Enteromius yeiensis was first described by Johnsen in 1926, originally placed in the genus Barbus under the combination Barbus yeiensis. The species was later transferred to the large African barb genus Enteromius as part of the broad reclassification of African cyprinids that has unfolded over recent decades. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Enteromius yeiensis (Johnsen, 1926) as the current valid combination; the parenthetical authority reflects the move out of Barbus.
Enteromius is a sprawling, polyphyletic assemblage of small African barbs placed in the subfamily Smiliogastrinae. Many species in this genus have limited published records and the group as a whole remains incompletely revised. Older databases and regional fish lists may still carry this species as Barbus yeiensis — that is a junior synonym under the current taxonomy.
Morphology
Enteromius yeiensis is a small, slim-bodied cyprinid with a maximum recorded total length of 1.5 in, typical of the many diminutive Enteromius species that inhabit African river systems. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic, suggesting it occupies both bottom and mid-water zones depending on conditions.
Detailed morphological descriptions in the accessible literature are sparse. As with most small Enteromius, the body is likely fusiform and moderately laterally compressed, with the typical cyprinid fin arrangement. Specific colour pattern, scale counts, and meristic details await a modern systematic revision of this species and its close relatives.
Habitat
The type locality of Enteromius yeiensis is the Yei River in Sudan (now South Sudan), and the species' documented distribution spans the Nile River system and the Chad basin — two of the largest freshwater catchments in Africa. Both systems encompass a wide range of environments, from permanent rivers and seasonal floodplains to savanna streams and headwater tributaries.
No detailed habitat preferences have been published for this species specifically. Given the tropical African latitude and the character of the Nile and Chad drainages, the species likely inhabits warm, slower-flowing or seasonal waters over muddy or sandy substrates, but this remains inferred rather than documented.
Feeding
No species-specific feeding studies have been published for Enteromius yeiensis. Small African barbs of the genus Enteromius are generally opportunistic omnivores, picking small invertebrates, algal films, plant fragments and organic detritus from the substrate and water column. The benthopelagic habit recorded for the species on FishBase is consistent with a bottom-associated foraging style.

By inference from barb biology generally, the species would scatter adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, roots, or gravel, with no parental care. Adults would be expected to consume their own eggs if not separated.
Reproductive details — clutch size, spawning season, development time — remain entirely undocumented for this species. Given its Data Deficient status and the remoteness of its type locality, field reproductive data are unlikely to appear in the near term.

Enteromius yeiensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and is not commercially available. Its small adult size (1.5 in TL) and African river origin would in principle make it suitable for a species aquarium or biotope display representing the Nile or Chad basin, but no husbandry data have been published.
Given the absence of any trade presence or captive records, practical recommendations cannot be made with confidence. Enthusiasts interested in African small barbs are far better served by the several Enteromius species that do appear occasionally in specialist circles and for which some husbandry experience exists.
Conservation
Enteromius yeiensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to 2019. The DD listing reflects the paucity of population data, distributional survey work, and ecological research for this species rather than confirmed threat or confirmed stability.
The Yei River and broader Nile–Chad drainage system have been subject to significant human pressures including civil conflict, agricultural water extraction, and increasing development across South Sudan and the Chad basin. Whether these pressures affect Enteromius yeiensis specifically is unknown. A targeted survey of small cyprinid diversity in the Yei River catchment would be needed before any threat status could responsibly be assigned.
