Enteromius trispilopleura is a small African barb endemic to Lake Tana, the vast highland lake in northwestern Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile. Described by George Albert Boulenger in 1902 under the former combination Barbus trispilopleura, it belongs to the diverse assemblage of small barbs that evolved within Lake Tana's clear, shallow waters — one of the largest natural lakes in Africa and a notable freshwater biodiversity hotspot. The species is distinguished from its closest relative, Enteromius humilis, by a darker dorsal colouration, smaller adult body size, and lower fecundity, though whether it represents a fully independent species or an ecotype of humilis has been a matter of scientific debate.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius trispilopleura was originally described by the Belgian-born British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1902, placed in the genus Barbus — the broad catch-all then applied to almost all Old World barbs. For most of the twentieth century it was known under the combination Barbus trispilopleura (Boulenger, 1902). The current valid genus, Enteromius, was established to accommodate the majority of small African barbs following a broader restructuring of the family Cyprinidae; the Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Enteromius trispilopleura (Boulenger, 1902).

The species is part of the Lake Tana small-barb assemblage, a radiation of closely related forms whose boundaries are not always clear. A study published in Environmental Biology of Fishes examined both E. trispilopleura and E. humilis and noted that E. trispilopleura is phenotypically distinguishable by a darker back, smaller size at first reproduction, and lower fecundity — but raised the possibility that it represents an ecotype or variant of E. humilis rather than a fully independent species. The Catalog of Fishes and IUCN Red List treat it as a valid species, which is the convention followed here.

Morphology

Enteromius trispilopleura is a small barb with a standard length under 4 in; most individuals encountered in the wild are considerably smaller, consistent with a species that reaches first reproduction at a small body size. It has the compact, moderately deep body plan typical of small Enteromius, with a subterminal mouth and the pair of short barbels characteristic of the genus.

The species is distinguished from the closely related E. humilis by a conspicuously darker dorsal colouration — a feature that was among the principal characters used to separate the two in systematic studies of the Lake Tana barb assemblage. Detailed meristic and morphometric data for this species remain limited in the accessible literature, and description here follows what has been formally published.

Habitat

Enteromius trispilopleura is endemic to Lake Tana in the Amhara region of northwestern Ethiopia, inhabiting clear, shallow areas of the lake characterised by rocky substrates and aquatic vegetation. Lake Tana sits at approximately 1,2625 ft above sea level on the Ethiopian Plateau, giving it a cooler and less variable thermal regime than equatorial African lakes at lower elevations.

The shallow littoral zone favoured by this species provides a structurally complex environment of rocks, macrophytes and submerged plants — habitat shared with other members of the Lake Tana small-barb community. The lake is fed by numerous rivers and drains southward as the Blue Nile (Abbay), a system that has shaped the distribution and diversity of its endemic fauna over geological time.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for Enteromius trispilopleura are sparse in the published literature. Based on the foraging ecology of comparable small Enteromius species from East African highland lakes, the species is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates, algae, plant material and organic detritus from the rocky and vegetated littoral zone it inhabits.

The shallow, clear-water habitat suggests that periphyton, small benthic invertebrates, and zooplankton near the margins are all likely dietary components. As with many small barbs of comparable body size and habitat, feeding is probably continuous throughout the day.

Mating

Enteromius trispilopleura, in common with all members of the family Cyprinidae, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed and no parental care is provided at any stage. A gravid female is pursued by one or more males through vegetation or over the rocky substrate of the littoral zone, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, close-contact drives.

The research on the Lake Tana small-barb assemblage noted that E. trispilopleura has lower fecundity than its close relative E. humilis — a smaller clutch size relative to body size is among the characters that differentiate the two. There is no pair bonding beyond the immediate act of spawning; adults disperse immediately after egg release.

Breeding

Like all barbs, E. trispilopleura scatters adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation, over rocky substrates, or into the gravel of the littoral zone, after which the adults provide no further care. Eggs are left to develop unattended; adults, if they remain in proximity, may consume the eggs. The fry are entirely self-sufficient from hatching.

In the wild, spawning is likely triggered by seasonal cues tied to Lake Tana's water-level fluctuations, temperature changes, and the productivity cycles of its littoral zone. The species' comparatively low fecundity relative to E. humilis, as documented in the Environmental Biology of Fishes study, suggests a somewhat different reproductive strategy within this small-barb community, though the ecological underpinnings of this difference are not well described in the available literature.

In the aquarium

Enteromius trispilopleura is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and should be considered a specialist fish. It is endemic to a single Ethiopian highland lake and is not among the barb species mass-produced for commerce. Should it become available, its care would follow the requirements of other small Enteromius from highland East African waters: a well-oxygenated aquarium with clear, moderately hard water, cooler temperatures reflecting its high-altitude lake origin, and a varied diet of small live, frozen and prepared foods.

As a shoaling species it should be kept in groups. The clear, rocky-littoral habitat of Lake Tana suggests it would benefit from substrate structure and some planting, with open swimming space. Its small size and suspected peaceful temperament make it suitable for a species tank or a carefully composed community with comparably sized, non-aggressive fishes.

Conservation

Enteromius trispilopleura is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment, taxon ID 181758). The species is endemic to Lake Tana, one of Ethiopia's most important freshwater bodies, where it appears to maintain a stable population in the shallow, clear-water littoral zone.

Lake Tana and its catchment face a range of anthropogenic pressures including agricultural runoff, watershed deforestation, increased siltation, and the expansion of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), an invasive floating plant that has colonised large areas of the lake's shallows and reduces light penetration and dissolved oxygen in affected zones. The endemic barb fauna of Lake Tana — including E. trispilopleura — is potentially sensitive to these habitat changes, even if no range-wide population decline has triggered an uplisting. The lake's biodiversity value has been recognised in regional conservation contexts, and continued monitoring of the small-barb assemblage is warranted as pressure on the watershed intensifies.
