Enteromius litamba is a large predatory barb endemic to the Lake Malawi basin, inhabiting both the lake's inshore open waters and the rivers and seasonal streams that feed it. It grows to at least 14 in standard length — making it one of the more substantial barbs in east-central Africa — and hunts in shoals, preying on smaller fishes and invertebrates in the benthopelagic zone. Originally described by Keilhack in 1908, the species was long traded under the synonym Barbus rhoadesii before Banister and Clarke established the valid combination in 1980. It is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, largely because its open-water, migratory habits make population data difficult to gather.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius litamba was described by Keilhack in 1908. It belongs to the sprawling African barb assemblage placed in the genus Enteromius — a genus revived and redefined to hold the majority of small to large African barbs formerly lumped in the old catch-all Barbus. The species was long referred to under the name Barbus rhoadesii, a synonym treated as valid in much of the older literature; Banister and Clarke (1980) established that litamba was the correct name under the rules of zoological nomenclature, and the Catalog of Fishes recognises Enteromius litamba (Keilhack, 1908) as the valid combination.

The parenthetical authority reflects the species' original placement in a genus other than Enteromius. Within the Lake Malawi basin, E. litamba shares its range with a diverse endemic cichlid fauna but is one of a much smaller number of indigenous cyprinids present in the system.

Morphology

Enteromius litamba is a large-bodied barb, with FishBase recording a maximum of 14 in standard length. Some sources suggest individuals may reach 17.5 in total length, though fish of that size are exceptional; most encountered in inshore waters are considerably smaller. The body is elongate and moderately compressed, consistent with an active, open-water shoaling lifestyle.

Distinguishing external features include a noticeably large, upturned mouth and a concave head profile, both adaptations associated with surface and mid-water predation on smaller prey. The dorsal fin spine is serrated. In life the species has the silvery flanks typical of open-water schooling fishes. Detailed meristic data in the accessible literature are sparse.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Lake Malawi system, recorded from the lake itself and from the river mouths and streams that drain into it — with range touching Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania along the lake's coastline. Within the lake it occupies inshore areas and open waters in a benthopelagic fashion, forming shoals in the water column rather than staying close to structured bottom habitat. Juveniles are reported to prefer sandy substrates in inshore shallows.

Lake Malawi is a large, deep tropical rift lake with stable thermal conditions, its surface layers remaining broadly in the 73–82 °F range year-round. The lake is notably alkaline and moderately hard relative to western African crater or forest-stream habitats, with carbonate buffering from the rift geology. The species is characterised as potamodromous — making regular migrations between the lake and tributary rivers and streams, likely for spawning.

Feeding

Enteromius litamba is a predatory barb. FishBase records a diet of small fishes and invertebrates, and the species' large upturned mouth and shoaling behaviour in open water are both consistent with active pursuit predation rather than bottom-grazing. It is recorded as benthopelagic, hunting through the water column in the inshore and open-water zones of the lake.

Beyond this broad characterisation, published diet data for this species in the accessible literature are limited. Given its size and the trophic structure of Lake Malawi, it likely takes cichlid fry and juvenile fishes alongside crustaceans and larger invertebrates, much as other large predatory barbs in African rift systems do.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius litamba is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. The species is recorded as a full migrant — undertaking seasonal movements from the lake into tributary rivers and temporary streams to spawn — a pattern seen in other large potamodromous barbs across sub-Saharan Africa. During these migrations, ripe fish move upstream and scatter eggs over suitable substrate, releasing eggs and milt without forming lasting pair bonds or defending territories.

There is no parental care at any stage. Once spawning is complete, adults return to lake feeding grounds, leaving eggs and subsequent larvae to develop without supervision. The timing of spawning runs is likely tied to seasonal rainfall and river flow.

Breeding

Enteromius litamba has not been reported as bred in captivity in the accessible hobby literature, which is unsurprising given its size — reaching 14 in or more — and its reliance on seasonal river migrations to trigger reproduction. In the wild, spawning occurs in rivers and temporary streams draining into Lake Malawi, consistent with the potamodromous migratory pattern documented for the species.

Eggs are scattered over substrate — likely gravel or rocky stream beds — and receive no parental care. Larvae and juveniles are on their own from hatching, with no guarding, no nest, and no mouthbrooding. The species is captured in commercial fisheries within the lake, and juveniles are occasionally collected for the aquarium trade, but deliberate captive breeding has not been documented.

In the aquarium

Enteromius litamba is occasionally available through the specialist trade but is rarely kept as an aquarium fish in any meaningful sense. Its large potential size — at least 14 in and possibly larger — places it well beyond what most hobbyist systems can accommodate. The species is an active open-water shoaler, requiring considerable horizontal swimming space, and is predatory on smaller fishes.

For the rare keeper with a very large system, water conditions should reflect its rift-lake origin: tropical temperatures in the 73–82 °F range, alkaline pH (7.5–8.5), and moderate to hard carbonate-buffered water. It should be kept with robust tankmates of similar size, as it will consume anything small enough to fit in its large upturned mouth. It is much more significant as a food fish in the Lake Malawi region than as an aquarium subject.

Conservation

Enteromius litamba is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated May 2018. The Data Deficient designation reflects insufficient population data rather than a conclusion that the species is not threatened; the combination of open-water, migratory habits and a broad endemic range across the Lake Malawi basin makes robust survey data difficult to obtain.

The IUCN assessment notes no major widespread threats, though some sources flag potential pressure from overfishing — the species is taken in commercial subsistence fisheries in the lake. Lake Malawi's endemic fauna faces ongoing pressures from intensive artisanal fisheries, sedimentation from catchment deforestation, and climate-driven shifts in lake temperature and stratification. Whether E. litamba is vulnerable to these pressures at a population level is unknown given the data gap.
