Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus microterolepis was formally described by the Belgian ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1902, with the type locality given as the Maki River, which drains into Lake Ziway (also written Zwai) in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. The parenthetical authority in the current valid combination — (Boulenger, 1902) — indicates that Boulenger originally placed the species in a different genus and that it was subsequently transferred to Labeobarbus.
The species sits within the African hexaploid clade of the family Cyprinidae, a speciose lineage containing more than 130 recognised species across sub-Saharan Africa, including the large yellowfish and labeo-barbs that dominate many major river systems. The genus Labeobarbus has historically been treated inconsistently, and some African members were formerly referred to Barbus, the catch-all genus that governed African and Eurasian cyprinids before systematic revision.
The taxonomic standing of L. microterolepis is itself in question. FishBase records a note that the original specimen could be an abnormal individual of Barbus intermedius — a widespread and variable Ethiopian large barb — or a hybrid resulting from interbreeding between B. ethiopicus (a Lake Ziway endemic) and B. intermedius. Until fresh material is examined using modern morphological and genetic methods, the species remains a provisional entry in the African cyprinid fauna.
Morphology
Morphological data for Labeobarbus microterolepis are sparse, as the species is known primarily from its type specimen. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4.5 in for an unsexed or male individual — a relatively modest size for the Labeobarbus lineage, whose members range from small riverine forms to large mahseer-like fish exceeding 23.5 in.
The species epithet microterolepis derives from Greek and refers to fine or small scales, which likely reflects a diagnostic character noticed by Boulenger in the original description. Beyond this scale detail and the basic cyprinid body plan — a fusiform, laterally compressed body with a subterminal or terminal mouth suited to benthic and water-column feeding — no detailed published morphological account is available in accessible literature.
Habitat
The type locality of Labeobarbus microterolepis is the Maki River, a tributary system associated with Lake Ziway in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. Lake Ziway is a shallow, warm freshwater lake at approximately 1,2087 ft elevation, fed by the Ketar and Maki rivers and drained southward into the Bulbulo River toward Lake Langano. The lake and its tributaries support a diverse endemic and endemic-rich fish fauna, including several Labeobarbus species.
Based on its FishBase classification as benthopelagic and tropical, L. microterolepis is presumed to occupy the water column near the bottom of river channels or lake margins in the Ziway catchment. Research on Ethiopian Rift Valley Labeobarbus species more broadly has found that they use floodplains and river tributaries as breeding habitats, retreating to deeper lake or main-channel waters outside the spawning season. Whether L. microterolepis still occurs in the Ziway basin is uncertain; some recent surveys of the lake have not documented it, and the species may be genuinely rare or locally extinct.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Labeobarbus microterolepis a trophic level of 3.1, placing it as a low-level predator or omnivore feeding primarily on invertebrates, plant material, and detritus — a feeding guild consistent with the benthopelagic lifestyle inferred from its classification. Large African barbs in the Labeobarbus lineage are generalist consumers, taking aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, algae, and organic bottom material depending on season and habitat availability.
No direct gut-content analyses or field feeding observations have been published for this species specifically. Its modest size (under 4.5 in SL) and likely benthic tendencies suggest it forages close to the substrate in river channels and lake shallows, taking small invertebrates and perhaps algal films from rocks and sediment surfaces.
Mating
No behavioural observations of courtship or mating in Labeobarbus microterolepis have been published. Based on the biology of the broader Labeobarbus lineage and of large African barbs generally, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no parental investment beyond the act of broadcasting gametes.
In related Ethiopian Labeobarbus species, spawning migrations from main lake waters into river tributaries and floodplain areas are well documented, typically triggered by seasonal rainfall and rising water levels. A driving male pursues a gravid female through shallow water or among submerged vegetation, and eggs and milt are released together without nest-building or any subsequent guarding of eggs or larvae.
Breeding
Labeobarbus microterolepis has not been bred in captivity, and its reproductive biology has not been studied directly in the wild. By analogy with other members of the African Labeobarbus hexaploid clade studied in Lake Tana, the Awash system, and other Ethiopian catchments, the species almost certainly scatters adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel, roots, or aquatic vegetation in flowing water, with spawning concentrated during or after seasonal flood pulses.
Eggs receive no parental care after deposition. Larvae develop in the drift or among sheltered substrate features before recruiting to juvenile feeding areas. The low fishing vulnerability score recorded in FishBase (consistent with a small, non-commercially targeted species) suggests the species is not heavily exploited by artisanal fisheries, though this inference must be treated cautiously given the general data deficiency surrounding it.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus microterolepis has no documented presence in the aquarium hobby. Its small maximum size of under 4.5 in SL would, in principle, make it more manageable than the largest African yellowfish, but the species' rarity, uncertain taxonomy, and restricted type locality in an area not systematically targeted by ornamental fish collectors mean it has never entered the trade in any meaningful way.
If encountered, care requirements would logically parallel those of other medium-sized African Labeobarbus species: a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with good water movement, moderate temperatures consistent with the elevated Ethiopian Rift Valley habitat (likely around 64–75 °F), and a mixed diet of quality pellets supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates. The species is not available commercially, and keeping it would carry significant ethical and regulatory considerations given its Data Deficient conservation status and limited known distribution.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Labeobarbus microterolepis in May 2009 and assigned the status Data Deficient (DD), reflecting the inability to determine the species' risk of extinction in the absence of adequate data on its distribution, population size, and trends. The assessment was based on a single known specimen from a restricted type locality and the absence of reliable subsequent records.
Lake Ziway and the Maki River catchment face multiple anthropogenic pressures: agricultural water extraction for horticultural irrigation on the shores of the lake, pesticide and fertiliser runoff, sedimentation from deforestation in the catchment, and the spread of invasive macrophytes. These pressures have altered water quality and littoral habitat in the lake over recent decades. If L. microterolepis is a valid species and restricted to this basin, any combination of these threats could pose a serious risk to a small, localised population — but a formal reassessment awaits better baseline survey data.
