Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius guildi was described by Paul V. Loiselle in 1973 from the headwaters of the Hedjo River at Gbota, Volta Region, Ghana, approximately 12 mi north-east of Ho. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the type locality as the upper Hedjo in the Volta basin. Loiselle placed the species in the old genus Barbus, under which it long appeared in the literature as Barbus guildi (Loiselle, 1973); the parenthetical authority reflects that the species has since been moved from Barbus to the valid current genus.
Phylogenetic and taxonomic revision of the African small barbs has reassigned a large number of sub-Saharan Barbus to the resurrected genus Enteromius — a reclassification recognised in the Catalog of Fishes and supported by morphological and molecular work including studies on the taxonomy and relationships of African small barbs (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae, subfamily Smiliogastrinae). The combination Enteromius guildi is now the valid name; Barbus guildi remains the original description combination and appears in older references.
The species epithet honours Paul Douglas Guild, a United States Peace Corps volunteer who assisted Loiselle in the field during the ichthyological survey that yielded the type specimens.
Morphology
Enteromius guildi is a small, slender cyprinid with a maximum recorded size of 2 in standard length (2 in SL) for male or unsexed specimens, per FishBase. Like most small Enteromius, it has two pairs of short barbels around the mouth — a rostral pair and a maxillary pair — which are characteristic of the genus and help distinguish it from barbel-free African cyprinid relatives.
The body is marked by a narrow, dark lateral band running along the flank. Detailed meristic and pigmentation data beyond this are sparse in the accessible literature; the original 1973 description by Loiselle in the primary literature remains the principal morphological account. No fixed aquarium colour forms are known, and the fish is not commercially cultivated.
Habitat
The species is known only from the upper reaches of the Hedjo River at Gbota in Ghana's Volta Region, a headwater tributary of the broader Volta basin on the Togo–Ghana border. FishBase records it as a benthopelagic freshwater fish of tropical West African headwater streams. The Hedjo headwaters are highland-influenced seasonal streams typical of the southern Volta basin fringe, distinct from the larger, lower-altitude channels of the main Volta system.
Detailed water-chemistry data specifically for the Hedjo headwater at the type locality are sparse in the accessible literature. Hydrochemical studies of the lower Volta in Ghana document seasonally variable physicochemical parameters — generally mineral-richer water in the dry season — but these lower-river conditions do not directly characterise the small headwater streams where E. guildi lives. The habitat is best understood as a warm tropical headwater stream with seasonal flow variation, broadly consistent with savanna-influenced upper-Volta drainage.
Feeding
No specific dietary study for Enteromius guildi has been published in accessible sources. As a small omnivorous African barb in a headwater stream environment, it almost certainly exploits a range of small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and worms — together with algae and organic detritus, in the manner typical of small Enteromius across sub-Saharan Africa.
Given its very small size (under 2.5 in SL) and benthopelagic habit, the species likely forages both in the water column and along the substrate, picking at biofilm, fallen invertebrates, and particulate organic matter. Data on its feeding ecology are absent from the literature surveyed; any detailed account awaits field study at the type locality.
Mating
Enteromius guildi, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific spawning observations have been published for this species, but the reproductive mode is uniform across the family: a driving male pursues a gravid female through the substrate or over vegetation, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, repeated bursts without any nest construction, territory holding, or pair bond beyond the act of spawning.
Spawning in small West African headwater barbs is typically seasonal, tied to rains and rising water levels that signal improved food availability and suitable shallow-water spawning habitat. The adhesive eggs sink to the substrate among gravel, roots, or fine-leaved vegetation, and neither parent has any further involvement once milt is shed.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Enteromius guildi are available in the hobby or scientific literature — the species has no known commercial aquarium presence and is not propagated in the trade. Its biology follows the barb template: eggs are scattered and adhesive, and parental care is absent; adults actively eat eggs and any larvae they encounter.
In the wild, breeding is expected to be seasonal, linked to the onset of rains in the Volta Region and the rise of small headwater streams. Fry would depend on microscopic invertebrates and fine particulate matter in the early weeks. No fecundity, egg size, or developmental data are available from the published record.
In the aquarium
Enteromius guildi has no established place in the aquarium hobby. It carries no vernacular common name, has no commercial value per FishBase, and is not exported from Ghana for the trade. The species' extreme endemism — known only from a few kilometres of headwater stream near Gbota — makes wild collection both logistically difficult and conservation-sensitive.
Should specimens ever become available, the basic requirements of a small West African headwater barb would apply: a modestly sized aquarium with warm water (tropical, roughly 75–81 °F), adequate oxygenation and filtration, and a diet of small invertebrates and quality prepared foods. Its small adult size and likely shoaling behaviour are traits shared with other diminutive Enteromius, but all such care guidance is inferential given the complete absence of hobby records.
Conservation
Enteromius guildi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded in 2020. The evaluation reflects that, despite the species' extremely restricted range — confined to the upper Hedjo River near Gbota, Volta Region, Ghana — the headwater habitat does not appear to be under acute threat at the time of assessment, and no evidence of major population decline was recorded.
Nonetheless, the species' known range of only a handful of kilometres of stream makes it inherently vulnerable. Threats typical of West African headwater systems — small-scale damming, water extraction for agriculture, deforestation of riparian zones, and siltation from land clearance — could affect the Hedjo headwaters. The distribution is so narrow that a single localised disturbance could affect the entire known population. Continued monitoring of the type-locality habitat is warranted given this restricted endemism.
