Enteromius quadrilineatus is a small African barb reaching around 2 in, native to the Malagarazi River system — the principal river flowing into Lake Tanganyika from the west, crossing Burundi and Tanzania. Described by David in 1937 under the genus Barbus and later transferred to Enteromius, it belongs to a large and varied assemblage of African cyprinids that spans the continent's inland waters. Its restricted range within a single river basin, combined with habitat degradation in the Malagarazi catchment, has led to its assessment as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius quadrilineatus was described by David in 1937 as Barbus quadrilineatus, a placement that held for much of the twentieth century within the expansive old genus Barbus — a wastebasket taxon that once housed hundreds of African and Asian cyprinids. Molecular and morphological revisions progressively dismembered the group, and most small African barbs now sit in Enteromius, established as a valid genus to contain this African radiation.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names, records the current valid combination as Enteromius quadrilineatus (David, 1937), the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer out of David's original genus. GBIF records the older combination Barbus quadrilineatus David, 1937 as a synonym. The species epithet quadrilineatus is Latin for "four-lined", likely referring to stripe or lateral-line features in the original description.

Morphology

Enteromius quadrilineatus is a small, fusiform barb with a body shape typical of flowing-water cyprinids — streamlined and laterally compressed but not as deep-bodied as some lake-dwelling relatives. Breeding

Captive breeding of Enteromius quadrilineatus has not been documented in the available hobbyist literature, and the species is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. As with most small African barbs, tankmates should be peaceful and of similar size. Water conditions matching the Malagarazi basin — warm tropical temperatures, moderate chemistry — would be appropriate. In the absence of hobbyist records, care guidelines must be extrapolated from the biology of related Enteromius rather than from direct experience.

The primary driver of its threatened status is habitat loss in the Malagarazi River basin — a catchment that has experienced increasing agricultural pressure, deforestation, and associated sedimentation and water-quality degradation across parts of Burundi and Tanzania.

Being confined to a single river system makes the species inherently vulnerable; any significant deterioration of water quality or flow regime across the Malagarazi catchment represents a range-wide threat. It does not appear to be a target of the ornamental trade, so collection pressure is not considered a factor. Effective conservation depends on watershed management and the protection of riparian vegetation in the Malagarazi basin.
