Labeobarbus gorgorensis was described by the Italian ichthyologist Giorgio Bini in 1940, originally under the genus Barbus. The parenthetical authority in the current combination — (Bini, 1940) — signals that the species has since been moved into Labeobarbus, the valid genus for the large African barbs and yellowfish recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).
The Lake Tana Labeobarbus assemblage is one of the best-documented African cyprinid species flocks. Fifteen species or ecomorphs are currently recognised within the lake, with relationships inferred from morphology and genetics. Because Bini described several of these forms from relatively superficial museum specimens, the boundaries between some taxa have been debated, and molecular work has periodically revised the count. L. gorgorensis is treated here as a valid species following the Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Detailed morphometric data for L. gorgorensis specifically are sparse in the accessible literature. As a member of the Lake Tana Labeobarbus flock, it is a large, robust cyprinid with the elongated, slightly fusiform body typical of rheophilic African barbs — built for sustained movement in both open lake water and flowing tributary rivers during spawning migrations. The genus as a whole reaches up to roughly 1 metre in total length in its largest representatives, though individual species vary considerably.

The ecological and scientific interest of L. gorgorensis lies in what it represents as a member of the Lake Tana species flock — a natural experiment in rapid cichlid-style radiation within a cyprinid lineage — rather than in any aquarium application. Those interested in large African barbs as a group will find more accessible analogues in the yellowfish (L. kimberleyensis and relatives) of southern Africa, though these too are rarely traded.
Conservation
Labeobarbus gorgorensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, a status that reflects the absence of robust population data rather than any inference of security. The Lake Tana Labeobarbus flock as a whole faces a convergence of threats that have already reduced catches of multiple species substantially: overfishing by artisanal and commercial fisheries targeting spawning aggregations in the tributaries, habitat degradation from watershed erosion and sedimentation, obstruction of spawning rivers by small dams and irrigation diversions, and eutrophication driven by agricultural runoff across the intensively farmed Tana basin.
Conservation of L. gorgorensis is inseparable from the broader management of Lake Tana and its catchment. The lake is designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and Ethiopia has established some protections for the tributary spawning rivers, but enforcement and upstream land-use pressures remain challenging.
