The species is known from the Blackwater, Menge, Mungo, and Sanaga river basins — a modest range that, combined with ongoing pressures on Cameroonian freshwater habitats, has placed it on the IUCN Red List as Endangered. The species is placed in the genus Labeobarbus, a large and taxonomically complex African genus that encompasses many of the continent's biggest riverine cyprinids — historically grouped under the broader catch-all genus Barbus before that name was progressively restricted and the African large-barb fauna redistributed.
