Enteromius olivaceus, the Olivegreen Ufipa Barb, is a small Tanzanian cyprinid barely reaching 2 in in total length, described by Seegers in 1996 from highland streams draining the Ufipa Plateau in southwestern Tanzania. It is one of many compact Enteromius species endemic to East African river systems and, like its relatives, remains little-studied outside the country's borders. In the aquarium trade it is an occasional specialist find rather than a mainstream species, yet its modest size, peaceful temperament, and tolerance of a wide water-chemistry range make it a manageable barb for the informed keeper.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius olivaceus was first described as Barbus olivaceus by Lothar Seegers in 1996, placed in the sprawling Old World genus Barbus that for much of the twentieth century served as a wastebasket for African and Eurasian cyprinids. Subsequent molecular and morphological work dismantled that genus across several continents; African small barbs — traditionally grouped under Barbus and later Puntius — were re-examined and many reassigned to Enteromius, a genus originally proposed by Cope in 1867 and rehabilitated for this African lineage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Enteromius olivaceus (Seegers, 1996), the parenthetical authority indicating the move out of Seegers's original genus placement.

The species epithet olivaceus is Latin for "olive-coloured" or "olive-green", a straightforward reference to the overall body hue of the type specimens. Common usage in the English-speaking hobby follows this etymology: the species is known as the Olivegreen Ufipa Barb, with "Ufipa" referring to the Ufipa Plateau, the highland region of southwestern Tanzania from which it originates.

Morphology

Enteromius olivaceus is a slender, small-bodied barb reaching approximately 2 in in total length. The body is moderately compressed laterally and elongate by the standards of the genus, with a blunt snout and the two pairs of barbels characteristic of many Enteromius. The overall coloration is an olive-green to yellowish-brown above, fading to a paler flank and a whitish or silvery belly, without conspicuous banding or spotting patterns in preserved or aquarium specimens.

Sexual dimorphism is modest in this species, as in many small African barbs: females in spawning condition are noticeably rounder in the belly, while males tend toward a slimmer profile. In the absence of detailed published morphometric data for wild-caught individuals, hobbyist accounts suggest that coloration can intensify slightly in well-conditioned fish, particularly around the head and dorsal surface.

Habitat

The Olivegreen Ufipa Barb is endemic to Tanzania, associated with rivers and streams draining the Ufipa Plateau of the southern Lake Tanganyika drainage system in southwestern Tanzania. The plateau is a highland region at roughly 1,500–1,2625 ft elevation, where streams tend to be cool, relatively clear, and moderate in chemistry — reflecting the granitic and sandstone geology of the region rather than the hard, alkaline waters of Lake Tanganyika itself.

Aquarium-trade data indicate a temperature range of 73–82 °F and a pH of 6.5–7.5, with hardness from soft to moderately hard (around 6–16 °N dGH). These parameters are consistent with clear highland-stream habitats: not the soft blackwater of forest streams, nor the hard rift-lake water, but the intermediate chemistry typical of well-oxygenated montane drainages in the East African interior. Like many small Enteromius, it is likely a benthopelagic shoaler of stream margins, sheltering among aquatic vegetation and submerged roots.

Feeding

Enteromius olivaceus is an omnivore in the manner of most small African barbs, picking invertebrates, algae, and organic detritus from the substrate and water column in the wild. The highland streams it inhabits are likely to provide insect larvae, small crustaceans, and algal films as the main dietary items, supplemented by whatever fine organic matter is carried in the current.

In captivity it is reported to accept high-quality dry foods readily — flakes and small sinking pellets — with live and frozen foods (brine shrimp, bloodworm, daphnia) welcomed as supplemental enrichment. As with most small barbs, a varied diet supports best coloration and conditioning ahead of breeding.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius olivaceus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no pair bond and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning. When in breeding condition, a male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, the two fish pressing close together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

No territory is maintained, no nest is constructed, and the eggs receive no further attention from either parent. In a mixed group, multiple males will compete to drive a ripe female, making the spawning act a brief, vigorous event that may be repeated across the tank over the course of a morning.

Breeding

Breeding Enteromius olivaceus in the aquarium follows the standard protocol for small egg-scattering barbs. A separate, shallow spawning tank fitted with fine-leaved plants, a spawning mop, or a mesh layer over marbles helps protect the eggs from being eaten by the adults. Soft to moderately hard water at the upper end of the species' temperature range, combined with a period of conditioning on live and frozen foods, brings fish into spawning condition.

After spawning the adults should be removed, as they will consume both eggs and fry. Eggs are reported to hatch within approximately 24 hours at tropical temperatures. The larvae are initially inactive and absorb their yolk sac before becoming free-swimming; at that stage they require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial fry food, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. FishBase records a lifespan of approximately five years for the species under good aquarium conditions.

In the aquarium

The Olivegreen Ufipa Barb is an uncommon species in the hobby, appearing sporadically in specialist imports rather than mainstream trade. Its small adult size (under 2 in) and peaceful disposition make it suitable for a community aquarium housing similarly sized, non-aggressive fishes. As a shoaling species it is best kept in groups of six or more individuals, which allows the natural social dynamics of the group to develop and reduces individual stress.

Water parameters should reflect its highland-stream origins: clean, well-oxygenated water in the range of 73–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and soft to moderately hard. Moderate current and good mechanical filtration suit the species well. A planted aquarium with open swimming space and some shelter suits it nicely. Diet is undemanding — quality flake and pellet foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates constitute a straightforward maintenance regime.

Conservation

Enteromius olivaceus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment date recorded as 31 January 2006. The species is a Tanzania endemic, confined to streams draining the Ufipa Plateau in the southwestern part of the country. While its restricted geographic range might suggest vulnerability, no major population-level declines were identified at the time of assessment, and the Ufipa highland streams do not face the same intensity of agricultural or urban pressure as lowland river systems elsewhere in Tanzania.

Longer-term concerns for highland-stream endemics in East Africa include land-use change on plateau catchments, increased sedimentation from cultivation, and climate-driven shifts in stream hydrology — factors that disproportionately affect species with narrow natural ranges. Continued monitoring of the Ufipa drainage would help clarify whether the LC status remains current for this little-studied species.
