Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius yardiensis was described in 2020 by Englmaier, Tesfaye, and Bogutskaya as a new species from the Awash River drainage of Ethiopia, published in a study accessible through NCBI PMC (article PMC6978609). The species name yardiensis refers to Lake Yardi, the floodplain lake adjacent to the type locality and part of the species' restricted range.
The genus Enteromius is a large, historically complex African cyprinid assemblage that has absorbed and shed numerous species over the decades as molecular and morphological studies have refined its boundaries. The Catalog of Fishes records the current valid combination as Enteromius yardiensis Englmaier, Tesfaye & Bogutskaya, 2020. The holotype specimen measured 1.5 in standard length (SL), with the largest known individual reaching 2 in SL.
Morphologically the species is unusual within Enteromius. The complete absence of the anterior barbel (present in most relatives), the absence of the medial supraorbital sensory canal, and only 1–3 scale rows between the lateral line and the anus are the diagnostic combination that separates it from other Awash basin barbs and more widely distributed Enteromius species of the Horn of Africa.
Morphology
Enteromius yardiensis is a small barb, with the largest documented specimen at 2 in SL and the holotype at 1.5 in SL. Like most Enteromius it has the laterally compressed, moderately deep body typical of small African stream barbs, but it is set apart by the absence of the anterior (rostral) barbel — an unusual condition in a genus where barbels are generally present.
The medial supraorbital sensory canal is absent, a neurological character consistent with life in turbid, warm floodplain water where visual and lateral-line inputs may be weighted differently. The number of scale rows between the lateral line and the anus is low (1–3), further distinguishing it from congeners. Detailed meristic data beyond these characters are not yet widely published, as the species is very recently described and has received limited post-description study.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the lower reaches of the Awash River in the Afar Depression of eastern Ethiopia, and to the adjacent floodplain lakes, most notably Lake Yardi — the water body after which the species is named. The type locality, Kada Bada, lies at approximately 10°13'53"N, 40°34'43"E at an elevation of 1844 ft.
The habitat at the time of collection was characterised by warm, turbid water typical of lowland Afar floodplains: the original description records temperatures of 79–89 °F. The species prefers shallow shoreline zones, slow side channels, and stagnant or near-stagnant floodplain water bodies, where it associates with aquatic plants and submerged woody debris. This is savanna-floodplain habitat rather than clear forest stream habitat; chemistry data beyond temperature are not published in the available sources.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study has been published for Enteromius yardiensis. Small Enteromius barbs in comparable floodplain and shoreline habitats are generally omnivorous opportunists, taking small invertebrates (insect larvae, crustaceans, and worms), algae, plant detritus, and organic particulate matter from the substrate and the water column.
The species' association with aquatic vegetation and woody debris in shallow, warm floodplain water suggests it forages in and around structurally complex microhabitats where invertebrate and plant material accumulate. Specific diet data await direct stomach-content analysis.
Mating
No spawning observations have been recorded for Enteromius yardiensis specifically. As with all barbs, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner following the reproductive mode universal within Cyprinidae. Courtship in comparable Enteromius species involves driving behaviour in which a male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair releasing eggs and milt simultaneously.
No nest, bubble-nest, territory, or pair bond is established beyond the brief act of spawning itself. Spawning in the lower Awash basin likely follows a seasonal rhythm tied to floodplain hydrology — rising water in the wet season expands available habitat and may trigger reproductive activity, as is typical for African floodplain cyprinids.
Breeding
Enteromius yardiensis has not been kept or bred in captivity, and no breeding data are available. Applying the barb reproductive template: the species is expected to scatter adhesive eggs over aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or among debris in shallow water, with no parental care whatsoever; adults would be expected to eat their own eggs if given access to them.
The floodplain lake and side-channel habitat — warm, structurally complex, and seasonally variable — probably supports spawning aggregations during high-water periods when such habitats expand. Given that the species is currently known only from a small number of specimens collected during the original survey, captive-husbandry and reproductive biology data remain entirely unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Enteromius yardiensis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a very recently described species (2020) known from a handful of specimens in one river system, with no known export, no captive population, and no trade presence. The information needed to set up a well-matched aquarium — precise water chemistry preferences, social behaviour in confinement, captive diet response — does not yet exist.
From the habitat data, the species requires warm water (a minimum of 79 °F at the collection sites, with the upper range reaching nearly 90 °F) and apparently prefers shallow, plant-rich, turbid conditions over a soft substrate. Any future study of this species in captivity would be primarily scientific rather than recreational.
Conservation
Enteromius yardiensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the time of writing; the species was described in 2020 and has not yet undergone evaluation. It should be considered of conservation concern by virtue of its biology: it is strictly endemic to the lower Awash River and the adjacent Lake Yardi, giving it one of the smallest ranges of any described Ethiopian cyprinid.
The Awash River faces mounting pressure from large-scale irrigation extraction, multiple dams, and water diversion for agriculture in the Afar Depression — pressures that directly reduce discharge, alter flood pulses, and shrink the floodplain lake habitats on which this species depends. The lower Awash has already experienced dramatic hydrological modification. For a species confined to the very end of this stressed river system and a single adjacent lake, range contraction poses a real extinction risk even before formal assessment is completed.
