Enteromius paludinosus, the straightfin barb, is a robust, wide-ranging cyprinid found across a broad arc of sub-Saharan Africa — from Ethiopia and the East African Rift lakes south through the Zambezi system to KwaZulu-Natal and west to Angola. It is a fish of standing and slow-moving waters: lakes, swamps, marshes, and the quiet vegetated margins of rivers, where it forages opportunistically on insects, molluscs, crustaceans, algae and detritus. Described by Wilhelm Peters in 1852 under the name Barbus paludinosus — the 'marsh barb' — it has since been transferred to Enteromius as systematic revisions of African cyprinids continue. Tolerant of warm, variable conditions and abundant in the basins it inhabits, it is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius paludinosus was described by the German naturalist Wilhelm Peters in 1852 under the combination Barbus paludinosus, the type material coming from what is now Mozambique. The species long circulated in the literature under Barbus — the sprawling, paraphyletic wastebasket genus that once absorbed nearly every African and Asian small barb — and is also found in older sources under Barbus paludinosus (Peters, 1852). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now places it in Enteromius, a genus resurrected for a large assemblage of African small barbs as workers continue to disaggregate the old Barbus sensu lato.

The parenthetical authority marks the move out of Peters' original genus. Within Enteromius, paludinosus belongs to a complex of morphologically similar, ecologically generalist African stream barbs. The genus remains under active systematic revision and some combinations in the literature may reflect intermediate treatments; the current valid name is Enteromius paludinosus (Peters, 1852) per the Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

The straightfin barb is a moderately large barb reaching up to 6 in standard length, with a fusiform, laterally somewhat compressed body typical of a fish that moves between open water and dense aquatic vegetation. Colouration is generally silvery to olive-bronze on the flanks, with a pale belly; a dark lateral stripe or row of spots is variably expressed across populations and developmental stages. Fins are relatively plain — the common name refers to the unremarkable, straight-edged dorsal — without the bold barring or intense colour of many ornamental barbs.

Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern common in barbs: females grow larger and become noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid. Males are slimmer and may show stronger colour at spawning time. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, reflecting its use of both the water column and the substrate in its typical marshy or lake-shore habitats.

Habitat

Enteromius paludinosus is a habitat generalist among African barbs, favouring quiet, well-vegetated waters rather than fast-running streams. It is most abundant in lakes, swamps, marshes, seasonal floodplains and the vegetated, often sandy-bottomed margins of larger rivers. FishBase characterises it as occupying a pH range of 6.8–7.8 and hardness of 5–25 dH across a temperature band of 66–82 °F — reflecting the diversity of African rift-associated and savanna waters it inhabits rather than any single chemistry.

Across its range, from the highland lakes of Ethiopia (including Lake Ziway and Lake Naivasha) through the Rift lakes of East Africa — Lake Victoria, Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika drainages — and south to the Zambezi system, Angola and KwaZulu-Natal, the species encounters a wide range of conditions. It is one of the most consistently abundant small cyprinids in East and Central African freshwater surveys.

Feeding

The straightfin barb is an opportunistic omnivore. Studies in Lake Ziway, Ethiopia document a broad diet spanning insects and their larvae, snails, crustaceans, filamentous algae, diatoms and organic detritus — the full range of items available in the shallow, productive waters it favours. Research at Lake Naivasha, Kenya, has characterised length-weight relationships consistent with a fish in good condition year-round, including during the rainy season when floodwater expands foraging opportunities.

This dietary flexibility underpins the species' wide distribution. It can exploit algal blooms, benthic invertebrate communities or the drift of surface invertebrates depending on local conditions and season, making it resilient in the varied and often turbid waters it occupies.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius paludinosus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No permanent pair bond is formed, and no nest or territory is defended beyond transient courtship activity. Studies at Lakes Chilwa and Chiuta in Malawi document the species as the most abundant cyprinid at spawning sites (accounting for 57.8% of fish recorded at those sites), with active fish in the 2 in total-length range, indicating that even younger adults participate in spawning aggregations.

During mating a male drives a gravid female through aquatic vegetation or over substrate, with both fish releasing eggs and milt simultaneously. Eggs are adhesive and settle among plants, roots or fine substrate. Adults show no further interest in the eggs and will consume them if encountered.

Breeding

Breeding in Enteromius paludinosus follows the standard barb pattern: eggs are scattered in shallow, vegetated areas and receive no parental care. The species appears to use seasonal cues — rainfall, water level rise and temperature shifts — to time spawning, as is typical of African small barbs in savanna and rift-margin habitats where wet-season flooding creates temporary but productive nursery areas.

In an aquarium context the species can be induced to spawn with the provision of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, a slight temperature rise and generous feeding on live or frozen invertebrates. Eggs hatch within one to two days and the fry become free-swimming within a further few days. Adults eat eggs and fry opportunistically, so separation after spawning is advisable. Fry accept infusoria and freshly hatched brine shrimp as first foods.

In the aquarium

The straightfin barb is an uncommon aquarium subject in the Western hobby despite its wide distribution and robust constitution. When kept, it benefits from a spacious tank with open swimming areas, some planting, and water conditions in the mid-range of its documented preferences: pH 6.8–7.8, moderate hardness, and temperatures of 66–82 °F. Its tolerance of a broad chemistry range makes it adaptable to many municipal water supplies.

As an active, omnivorous shoaler it does best in groups and is not aggressive toward similarly sized tankmates. It accepts a wide range of prepared and frozen foods. The species' relatively large adult size — up to 6 in — means it needs more room than most ornamental barbs typically afforded in the hobby, and small tanks are unsuitable. Its primary interest lies in species-focused and African biotope aquaria rather than general community tanks.

Conservation

Enteromius paludinosus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2018). The species is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, abundant across much of its range, and shows no evidence of range-wide decline sufficient to warrant a threatened category. Its tolerance of varied water conditions gives it resilience to moderate habitat degradation.

None the less, several of the lakes and wetland systems it inhabits face pressures from water extraction, agricultural runoff, introduced species and climate-driven water-level fluctuation — threats particularly acute in the Ethiopian Rift Valley lakes and the shallow Malawian lakes within its range. Research at Lakes Chilwa and Chiuta in Malawi documents the species in active use of spawning sites, underlining the importance of shallow vegetated lake margins to its reproduction; degradation of those margins through drainage, siltation or invasive macrophytes could affect recruitment even without altering the species' broad-scale assessment.
