Enteromius zanzibaricus, the Zanzibar barb, is a small freshwater cyprinid described by Wilhelm Peters in 1868 from coastal East Africa. Reaching roughly 4 in in total length, it inhabits the rivers and streams of a broad band of eastern Africa — from the Somali coast south through Kenya to Mozambique — where it occupies warm, benthopelagic freshwater habitats typical of the region. Long carried in the literature under the genus Barbus as Barbus zanzibaricus, it now sits in the genus Enteromius along with most small African barbs. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with a distribution wide enough to offset localised pressures on its river systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius zanzibaricus was described by the German naturalist and explorer Wilhelm Peters in 1868. Peters was a prolific describer of African vertebrates and the species takes its epithet from the island of Zanzibar, off the Tanzanian coast — a locality that served as a staging point for much of the zoological collecting of that era even when the actual specimens came from the adjacent mainland.

For most of the twentieth century the species was carried in the literature as Barbus zanzibaricus, the genus Barbus having long been used as a broad receptacle for small Old World barbs. Later revisions of African cyprinids reorganised many of these fishes into Enteromius, and that is the combination recognised today. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Enteromius zanzibaricus (Peters, 1868), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was not originally described in Enteromius.

Morphology

Enteromius zanzibaricus is a small to medium barb, reaching a recorded maximum of 4 in total length according to FishBase. Like most members of the genus it has the streamlined, moderately compressed body typical of flowing-water African barbs — suited to life in the benthopelagic zone of rivers and streams.

Detailed colour descriptions are sparse in the available literature for this species. As with many East African Enteromius, it is presumed to display the silvery to olivaceous tones common in the group, with darker dorsal colouring and paler flanks. Morphological data beyond maximum size is not well documented in accessible sources, and a thorough morphological treatment awaits the kind of regional revision that East African small barbs generally still require.

Habitat

The Zanzibar barb occupies fresh waters across a wide stretch of eastern Africa, from the rivers of the Somali coast south through Kenya to Mozambique. FishBase characterises it as a benthopelagic, freshwater species of tropical rivers and streams.

Water chemistry in this range is notably varied. FishBase records a pH of 7.2–7.8 and a temperature span of 72–82 °F for the species — conditions consistent with the warm, broadly neutral to slightly alkaline rivers draining the savannas, coastal plains and highland edges of East Africa. These are not the soft acidic blackwaters of the Congo basin but the harder, better-buffered rivers of a geologically older and more varied region.

Feeding

Like the great majority of small Enteromius species, the Zanzibar barb is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, foraging along and near the bottom for small invertebrates, algae, plant fragments, and organic detritus. The benthopelagic habit noted by FishBase is consistent with bottom-oriented foraging, picking food from the substrate surface and the lower water column.

No detailed gut-content studies are recorded for this species in the accessible literature, and the feeding ecology is extrapolated from the broader genus and from comparable East African small barbs. In the aquarium, similarly sized Enteromius accept standard flake and small pellet foods, live and frozen invertebrates, and algae-based supplements without difficulty.

Mating

Enteromius zanzibaricus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the universal reproductive strategy of barbs. No nest is constructed, no territory is defended beyond the transient courtship chase, and no parental care is extended to either eggs or fry.

Courtship follows the typical barb pattern: a ready male drives a gravid female through vegetation or over suitable substrate, the two pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive eggs scatter and settle among plants, over gravel or among submerged debris, where they develop unattended. Adults will eat the eggs given the opportunity.

Breeding

As with other barbs of similar size and ecology, spawning in Enteromius zanzibaricus is seasonal in the wild, likely tied to rainfall patterns and the flooding of East African river systems that brings improved food availability and altered water conditions — cues that trigger many barbs to spawn.

In the aquarium, captive breeding of this species is not widely documented in the hobby literature, reflecting its limited presence in the trade. General barb husbandry principles apply: condition a pair or small group on live and varied foods; a separate, shallow spawning container with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop and a mesh base allows the scattered eggs to fall out of the adults' reach. Eggs would be expected to hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later. Adults give no parental care and should be removed after spawning.

In the aquarium

The Zanzibar barb is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and is largely absent from mainstream aquarium literature. It would be classed among the "oddity" or "species-only" acquisitions occasionally available through specialist African fish importers rather than a standard shop offering.

Care requirements inferred from its ecology are straightforward: warm water in the 72–82 °F range, a broadly neutral to mildly alkaline pH (7.2–7.8), and moderate current to reflect its riverine origins. Like most barbs it is best kept in a shoal of six or more; smaller groups produce nervous, more aggressive fish. A spacious tank with open swimming area, some planting, and robust filtration would suit it well. Diet would follow standard barb lines — quality flakes, small pellets, and regular live or frozen invertebrate foods. Given its modest maximum size of around 4 in, a tank of 20–30 US gal or more would be appropriate for a group.

Conservation

Enteromius zanzibaricus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Its range extends across a broad swath of East Africa — from Somaliland south through Kenya to Mozambique — and no major population-level decline has been documented that would warrant a threatened category.

That said, East African rivers face growing pressure from agricultural water extraction, sedimentation from deforestation and cultivation, dam construction, and water pollution, all of which affect riverine small fish communities broadly. While the Zanzibar barb's wide distribution provides a buffer against localised degradation, continued monitoring of freshwater habitats across its range remains important for the longer-term security of the East African barb fauna.
