Labeobarbus gestetneri is a large African cyprinid of the Upper Congo Basin, described by Banister and Bailey in 1979 from the Zaire River system and placed in the yellowfish genus Labeobarbus. Known from the Luhoho basin and surrounding drainages of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, it belongs to the subfamily Torinae and is thought to share the migratory, river-dwelling habits typical of big African barbs. The species is assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, reflecting a narrow known range and a lack of systematic survey work in an ichthyologically complex basin.

Labeobarbus gestetneri was originally described as Barbus gestetneri by Banister and Bailey in 1979, based on material collected during an expedition to the Zaire River (now the Congo River system) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Labeobarbus gestetneri (Banister & Bailey, 1979), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of the original genus Barbus to the yellowfish genus Labeobarbus. The species belongs to the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Torinae.

Labeobarbus is a large, predominantly African genus that includes the southern African yellowfishes and a number of medium-to-large river barbs across the continent. The Congo Basin holds a distinctive ichthyofauna, and gestetneri is one of several Labeobarbus recognised from the Upper Congo and its tributaries. Older literature may list the species as Barbus gestetneri; the placement in Labeobarbus reflects contemporary generic revisions.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum size of 6.5 in standard length for Labeobarbus gestetneri, putting it in the medium-to-large range for an African river barb. Like other members of Labeobarbus it is a robust, fusiform cyprinid built for life in flowing water, with the somewhat subterminal to inferior mouth position typical of the genus — adapted to grazing over substrate surfaces rather than surface feeding.

Habitat

Large Labeobarbus in African rivers typically occupy main-channel and tributary habitats with moderate to strong currents, firm substrates of gravel, sand, or rock, and well-oxygenated water.

Specific water-chemistry data for this species are not recorded in the available literature, but the Upper Congo's highland and mid-altitude tributaries generally support cool to moderately warm, clear to lightly turbid water. African yellowfishes are often associated with rocky or gravelly runs and riffles where they can feed along the benthos and undertake seasonal upstream migrations.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Labeobarbus gestetneri has been documented in the hobby or scientific literature. Large African barbs of this kind are seldom maintained in aquaria, and the logistics of replicating migratory cues, the required tank volume, and the lack of trade availability make captive reproduction unlikely in standard aquarium settings.

In the wild, breeding is expected to follow the pattern of related species: seasonal spawning runs timed to flood pulses, with eggs scattered over gravel in flowing water. Fry are entirely independent from the moment of hatching, receiving no parental investment beyond the gametes themselves. Growth rates for wild juveniles are not recorded for this species.

Any display of the species would best focus on its river-barb ecology and the conservation challenges facing the Congo ichthyofauna.

The Data Deficient designation reflects a genuine lack of population data rather than a confident determination of low risk: the species has a restricted known range in the Upper Congo Basin and has not been the subject of systematic population surveys.

The Democratic Republic of Congo harbours extraordinary freshwater biodiversity but also faces serious pressures from artisanal and subsistence fishing, habitat degradation from mining activities, deforestation, and disruption of river flows. Many Congo Basin endemics are likely declining without the survey infrastructure to document it. For gestetneri, as for much of the Upper Congo ichthyofauna, the priority conservation need is basic inventory work — establishing where the species occurs, how abundant it is, and what threatens it locally.
