Labeobarbus alluaudi is a poorly known large barb described by Pellegrin in 1909 from the Wimi River in the lower Ruwenzori zone of eastern Africa, where it is endemic to a handful of tributaries draining into the Lake Edward system in Uganda. Its taxonomic status has been questioned in recent literature — some authorities treat it as a probable hybrid between Labeobarbus somereni and Labeobarbus ruwenzorii rather than a fully independent species — and the fish has not been reliably recorded from the wild in recent decades, raising the possibility that it may no longer survive as a distinct population. It remains a scientifically important entry in the fauna of the Albertine Rift, a region of exceptional freshwater biodiversity and severe anthropogenic pressure.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus alluaudi was formally described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1909, with syntypes deposited in the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris (MNHN 1909-0586, 0587). The type locality is the Wimi River (also rendered Wimi/Ruwenzori, lower zone), eastern Africa — a small tributary of the Lake Edward basin in what is now western Uganda.

The species has historically been placed in the broadly conceived genus Barbus, and its current placement in Labeobarbus follows the consolidation of large African barbs by ichthyologists working on the rich barb diversity of sub-Saharan river systems. FishBase carries it under accession number 11279. Its taxonomic integrity is disputed: recent treatments have suggested the original specimens and any surviving fish may represent hybrids between two co-occurring Labeobarbus species — L. somereni and L. ruwenzorii — rather than a reproductively isolated lineage. If that interpretation is upheld, alluaudi would be sunk as a synonym. The question has not been resolved by molecular work as of this writing, and the Catalog of Fishes currently retains the name as provisionally valid.

The epithet honours Charles Alluaud (1861–1949), a French entomologist and naturalist who undertook extensive collecting expeditions to eastern Africa in the early twentieth century and deposited the type material that Pellegrin examined.

Morphology

Detailed morphometric data for Labeobarbus alluaudi are sparse in the accessible literature, and the type series is small. As a member of the large-barb assemblage of the Albertine Rift river systems, it shares the general body plan of the genus: a moderately robust, laterally compressed cyprinid body with well-developed scales, a subterminal mouth adapted for bottom-associated feeding, and typically one pair of rostral and one pair of maxillary barbels. Dorsal-fin and other meristic data from the original description would be needed for a full characterisation.

Because the fish has rarely if ever been photographed or collected alive in modern surveys, no reliable live coloration is documented here. Large Labeobarbus of the Albertine Rift region generally have silvery to brassy flanks, darkening dorsally, with varying degrees of reddish suffusion on the fins — consistent with the wider genus — but these features cannot be confirmed for alluaudi without examined specimens.

Habitat

The known range of Labeobarbus alluaudi is restricted to three rivers in Uganda that drain into the Lake Edward system from the Ruwenzori massif: the Mubuku, Sibwe, and Ruimi rivers. These are highland montane streams, fed by snowmelt and equatorial rainfall off the Ruwenzori range, and they carry cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over rocky and gravelly substrates — conditions typical of large Labeobarbus that are adapted to the foothill and mid-elevation zones of the Albertine Rift.

No reliable water chemistry data (temperature, pH) have been found in accessible sources for these specific rivers. By analogy with similar Ruwenzori-drainage barbs and the altitude of the catchment, the rivers are likely cool relative to lowland African systems, with near-neutral to mildly alkaline chemistry on volcanic and metamorphic geology. Precise temperature and pH ranges must await proper hydrological surveys of the Mubuku, Sibwe, and Ruimi rivers.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies of Labeobarbus alluaudi are recorded in the accessible literature, and the species' rarity in the wild means direct observation data are lacking. The genus Labeobarbus is broadly omnivorous across its African range, with species feeding on algae, diatoms, biofilm, detritus, invertebrates, and plant matter scraped or picked from rocky substrates and sand.

Given the highland river environment — fast, clear water over cobble and gravel — alluaudi likely fed on periphyton and benthic invertebrates in a manner consistent with other rheophilic large barbs of the Rift drainage. Any characterisation beyond this general inference awaits fresh-caught specimens.

Mating

Labeobarbus alluaudi has not been studied in the wild or in captivity with respect to reproductive behaviour, but as a member of the family Cyprinidae it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the fashion universal among barbs. Large African Labeobarbus in comparable highland river systems are seasonal spawners that migrate upstream to fast, gravelly reaches when river conditions — rising temperature, rainfall, and flow — signal the spawning season.

Courtship involves active driving by males, pursuing gravid females through the current or over gravel beds, with eggs and milt broadcast together over the substrate. No territory is held beyond the act of spawning, no nest is constructed, and no pair bond persists.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Labeobarbus alluaudi has been documented, and its extreme rarity — or possible extinction — in the wild means observations of spawning in situ are also absent from the literature. Based on the biology of the genus, eggs would be adhesive or semi-adhesive, scattered over gravel substrates in fast-flowing sections of river, and left entirely without parental attention. Adults play no role after spawning and are likely to consume eggs encountered in the drift.

Larval fish would shelter among cobbles or vegetation margins in slower side channels as they grow, gradually moving into the faster reaches of the Ruwenzori rivers as juveniles. Whether any population capable of reproduction still persists in the Mubuku, Sibwe, or Ruimi rivers is unknown.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus alluaudi is not available in the aquarium trade and there is no record of it being maintained in captivity. Even if specimens could be obtained, any attempt to keep the species would need to account for its montane river origins — cool, fast, highly oxygenated water being essential for fish from the Ruwenzori highland zone.

Given its disputed taxonomic status and the possibility that it represents a hybrid lineage rather than a reproductively distinct species, the fish is of specialist scientific rather than mainstream hobby interest. It is noted here for completeness of the Labeobarbus fauna of the Albertine Rift.

Conservation

Labeobarbus alluaudi has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List. Its known range is exceptionally narrow — three rivers in the Ruwenzori highlands of Uganda — and it has not been reliably recorded in recent ichthyological surveys of the Lake Edward basin. The combination of very restricted range, potential hybrid status (which raises questions about whether a discrete population exists at all), and absence from modern collections suggests the fish is either extremely rare or functionally extinct in the wild.

The Ruwenzori drainage rivers face mounting pressure from agriculture, small-scale gold mining, deforestation on the lower slopes, and water extraction for irrigation in the Kasese district and surrounding areas. The Albertine Rift is globally recognised as a freshwater biodiversity hotspot, but many of its small-range endemic barbs and cichlids have received no systematic population survey. Until targeted surveys are conducted for alluaudi in the Mubuku, Sibwe, and Ruimi rivers, its survival status will remain uncertain.
