Enteromius trispiloides was described in 1987 by Christian Lévêque, Guy Teugels and Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde. The original combination was Barbus trispiloides — the genus Barbus having historically served as a repository for an enormous and heterogeneous collection of small African and Eurasian cyprinids. FishBase records the species under its old combination as Barbus trispiloides (record ID 5312), reflecting the transition that has occurred as African small barbs have been redistributed into Enteromius.
The genus Enteromius was resurrected to accommodate the African small-barb radiation that had accumulated under Barbus, separating them from the Eurasian barbels with which they share only superficial similarities.
