Enteromius niggie is a small African barb described in 2024 by Scheepers, Bragança and Chakona, making it among the most recently recognised members of the large and taxonomically active genus Enteromius. As a 2024 species the scientific literature in the public domain remains sparse, and no common name had entered circulation at the time of writing. Its assignment to Enteromius places it firmly within the diverse radiation of small-bodied cyprinid barbs that ranges across sub-Saharan Africa, a group whose members typically inhabit rivers, streams and seasonal floodplains and share the egg-scattering reproductive strategy characteristic of barbs worldwide.

Enteromius niggie was formally described in 2024 by Scheepers, Bragança and Chakona. The Catalogue of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the authority for valid names, records the species under the genus Enteromius in the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Cyprininae.

Enteromius is the accepted name for a large assemblage of small to medium African barbs that were historically placed in the catch-all genus Barbus and later Puntius. The current generic arrangement, consolidated through molecular and morphological revisions of the 2000s and 2010s, separates the African lineages from the Asian ones: the name Puntius is now restricted to a small group of South Asian species, while Enteromius accommodates the bulk of the sub-Saharan small barbs. Because E. niggie was described in 2024, no revisionary synonymy or previous combination is on record.

The species epithet niggie has not yet been publicly glossed in accessible literature; its derivation will be detailed in the original description.

Morphology

Detailed morphometric and meristic data for Enteromius niggie are confined to the 2024 original description, which is not yet widely available in the public domain. For aquarists who encounter it in the future, the general husbandry principles for small Enteromius would apply: a well-filtered aquarium with some current, open swimming space, cover of plants or rocks, and water conditions matched to the type locality once that information is published. Small African barbs are typically active shoaling fishes that do best in groups, are undemanding feeders, and coexist well with fishes of similar temperament.

Many small, range-restricted African barbs face pressures including water extraction, agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and introduced species in their native river systems.
