Labeobarbus nelspruitensis, the Incomati chiselmouth, is a medium-sized African cyprinid endemic to the cool, rocky escarpment streams of the Inkomati and Pongolo river systems in South Africa and Mozambique. Reaching around 12.5 in, it schools in fast-flowing oxygenated water at subtropical latitudes between roughly 23°S and 27°S, scraping aufwuchs and picking invertebrates from rock surfaces with its chisel-like mouth. Long placed in the broad catch-all genus Barbus, it is now carried under Labeobarbus in the current literature. The species epithet nelspruitensis references Nelspruit (now Mbombela), the city near the Inkomati system in Mpumalanga, South Africa, where the species was first collected or described.

For most of the twentieth century the species was placed in the wide-net genus Barbus, and scientific literature still often cites it as Barbus nelspruitensis. The current valid combination is Labeobarbus nelspruitensis, as recognised in contemporary African ichthyology and reflected in FishBase. Morphology

Feeding

The primary threats identified in the IUCN assessment are sedimentation, reduced water quality from forestry and agricultural runoff, and invasion of its rocky stream habitats by alien fish species.
