Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius magdalenae was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1906, originally under the genus Barbus — the old catch-all designation used for most African barbs of that era. The species was long carried as Barbus magdalenae and appears under that combination in much of the older African ichthyological literature. The current valid genus, Enteromius, was established for a large group of African small barbs and now governs the species' placement per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names.
The parenthetical authority (Boulenger, 1906) signals that the species was described in a genus — Barbus — from which it has since been moved. Enteromius is a diverse assemblage spanning much of sub-Saharan Africa, and magdalenae sits within the Lake Victoria radiation of small barbs, a group that parallels the famous cichlid radiations of the same lake in its degree of endemism and ecological diversification.
Morphology
The Bunjako barb is a small fish, reaching a maximum of 2.5 in standard length (SL). Like most members of Enteromius, it has the moderately deep, laterally compressed body plan characteristic of the African small-barb lineage, with a subterminal or inferior mouth suited to picking food from surfaces and the substrate.
Detailed colour descriptions for wild specimens are sparse in the available literature. As with many small African barbs, the species is likely silvery to olive-gold along the flanks, paling ventrally, with fins that may carry a yellowish or reddish wash in breeding condition. Data on secondary sexual characteristics are limited; females of comparable species are typically larger-bodied and fuller when gravid.
Habitat
Enteromius magdalenae is endemic to the Lake Victoria basin in East Africa, with records from Lakes Victoria and Nabugabo — a small satellite lake separated from Victoria on the western shore in Uganda. Within these water bodies the species occupies marginal habitats: water-lily swamps, shallow waters, and sandy banks along the lake margins rather than open pelagic zones.
It is classified as benthopelagic — associated with the bottom and lower water column in the shallows. A notable ecological behaviour is an apparent seasonal migration: biannual floods trigger upstream movement into the lakeside streams draining into the lake, a pattern consistent with spawning runs documented in other Victoria-basin cyprinids. Water temperatures across this equatorial system run broadly from 72–82 °F.
Feeding
As a small barb of shallow, vegetated littoral habitats, Enteromius magdalenae is presumed to be an omnivore in the manner of related species, foraging on small invertebrates, algae, plant fragments and organic detritus associated with the water-lily beds and sandy substrates it inhabits. Detailed dietary studies for this species are not available in the literature.
The benthopelagic lifestyle and the structure of the marginal swamp habitat suggest a diet dominated by surface-associated and bottom-picked items — chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, algal films and detrital material — consistent with the feeding ecology of comparable small-bodied Victoria-basin cyprinids.
Mating
Like all barbs, Enteromius magdalenae is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no pair bond beyond the spawning act itself, and no parental care of any kind. In closely related small barbs, courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, with eggs and milt released in brief, close contact.
The biannual upstream migration into lakeside streams described for this species is consistent with a seasonally triggered broadcast spawning strategy, in which rising water levels and increased flow act as environmental cues for adults to move into shallower, faster-moving water — a common pattern among small African cyprinids that use seasonally flooded streams as spawning and nursery habitat.
Breeding
In the wild, breeding appears to be linked to the seasonal flood pulses that drive adult fish into tributary streams of the Lake Victoria basin. Beyond this migratory pattern, detailed reproductive data — fecundity, egg size, incubation time — are not documented in the available literature for this species. FishBase notes a population doubling time of fewer than 15 months and low fishing vulnerability, figures consistent with relatively high reproductive output typical of small, short-lived barbs.
No aquarium breeding accounts are recorded for the Bunjako barb in hobbyist sources. On biological grounds, the approach for small African Enteromius would follow the standard barb protocol: a separate spawning vessel with fine-leaved plants or a mesh false bottom, warm water, and removal of adults after spawning to protect the adhesive eggs — but this remains untested in captivity for this species specifically.
In the aquarium
Enteromius magdalenae has no established presence in the ornamental trade, and no hobbyist husbandry accounts are recorded in accessible sources. It is not a species likely to be encountered in mainstream aquarium retail. Any specimens would be wild-caught from Uganda and would require conditions reflecting the warm, shallow, vegetated margins of Lake Victoria: temperatures of 72–82 °F, neutral to slightly alkaline pH in line with the Victoria basin's relatively hard, buffered water, and substantial open swimming space combined with planted areas.
As a small, active shoaling barb it would require a group of at least six individuals to display natural behaviour and minimise stress. Its primarily wild-caught status and limited trade presence make it a fish of scientific rather than mainstream hobbyist interest.
Conservation
Enteromius magdalenae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded in 2015 via FishBase. Despite the severe ecological disruption that has affected the Lake Victoria basin — including the Nile perch introduction, widespread eutrophication, and overfishing — this species apparently maintains a population sufficient to avoid threatened categories at present.
However, the Lake Victoria basin remains one of the most pressured freshwater systems in Africa. Lake Nabugabo, one of the two known localities for this species, is a small satellite lake historically important for endemic fish; it faces threats from agricultural runoff, wetland encroachment, and water-level fluctuation. The marginal swamp habitats that Enteromius magdalenae depends on are particularly vulnerable to shoreline degradation, and continued monitoring of small endemic cyprinids in this basin is warranted given the pace of land-use change around East Africa's Great Lakes.
