Enteromius parablabes was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Daget in 1957, with the type locality in the Atakora massif of northern Benin. The species was originally placed in the genus Barbus, which once served as a vast wastebasket for Old World minnow-like fishes. Modern molecular and morphological work has reorganised these extensively; African species from this lineage are now largely assigned to Enteromius, a genus resurrected and redefined to hold a substantial West and Central African barb radiation. The parenthetical authority — (Daget, 1957) — records the original describer while signalling that the species has since been moved out of its original genus.
The epithet parablabes is a compound Greek construction meaning roughly "alongside Labeo" or "near the Labeo barbs", likely chosen by Daget to reflect a morphological or ecological resemblance to labeid fishes. The genus Enteromius currently includes dozens of species distributed across sub-Saharan river basins, from the Volta and Niger systems of West Africa east to the Great Lakes region and south to the Zambezi and Limpopo drainages. Morphology
Enteromius parablabes is a small, slender barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. Like other members of the genus it has two pairs of barbels — an anterior rostral pair and a posterior maxillary pair — that are unequal in length, a characteristic shared across much of Enteromius. The body has the moderately compressed, fusiform shape typical of stream-adapted barbs.
A dark lateral band runs along the flank, providing the most visually distinctive field mark. Scale counts and fin-ray counts are diagnostic within the genus but are not separately published in the cache data available. Coloration details beyond the lateral band remain sparse in accessible literature, reflecting the relative obscurity of this species in both the scientific and hobbyist literature.
Habitat
The species is known from the upper drainages of the Pendjari River in the Atakora chain of northern Benin — a highland area where streams descend steeply before joining the Volta system to the south. FishBase records it as benthopelagic, suggesting it occupies both the bottom and the lower water column, as is typical for small barbs that forage among substrate and leaf litter.

Feeding

Breeding
There are no published aquarium breeding accounts for Enteromius parablabes, and the species is not available in the ornamental trade. By analogy with other small Enteromius and African stream barbs, breeding would be expected to follow the typical egg-scattering pattern: adhesive eggs deposited over fine substrate, gravel, or among plant roots, with no parental investment. Fry hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, depending on water warmth, and begin feeding on microorganisms within a few days.
In the wild, spawning in Volta-system barbs is likely seasonal, tied to the onset of the rainy season when river discharge increases and food availability peaks. The restricted, protected-area range of E. parablabes means that captive breeding, should the species ever enter the hobby, would require sourcing from research collections rather than the trade.
In the aquarium
Enteromius parablabes is not present in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered by hobbyists. Its small size — under 3 in standard length — and presumed tolerance of a wide range of freshwater conditions would in principle make it manageable in a species tank or West African biotope setup alongside other small, peaceful fishes of the Volta and Niger basins.
For those setting up a Pendjari or Volta headwater biotope, appropriate companions would be other small West African cyprinids, mormyrids, and small characins from the same drainage. Water conditions based on the Atakora massif environment would lean toward clear, moderately warm, well-oxygenated water with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH influenced by the laterite bedrock. Given its conservation status and restricted range, any captive specimens would most likely derive from research or zoological collections.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Enteromius parablabes as Least Concern in 2019, as reported by FishBase. However, the species has a markedly restricted range, apparently limited to the Atakora massif headwaters within Benin — a relatively small area for a species already classified as an endemic. The protection afforded by Pendjari National Park, which covers much of its known range, represents the most significant safeguard currently in place.
The broader threats facing West African freshwater biodiversity — agricultural expansion, small-scale dam construction, seasonal water extraction, and pollution from mining and farming — affect even protected watersheds over time. The 2019 fish fauna survey by Moritz and Laleye documents the assemblage in Pendjari and provides a baseline for future monitoring. Given the very limited endemic range, any significant hydrological disturbance in the Atakora headwaters could have disproportionate consequences for this species, and a future reassessment with updated distributional data would be warranted.
