Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus altipinnis was originally described by Banister and Poll in 1973 as Varicorhinus altipinnis, the type locality lying within the Lufira River system of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The parenthetical authority in the current combination — (Banister & Poll, 1973) — reflects the subsequent transfer from Varicorhinus to Labeobarbus, which occurred around 2010 following mitochondrial DNA analysis that collapsed Varicorhinus into the synonymy of Labeobarbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Labeobarbus altipinnis as the valid combination.
The middle Lufira basin is recognised as an extraordinary hotspot for this genus: a single MDPI diversity study documented 76 Labeobarbus species from the middle Lufira alone, making it one of the most species-rich single river reaches for the genus anywhere on the continent. Sorting the species limits and relationships within this complex remains an active area of ichthyological research, and the standing of several local forms may be revised as sampling and molecular coverage improve.
Morphology
As implied by its specific epithet — altus (Latin: high) + pinna (fin) — the most immediately conspicuous feature of Labeobarbus altipinnis is its elevated dorsal fin, taller in proportion to body depth than in many close relatives and serving as the primary visual character separating it from sympatric congeners. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 13.5 in (male or unsexed), placing it firmly in the "large barb" category within a genus that ranges from modest-sized stream fish to robust, powerful river species.
Beyond the high dorsal, the species has the sturdy, somewhat fusiform body typical of large African Labeobarbus: a subterminal mouth fitted for grazing hard substrates, well-developed barbels, and a moderately forked tail. Detailed scale counts and meristic data were not captured in the available sources, and published descriptions of live colouration for this species are sparse in the accessible literature.
Habitat
Labeobarbus altipinnis is restricted to the Lufira River system, which drains an elevated plateau in Katanga Province, DRC, before joining the upper Lualaba — itself the headwater of the Congo River. The middle Lufira passes through rugged terrain characterised by rocky rapids and falls; published habitat notes place the species in rocky habitats below waterfalls, a benthopelagic microhabitat consistent with the substrate-grazing lifestyle seen in many large Labeobarbus.
Kundelungu National Park encompasses much of the middle Lufira River valley, providing formal protection to a substantial portion of the species' range. Water in the upper Congo system at these elevations is generally cool and well oxygenated relative to the vast lowland Congo basin, with clear to lightly turbid conditions typical of rocky highland rivers. Precise temperature and chemistry records for the Lufira at this locality were not available in the reviewed sources.
Feeding
Labeobarbus altipinnis is presumed to be a benthic omnivore consistent with the generalist feeding ecology documented across the genus. Large African Labeobarbus typically exploit a mixed diet that includes algae and biofilm scraped from rock surfaces, submerged plant material, benthic invertebrates, and organic detritus. The subterminal mouth morphology and robust body of the species are consistent with grazing exposed rock substrates in the fast-flowing, rocky habitats where it occurs.

Many large river-dwelling Labeobarbus undertake seasonal migrations tied to rainfall and river level, moving upstream or into flooded marginal habitats to spawn on gravel beds when conditions are right. Whether L. altipinnis exhibits such migratory behaviour within the Lufira system is not documented in the available literature, though the Lufira's strongly seasonal hydrology makes spawning migrations plausible.
Breeding
Reproductive details for Labeobarbus altipinnis in the wild are not well documented in the accessible literature. Based on the pattern established across large African Labeobarbus, spawning is likely seasonal and linked to the rains — a broadcast-spawning event over gravel or coarse substrate in running water, producing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that settle into the interstices and receive no parental attention whatsoever. Adults are likely to consume eggs given the opportunity, as is typical of the group.
The species is not recorded in the ornamental trade and has not been bred in captivity to the authors' knowledge. Captive breeding would require replicating the cool, well-oxygenated, high-flow conditions of its native rocky rapids habitat — a significant husbandry challenge that places it well outside the scope of routine aquarium keeping.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus altipinnis is effectively absent from the aquarium trade and is not a practical aquarium fish. At a maximum standard length approaching 13.5 in, it falls into the size range that demands very large aquaria even for single specimens, and its adaptation to fast-flowing, highly oxygenated rocky river habitat is difficult to replicate in a closed system. Aquarists interested in large African cyprinids are served by a handful of more tractable species from other genera; L. altipinnis is of primary interest to ichthyologists, conservationists, and specialists working on the remarkable Lufira–Congo ichthyofauna rather than to the hobbyist market.

Labeobarbus altipinnis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to February 2009. The species' presence within Kundelungu National Park — which protects a large portion of the middle Lufira River valley — provides meaningful habitat protection across part of its restricted range.
Nonetheless, the Lufira basin faces pressures from mining activity in the Katanga copper belt, associated water pollution, and ongoing land-use change across the region. The extraordinary biodiversity of the middle Lufira — home to at least 76 Labeobarbus species according to recent survey work — means that any basin-wide degradation carries disproportionate conservation consequences for the genus as a whole. The 2009 assessment predates much of the modern molecular and survey work on the Lufira ichthyofauna, and a re-evaluation informed by current distributional data and the documented species richness of the system would be valuable.
