Enteromius nzigidaherai is a small, newly described African barb known only from two headwater tributaries of the upper Malagarazi River in Burundi — the Muyovozi and the Kinwa — where it lives in soft, acidic highland streams draining the Albertine Rift. Described formally in 2024 and assessed immediately as Critically Endangered, this species occupies one of the most restricted ranges of any Enteromius, and there are credible reports that it has already disappeared from at least one of its two known tributaries. Its discovery underscores how little is still known of the freshwater fish fauna of Burundi's forested highlands.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius nzigidaherai was described in 2024 by a team of Burundian and Belgian ichthyologists — Bigirimana, Kisekelwa, Costa, Huyghe, Banyankimbona and Vreven — based on specimens collected from the Muyovozi and Kinwa rivers, both affluents of the upper Malagarazi basin in Burundi. The description was published in the Journal of Fish Biology.

The species belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Enteromius, which encompasses a wide range of sub-Saharan African barbs formerly lumped under the broader genus Barbus. Molecular analysis using DNA barcoding showed greater than ten per cent genetic distance between E. nzigidaherai and its closest relatives, firmly supporting recognition as a distinct species. It is morphologically distinguishable from two sympatric congeners, E. quadrilineatus and E. lineomaculatus, by a combination of characters including a horizontal series of black spots at mid-lateral level and a last unbranched dorsal ray that is flexible and lacks serrations.

The epithet nzigidaherai honours a local name or person connected to the type locality area; the specific etymology was recorded in the original description.

Morphology

Enteromius nzigidaherai is a small cyprinid barb of modest proportions, consistent with the general Enteromius body plan: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body, a subterminal mouth, and the typical four-rayed unbranched dorsal fin characteristic of the group. The diagnostic character that sets it apart from sympatric congeners is the last unbranched dorsal ray, which in this species is flexible and smooth — without the posterior serrations seen in related taxa.

The colour pattern features a horizontal series of black spots running along the mid-lateral line, giving the fish a punctuated rather than banded or plain appearance. The overall colouration is subdued, as is common in the small stream-dwelling barbs of the Albertine Rift highlands. Precise meristic and morphometric data are recorded in the original species description in the Journal of Fish Biology; size data are not yet available through secondary aggregators.

Habitat

The species is known exclusively from the Muyovozi and Kinwa rivers, both small highland tributaries of the upper Malagarazi basin in the western highlands of Burundi. The Malagarazi is the principal river draining into Lake Tanganyika from the east, and its uppermost reaches sit at considerable altitude — the headwaters of the broader system begin above 2,1640 ft, with the species' tributaries at intermediate elevations in the Albertine Rift foothill zone.

Water chemistry data from the upper Malagarazi basin indicates soft, acidic conditions typical of forested highland streams in this part of Africa: pH around 5.5 to 6.5 and conductivity below 100 µS/cm. Substrate in the type locality streams includes mud, sand, gravel and stones. Riparian vegetation — Cyperus papyrus, gallery forest — shades sections of these streams, and the fish likely inhabits slow to moderately flowing reaches with soft bottom substrate.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Enteromius nzigidaherai has been published. By analogy with other small Enteromius from forested highland streams of the Albertine Rift, the species is likely an opportunistic omnivore feeding on small invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans, and worms — along with algae, biofilm and organic detritus picked from the substrate.

The soft, slightly acidic, forested stream habitat of its native tributaries suggests a food base largely driven by allochthonous inputs — leaf litter, terrestrial invertebrates falling into the water — combined with the periphyton and invertebrate fauna of the stream bed.

Mating

No spawning behaviour has been observed or described for Enteromius nzigidaherai in the literature. As an Enteromius barb, it is expected to follow the standard cyprinid egg-scattering strategy shared across the genus. Courtship in African barbs of this type involves a male pursuing and driving a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, culminating in a brief lateral press during which eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

No nest is built, no territory is held beyond the act of spawning, and there is no pair bond. Adults take no interest in eggs or larvae after spawning, and freely consume eggs if they encounter them. Given the species' extremely restricted range and critically endangered status, there has been no opportunity for aquarium-based behavioural observation.

Breeding

Reproductive biology of Enteromius nzigidaherai is undescribed in the literature. The reproductive mode expected for this Enteromius is egg-scattering with no parental care: adhesive eggs scattered among substrate material or plant roots, which hatch without guarding and receive no subsequent attention from either parent.

Given the species' Critically Endangered status and its restriction to two small highland streams in Burundi — one of which may already have lost its population — captive breeding is not currently practised and no husbandry protocol exists. Any future conservation breeding effort would require collection of wild specimens from the surviving population in the Kinwa or Muyovozi, subject to Burundian regulatory authority.

In the aquarium

Enteromius nzigidaherai is not present in the aquarium trade and is not suitable for private collection given its Critically Endangered status and the severe depletion of its wild populations. The species is known only from scientific specimens collected during the course of the 2024 description.

If future conservation aquaculture programmes are established for this species, the soft, acidic, cool highland stream water of its type locality — pH around 5.5 to 6.5, low conductivity, modest temperatures reflecting its montane Burundian range — would need to be replicated. As with most small Enteromius, the species would likely prove adaptable to standard small-barb husbandry conditions if its wild habitat parameters were maintained, but at present this remains entirely theoretical.

Conservation

Enteromius nzigidaherai is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, a status driven by its exceptionally restricted range — two small tributaries of the upper Malagarazi — and by evidence that the species may already have been extirpated from one of them. An area of occupancy and extent of occurrence both qualifying comfortably for CR thresholds, combined with ongoing habitat degradation, underlie the assessment.

Both the Muyovozi and Kinwa rivers are under threat from human activities in their catchments: agricultural encroachment, deforestation of gallery forest, and the conversion of riparian vegetation are reducing water quality and disrupting the stream habitat this species depends on. The species was described in the context of research supporting a protected area under implementation in the upper Malagarazi basin, making the formal description directly relevant to conservation planning in Burundi.

The authors of the original description explicitly note the conservation urgency — the species likely disappeared from one tributary between the time of collection and the time of publication. Rapid implementation of protection for the remaining catchment habitat in the Kinwa or Muyovozi represents the most critical immediate conservation action for this fish.
