Labeobarbus clarkeae is a large African cyprinid described by Keith Banister in 1984 from the genus Varicorhinus — a name since synonymised — and now placed in Labeobarbus, the broad genus of African yellowfish and big barbs spanning river systems from East to southern Africa. Like its relatives it is a robust, deep-bodied fish of flowing rivers, distinguished in part by characteristic papillae on the anterior edge of the lower jaw. Formal assessment of its conservation status has not been completed, and the species remains little-studied by aquarium hobbyists.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus clarkeae was described by Keith E. Banister in 1984 as Varicorhinus clarkeae, one of three new species Banister named from Africa in a revision published in the Bulletin of the British Museum of Natural History (Zoology) 47(5): 273–282. The species epithet honours Margaret Anne Clarke, a fish collection assistant at the British Museum (Natural History), who provided extensive support during Banister's taxonomic work on the genus.

Subsequent revisions transferred the species to Labeobarbus, the genus that now accommodates the large African barbs previously distributed across Varicorhinus, Barbus (in part), and related names. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Labeobarbus clarkeae (Banister, 1984), with the parenthetical authority marking the original placement in Varicorhinus. FishBase carries the species under ID 54455.

Labeobarbus belongs to the subfamily Torinae (Cyprinidae) and represents a lineage of large, laterally compressed African cyprinids — ecologically analogous to the Asian mahseers of genus Tor — that underwent considerable adaptive radiation across East and southern African river drainages.

Morphology

Labeobarbus clarkeae is a large-bodied barb with the deep, compressed form characteristic of the genus. A diagnostically useful feature noted in Banister's original description is the presence of papillae on the anterior edge of the lower jaw, which distinguishes it from closely related Labeobarbus species.

Detailed meristic data for the species are sparse in the accessible literature beyond the original description. As with other large African barbs, the body is likely silvery to brassy, with the robust build, moderate fin development, and subterminal mouth suited to picking food from the substrate of flowing water. Specific size data for the species are not well documented in secondary sources.

Habitat

Labeobarbus clarkeae is an African species whose range falls within the broader East and southern African distribution of the genus Labeobarbus. Members of this genus typically inhabit flowing rivers — from cool, oxygenated highland streams to warmer lowland river reaches — often associating with rocky substrates, riffles, and pool margins.

Labeobarbus species as a group favour near-neutral to mildly alkaline water conditions typical of African highland and savanna river systems, generally well-oxygenated with moderate to firm current. The precise basin-level distribution of L. clarkeae is not resolved in secondary literature, and more detailed habitat information awaits comprehensive field work.

Feeding

Like the majority of Labeobarbus, L. clarkeae is presumed to be an omnivore making use of aufwuchs, plant material, benthic invertebrates, and organic detritus in its riverine habitat. The papillate lower jaw is consistent with a grazing or scraping feeding mode similar to that seen in other large African barbs and yellowfish.

Specific diet studies for this species are not documented in the accessible literature. Analogues within Labeobarbus range from near-herbivores that scrape algae and biofilm from rocks to more generalist foragers that take invertebrates, seeds, and detritus according to season and availability.

Mating

Labeobarbus clarkeae, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed and no territory is maintained beyond brief courtship. During spawning a driving male pursues a gravid female through the water column or over the substrate; eggs and milt are released simultaneously, and the eggs — adhesive or semi-adhesive — settle among gravel, plant stems, or submerged structure.

Large Labeobarbus in African rivers are often seasonal spawners that undertake migratory movements to reach suitable upstream gravel beds when water temperatures and flow conditions are appropriate. Spawning aggregations can be large. Adults give no care to eggs or larvae after fertilisation.

Breeding

No aquarium breeding records for Labeobarbus clarkeae are documented in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. Given the large adult size typical of the genus and the species' apparently limited presence in the ornamental trade, captive reproduction would require substantial space and careful simulation of seasonal river conditions.

By analogy with other large Labeobarbus and African riverine barbs generally, spawning would involve broadcast scattering of eggs over gravel or rocky substrate in flowing, well-oxygenated water, with no nest construction and no parental care of any kind. Eggs and larvae would be entirely independent from the moment of fertilisation.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus clarkeae is not established as an aquarium fish and does not appear in regular ornamental trade. Most Labeobarbus species attain sizes that make them impractical for home aquaria; they are suited only to very large public display systems or purpose-built facilities.

For hobbyists interested in large African barbs, the genus offers impressive, active fish that require strong filtration, high dissolved oxygen, substantial current, and cool-to-moderate temperatures reflecting their riverine origins. A diet combining high-quality pellets, vegetable matter, and occasional live or frozen foods would be appropriate for any Labeobarbus kept in captivity.

Conservation

Labeobarbus clarkeae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). The genus Labeobarbus as a whole faces mounting pressures across its African range, including dam construction that fragments migratory routes, water abstraction, agricultural runoff, and overfishing of large cyprinids for local food markets.

Because the species' precise range and population size are not well documented, the scale of any threats it faces specifically cannot be quantified at present. Comprehensive surveys of East and southern African river fish communities — informed by molecular as well as morphological data — are needed to clarify the taxonomy, distribution, and conservation standing of L. clarkeae and many of its congeners.
