Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius luikae was described by Ricardo in 1939, with the original combination Barbus luikae; the species name honours the Luika River, a tributary system feeding Lake Rukwa in western Tanzania. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) recognises the current valid combination as Enteromius luikae (Ricardo, 1939), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the move out of the original genus. The FishBase species record assigns it ID 11392.
The genus Enteromius encompasses a large and taxonomically complex group of small to medium-sized African barbs long grouped under the expansive catch-all Barbus. Molecular and morphological work through the 2000s and 2010s progressively dismantled the old Barbus sensu lato, and most sub-Saharan African small barbs now sit in Enteromius — though the boundaries and content of the genus continue to be refined as comparative studies of African cyprinids expand. Enteromius luikae has not attracted significant taxonomic revision since its original description, and its position within the genus remains as placed.
Morphology
Enteromius luikae is a small, slender barb reaching a maximum recorded length of 2 in total length (male or unsexed), placing it among the smaller members of its genus. The general form follows the pattern typical of small African Enteromius: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body with a relatively small head, a terminal to slightly subterminal mouth, and the paired barbels characteristic of the barb lineage.
Detailed colour and scale counts for this species are sparse in the available literature. Like most riverine Enteromius, it is presumed to show the benthopelagic habits and schooling tendency common to small barbs in its size class. Sexual dimorphism, if present, likely follows the pattern seen across the genus, with gravid females becoming noticeably rounder than males, though this has not been formally documented for E. luikae specifically.
Habitat
The Luika barb inhabits rivers and streams draining into Lake Rukwa, a shallow, alkaline, closed-basin rift lake in western Tanzania at approximately 2625–2953 ft elevation. The Lake Rukwa drainage is biogeographically isolated — water does not exit to any ocean catchment — and this isolation has driven a high degree of endemism among its fish fauna, with roughly one-third of the approximately 60 known fish species being endemic to the basin. Cyprinidae, including barbs of the genus Enteromius, are the dominant family.
The species is also recorded from Burundi, suggesting it is present in more than one drainage system or that its range encompasses border-zone river headwaters shared between Tanzania and Burundi. Its natural habitats are described as rivers and intermittent freshwater lakes, consistent with the seasonal and semi-permanent watercourses characteristic of the East African savanna and rift-valley margins. Feeding
No detailed dietary studies of Enteromius luikae appear in the available literature. Small riverine Enteromius are generally opportunistic omnivores that feed on fine organic matter, small invertebrates such as insect larvae, chironomid midges and small crustaceans, algal films and biofilm scraped from surfaces, and detritus picked from the substrate. Mating
Enteromius luikae, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed, no territory is held beyond the transient proximity of spawning, and no pair bond forms. A ripe male pursues a gravid female through vegetation, over gravel or across sandy substrate, pressing against her flanks as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive eggs fall among plants, into gravel interstices or onto the bottom.
Spawning in East African savanna barbs is typically triggered by the onset of the rains, when rising water temperature, increased flow and the influx of food cue fish into reproductive condition. Several males may court a single female, and successful spawning often involves brief, repeated contact runs in shallow, well-vegetated marginal water. Breeding
After spawning, Enteromius luikae adults provide no parental care. Eggs are left where they fall — among plant stems, in crevices, or on the substrate — and the adults disperse or may return to eat loose eggs. Egg incubation time and larval development details have not been published for this species; they are likely comparable to other small tropical Enteromius, where eggs hatch within one to two days at warm temperatures and larvae become free-swimming a few days later once the yolk sac is absorbed.

Any hobbyist working with this species — if specimens could be sourced — would do well to replicate the seasonal temperature and flow fluctuations of its native drainage, offer a mixed diet of small live and frozen invertebrates alongside dried foods, and maintain it in a shoal. FishBase notes low vulnerability to fishing pressure and high resilience, suggesting the species would prove hardy under reasonable aquarium conditions, though no dedicated husbandry literature exists.
Conservation

The Lake Rukwa basin, the core of its known range, has experienced pressure from subsistence fishing, agricultural water extraction, and periodic dramatic natural fluctuations in lake level — Lake Rukwa has shrunk and expanded several times over the past century and nearly desiccated in the 1950s. The high endemism of the basin's fish fauna means that species tied exclusively to it are inherently vulnerable to basin-wide events, even when currently classified as Least Concern.
