Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius owenae was originally described as Barbus owenae by Ricardo-Bertram in 1943, the type locality being the Chambezi River and Lake Bangweulu system in what is now Zambia. The species was subsequently moved into Enteromius, a large genus that accommodates the majority of small African barbs previously lumped under the paraphyletic Barbus or Puntius. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid combination Enteromius owenae (Ricardo-Bertram, 1943), with the parenthetical authority marking the original description under a different genus.
Enteromius is a complex, species-rich grouping distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, with members in nearly every major river system from the Nile to the Zambezi and beyond. Many species in the genus are known from only one or a handful of collections, and E. owenae is among the least-studied — its systematics, phylogenetic placement within Enteromius, and relationship to neighbouring Zambezi-basin congeners have not been examined in depth in the published literature.
Morphology
Enteromius owenae is a small, slender barb reaching a recorded maximum of 1.5 in standard length (SL) per FishBase, placing it among the diminutive end of the genus. As with most small Enteromius, the body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, the mouth small and terminal or subterminal, and the fins unremarkable in size. Detailed published meristic data beyond the standard length figure are not available from accessible sources.
Colour pattern and fin morphology in life are not recorded in the scientific sources consulted here. The original description by Ricardo-Bertram (1943) would contain the diagnostic characters, but those details are not reproduced in the secondary literature currently available.
Habitat
The species is known from the Chambezi River and Lake Bangweulu in northern Zambia. Lake Bangweulu is a vast, shallow floodplain lake system — one of the largest inland water bodies in Africa when its surrounding swamps are included — lying at an elevation of roughly 1,459 ft on the central African plateau. The Chambezi River is the principal inlet, draining the higher ground to the north and east before spreading into the Bangweulu swamps.
Water chemistry data specific to E. owenae are not on record. The Bangweulu system is generally a warm, low-gradient, turbid to slightly tea-stained environment; chemistry varies between the open lake (moderately mineralised) and the surrounding swamp fringes (softer, more acidic). Like most small barbs of this type, E. owenae likely inhabits shallow, vegetated margins, floodplain channels, or slow-moving tributaries rather than deep open water, but this is inferred from ecology of congeners rather than direct observation.
Feeding
No published dietary studies exist for Enteromius owenae. Small Enteromius species are generally opportunistic omnivores, taking small invertebrates (insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms), algae, and fine organic detritus from the substrate and water column. The species' small size suggests a preference for fine-particulate and soft-bodied prey items accessible in shallow, vegetated habitats.

Mating
Enteromius owenae has not been studied in the context of reproductive behaviour. As a member of the cyprinid family, it is expected to follow the egg-scattering, non-guarding pattern universal in barbs: when ripe, a male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief spawning rushes. No pair bond is formed, no territory is defended beyond a transient courtship chase, and neither sex attends the eggs afterward.
Spawning seasonality in the Bangweulu system is likely linked to the annual flood cycle, which drives conditions in the surrounding wetlands — a pattern common to floodplain cyprinids across central Africa — but this remains undocumented for this species.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Enteromius owenae appear in the hobby literature, and the species is not known to be in the aquarium trade. In keeping with all barbs, the reproductive strategy is egg-scattering with no parental care: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered over plants, roots, or substrate during the spawning act and are abandoned immediately. Eggs and larvae develop without adult attendance, and adults will consume eggs if they encounter them.

Enteromius owenae is not established in the aquarium hobby and is essentially unknown in the trade. No care information exists in the hobby literature. Its small size (under 1.5 in SL) would in principle make it suitable for small aquaria if ever collected and maintained, and a diet of fine live and prepared foods typical for small African barbs would be a reasonable starting point.
Given the species' Data Deficient conservation status and extremely limited scientific record, collection for the trade would require assessment of wild population status before any commercial harvest could be considered responsible.

The Bangweulu wetland system is a Ramsar-listed site and supports important fisheries and wildlife, but surrounding catchments face pressures from subsistence agriculture, seasonal burning, and increasing human settlement. How these affect small, specialised fish species like E. owenae is not documented. A targeted survey to establish the species' current range, abundance, and habitat requirements would be a prerequisite for any future Red List reassessment.
