Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius pellegrini was described by Max Poll in 1939 under the name Barbus pellegrini, placing it in the sprawling old genus Barbus that once contained virtually all African and Eurasian barbs. The species epithet honours the French ichthyologist and zoologist Jacques J. Pellegrin (1873–1944), a prolific describer of African freshwater fishes and a major figure in early twentieth-century French zoology.
Subsequent revisions progressively divided the old Barbus sensu lato into a constellation of genera reflecting African and Eurasian lineages more precisely. Enteromius pellegrini follows current Catalog of Fishes usage, where the genus Enteromius accommodates a large number of African barbs formerly spread across Barbus and related names. The old combination Barbus pellegrini remains in the older literature and museum collections and is useful for tracing historical records.
The species is part of a diverse assemblage of rift-associated barbs in the central African lakes — a group that includes taxa associated with the 'sawfin barb' complex around Lakes Edward and Albert — though the taxonomy of closely related forms in that region continues to be refined.
Morphology
Enteromius pellegrini is a slender, fusiform barb reaching approximately 4.5 in standard length (or about 4.5 in total length) in the largest recorded specimens. The body is laterally compressed and streamlined, consistent with an active fish of moving inflows and lake margins.
The dorsal surface is brown-green, fading to a silvery belly. The unpaired fins — dorsal, anal and caudal — are brown-yellow in colour, matching the warm tones of the body. Like most members of Enteromius it lacks elaborate fin ornamentation or prominent markings, relying instead on cryptic countershading suited to its habitat among submerged structure and benthic substrates.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the drainage basins of Lakes Kivu, Edward, Tanganyika and Rukwa, spanning parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Tanzania. Additional records extend to the Pinga area on the Lualaba, a major upper tributary of the Congo River.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic — living and foraging near the bottom while also occupying the water column. Within Lake Kivu it is most often encountered in the littoral zone and in the affluent streams entering the lake, where submerged structure, riparian vegetation and substrate heterogeneity support invertebrate prey. It is characterised as scarce in the open lake but more consistently present in inflowing rivers. As a tropical rift-lake species, water temperatures across its range are warm, generally in the range typical of East African highlands and rift valleys.
Feeding
Enteromius pellegrini is entomophagous — insects and their larvae form the principal component of its diet. This dietary preference is documented in fish diversity studies of Lake Kivu, where the species has been characterised as an insect feeder exploiting the invertebrate communities of the littoral zone and inflowing streams.
Aquatic insect larvae, emerging adults and terrestrial insects that fall to the surface are the likely staples, a diet shared by many small African barbs that inhabit structurally complex littoral and riverine habitats. In the aquarium, insect-based foods such as bloodworm (chironomid larvae), daphnia and other invertebrate items replicate this natural diet most closely.
Mating
Enteromius pellegrini, like all barbs in the family Cyprinidae, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No parental care has been documented or would be expected in this genus. In courtship a driven male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief spawning passes.
No pair bond forms beyond the act of spawning itself, and neither sex defends a territory or attends the eggs after they are scattered. The adhesive eggs fall among plant material, roots or onto the substrate, where they are left entirely to their own development.
Breeding
Natural breeding biology for Enteromius pellegrini has not been formally documented in the literature accessible here; the species is not bred routinely in the hobby. By analogy with other African Enteromius and with the consistent reproductive mode of the Cyprinidae more broadly, spawning is expected to occur as egg-scattering over plants or substrate with no parental investment — a pattern confirmed for the genus.
In an aquarium setting, conditioning on live and frozen invertebrate foods, provision of fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, and a slight rise in temperature are the standard triggers for encouraging spawning attempts in small African barbs. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.
In the aquarium
Enteromius pellegrini is not a commonly traded species and is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby. Its natural range — the rift lakes and streams of the eastern Congo basin — is not a major source of commercially harvested ornamental fish, and the species has no established common name in the trade.
For those who do obtain it, basic care requirements inferred from its ecology would include warm water, good filtration, a varied diet emphasising invertebrate foods, and tankmates of similar temperament and scale. As with other shoaling barbs, keeping the species in a group would be preferable to isolating individuals. Its modest size (under 4.5 in) places it within reach of a medium community aquarium.
Conservation
Enteromius pellegrini is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded as 31 March 2021 (Assessment ID 182083). The species' range spans several countries across the eastern Congo basin and Great Lakes region — DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Tanzania — and this geographic breadth, combined with presence in multiple lake and river systems, underpins the LC determination.
The primary threats facing fish communities in Lake Kivu and its tributaries include the introduction of invasive species (Limnothrissa miodon, the Tanganyika sardine, was introduced decades ago and restructured the lake's food web), water quality changes from agriculture and settlements, and climate variability affecting water column straturation in this unusual gas-rich lake. None of these threats are considered to place E. pellegrini at sufficient risk to warrant a threatened category at this time, but the species' apparent scarcity in the open lake underscores the value of its tributary habitats for long-term population persistence.
