper Senegal basin and the Fouta Djallon highlands face pressures common to West African freshwater systems: small-scale mining, agricultural water extraction, deforestation of riparian gallery forest, and seasonal water stress amplified by regional climate trends. As a restricted-range endemic with a relatively small known area of occupancy, the species warrants continued monitoring, even under an LC designation, since data on population trends remain sparse.
