Enteromius punctitaeniatus is a small West African barb described by Daget in 1954, originally placed in the genus Barbus and now assigned to Enteromius — the large, paraphyletic assemblage of smallish African barbs that recent molecular work continues to revise. A benthopelagic freshwater fish reaching about 3 in in total length, it ranges across several major West African river systems including the Chad, Niger, Volta, and Cross basins, and has been recorded in Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting a distribution broad enough to buffer against localised pressures.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius punctitaeniatus was described by Jacques Daget in 1954 under the original combination Barbus punctitaeniatus. The parenthetical authority in its current name, (Daget, 1954), marks the transfer from Barbus into the genus Enteromius, the sprawling grouping that received most of the smallish African barbs when the old, unwieldy Barbus was progressively dismembered. FishBase records the species under Enteromius punctitaeniatus and continues to maintain a legacy entry under Barbus punctitaeniatus reflecting earlier usage.

The genus Enteromius is itself not universally accepted as monophyletic, and ongoing phylogenetic work on African cyprinids may result in further splits or reassignments. For now the Catalog of Fishes recognises Enteromius as the valid genus for this species. The epithet punctitaeniatus is a compound Latin adjective: punctum (a point or dot) and taenia (a band or stripe), combined with the adjectival suffix -atus — most probably alluding to a dotted or spotted lateral band or markings along the body that distinguished the new species to Daget's eye.

Morphology

Enteromius punctitaeniatus is a small, slender-bodied barb. FishBase gives a maximum total length of 3 in, which places it firmly among the smaller members of the genus. It has 11 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays, proportions typical of the African small-barb body plan.

Detailed meristic and colour data from the primary description are not widely reproduced in the secondary literature, and field photographs of confirmed wild specimens are scarce. Based on Daget's original name, the species likely bears a spotted or streaked lateral band that gave rise to the epithet punctitaeniatus — though further study of type material would be needed to characterise the live coloration precisely. The body is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the lower and mid-water column over the stream or river bed.

Habitat

The species inhabits fresh waters across several major West African drainage systems: the Chad, Niger, and Volta river basins, rivers draining Côte d'Ivoire, and the Cross River system in Cameroon. This broad range encompasses a variety of environments, from seasonally flooded savanna streams and low-gradient river margins to more permanent river channels, across the Sahel and Guinea savanna zones of West Africa.

FishBase records a tropical temperature range of 72–79 °F (72–79 °F) for the species. Water chemistry will vary considerably across such a wide range — savanna-zone rivers tend toward neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard conditions during the dry season, softening during seasonal flood pulses. The species is classified as benthopelagic, suggesting it forages close to the substrate in rivers and streams with sandy, gravelly, or silty beds.

Feeding

Like most small African Enteromius, E. punctitaeniatus is presumed to be an omnivore, taking small invertebrates, algae, and organic detritus picked from the substrate and from the water column. The genus is broadly opportunistic, and species occupying savanna rivers and streams typically consume whatever seasonally abundant food is available — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, fallen terrestrial invertebrates during floods, and algal films on rocks and woody debris.

Specific dietary studies for this species have not been published in widely accessible literature. In captivity, small African barbs of this type generallyaccept standard prepared foods (crushed flake, small pellets) alongside live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

Mating

Enteromius punctitaeniatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, consistent with the reproductive strategy of barbs generally. There is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, and no mouthbrooding. When in breeding condition, a male will pursue a gravid female through vegetation, submerged roots, or over the substrate, the pair pressing close together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

No pair bond is formed beyond the spawning act itself, and the adults exhibit no territorial defence of eggs or young. Like most cyprinids of this habit, the adults will readily consume their own eggs if given the opportunity. Spawning in the wild is likely linked to the onset of the rainy season, when rising water temperatures, increased flow, and shifting photoperiod act as cues across West African river systems.

Breeding

In aquarium conditions, small African barbs of the Enteromius type are bred using methods common to egg-scattering cyprinids. A separate, shallower spawning vessel is set up with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop and a substrate grid or mesh base so that the scattered, adhesive eggs fall out of reach of the adults. Well-conditioned pairs are introduced, and spawning typically follows within the first day or two.

A gravid female may release a considerable number of small adhesive eggs in a single session. The adults should be removed immediately after spawning is observed. Eggs hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming after a further few days, at which point they take infusoria and finely powdered food, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Parental care is absent at every stage.

In the aquarium

Enteromius punctitaeniatus is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and is not a species that appears in mainstream aquarium retail. It is kept occasionally by hobbyists with a specific interest in West African fishes, particularly those building biotope aquaria representing the Niger, Volta, or Chad basins. In such a context it would suit a setup with a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, scattered smooth stones, some driftwood, and sparse planting, with water maintained at 72–79 °F (72–79 °F) and a broadly neutral pH.

As a small schooling barb it should be kept in groups of at least six to allow natural social behaviour and reduce the stress of isolation. Compatible tankmates from a West African biotope perspective include other small endemic cyprinids, West African dwarf cichlids (such as Anomalochromis and Pelmatochromis species), and small characids from the region. It is an active, undemanding feeder in aquarium conditions.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Enteromius punctitaeniatus as Least Concern in the 2020 update, reflecting its occurrence across multiple large river basins in West Africa — the Chad, Niger, Volta, and Cross systems — and an absence of evidence pointing to a major range-wide decline. A species distributed across such geographically distinct drainages is unlikely to be threatened by localised events alone.

That said, West African freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from agricultural expansion, water extraction for irrigation, artisanal and commercial fishing, dam construction on major rivers, and pollution from mining and urbanisation. The Niger and Volta in particular support large human populations and have seen substantial hydrological modification. While these pressures are real, E. punctitaeniatus's broad distribution means that no single impact is likely to imperil the species as a whole under current conditions.
