Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus platystomus was described by Paul Pappenheim in 1914 from material collected in the upper Baro River, Ethiopia. The original combination was Barbus platystomus (Pappenheim, 1914), under which it was carried in the literature for most of the twentieth century. A revision by Tshibwabwa (2014) transferred the species to Labeobarbus, the genus now used for the large African barbs — a group that includes the yellowfishes of southern Africa and the big-river barbs of East Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Labeobarbus platystomus (Pappenheim, 1914) as the valid combination; the parenthetical authority indicates that the species was moved out of its original genus.
The specific epithet platystomus is from Greek platys (broad, flat) and stoma (mouth), referring to the wide, flattened mouth characteristic of this species. Within the genus Labeobarbus, L. platystomus belongs to the broad assemblage of East African highland barbs; its systematic relationships within the genus await detailed molecular study.
Morphology
Labeobarbus platystomus is a moderately large barb reaching approximately 7–9.5 in standard length. The body is elongate and fusiform, well-suited to life in fast current, with the firm musculature and streamlined profile typical of riverine Labeobarbus species. The mouth is wide and flattened — the feature commemorated in the species epithet — and is positioned to scrape aufwuchs and organic material from hard substrates.
Coloration in life is not well documented from the literature; as with many large African barbs, the flanks are likely silvery to brassy with darker scale margins, and breeding males may develop intensified pigmentation or spawning tubercles on the snout. Scale counts and meristic data follow the original description; detailed published morphometrics remain sparse for this species.
Habitat
The species is native to cool, fast-flowing highland rivers in Ethiopia and Kenya, with the type locality in the upper Baro River system of Ethiopia. It occupies rocky stretches characterised by strong current, high dissolved oxygen, and a substrate of cobbles and boulders — the typical habitat of rheophilic African barbs at altitude.
Water chemistry in these highland systems is near-neutral to slightly acidic (pH approximately 6.5–7.5) and of soft to moderate hardness (roughly 4–8 dGH). Temperatures run between about 18 and 75 °F, significantly cooler than the lowland rift-floor lakes and rivers. The species is associated with Rift Valley tributary drainages, where upland catchments deliver clean, oxygenated water year-round.
Feeding
Labeobarbus platystomus is an omnivore that exploits the full range of food available on and around rocky substrates in its highland river habitat. The broad, flattened mouth is well adapted for scraping algae and periphyton from rocks, and the species also takes plant matter, small invertebrates, and organic detritus in the manner typical of large rheophilic African barbs.
In common with other Labeobarbus, it is likely an opportunist that shifts its diet seasonally and with local food availability — grazing aufwuchs during dry periods and taking more invertebrate prey when river spates flush terrestrial insects and drifting material into the current.
Mating
Like all barbs, Labeobarbus platystomus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no parental care. Large riverine Labeobarbus species are broadcast spawners; adults congregate at suitable gravel reaches — typically during the onset of rains when water temperature and flow conditions are optimal — where driving males pursue gravid females and pairs or trios release eggs and milt simultaneously over the substrate.
No pair bond is formed, and spawning adults disperse after the event. Fertilised eggs settle among gravel interstices where current velocity and interstitial water flow provide oxygenation; the adults take no further part in reproduction. Spawning migrations of varying distance are typical for large Labeobarbus in East African river systems.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Labeobarbus platystomus has not been documented in the available literature, and the species does not appear to be established in the hobby. By analogy with other large Labeobarbus and riverine African barbs, successful reproduction would require large volumes of well-oxygenated, cool, flowing water — conditions that approximate the cool highland rivers of its native range.
Eggs are scattered over gravel with no parental care; adults readily consume eggs given the opportunity, so separation after spawning would be necessary. The species' size and its requirement for cool, highly oxygenated conditions make it a challenging subject for most home aquaria, and captive breeding records, if any exist, have not reached the published literature.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus platystomus is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely, if ever, encountered in the hobby. Its size — potentially 9.5 in standard length — and its requirement for cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water with a rocky substrate place it outside the practical reach of most home aquaria. Aquaria housing the species would need strong filtration and circulation, cooler temperatures (64–75 °F), and spacious quarters suited to an active, moderately large cyprinid.
For keepers with appropriate facilities — large, cool aquaria with strong flow — the species could be maintained with robust, cool-water companions of similar temperament. Its dietary needs are undemanding; the species would accept vegetable-based prepared foods alongside live and frozen invertebrates. Its primary interest is as a representative of the overlooked East African highland barb fauna rather than as a mainstream hobby species.
Conservation
Labeobarbus platystomus is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Earlier secondary accounts, drawing on FishBase, had suggested a status of Least Concern, but the current Red List assessment places the species in the highest category of extinction risk short of extinction itself.
The highland river systems of Ethiopia and Kenya face well-documented pressures from agricultural expansion, water extraction for irrigation, and the downstream effects of highland deforestation — all of which affect water quality, flow regime, and the rocky substrates on which rheophilic barbs depend. Whether these specific pressures account for the severity of the current listing is not established here; what is confirmed is the Critically Endangered status itself. As a poorly studied species with a patchy distribution tied to intact highland catchments, L. platystomus urgently needs targeted surveys to document its current range and population status, together with conservation of the upland watersheds on which its habitat depends.
