Labeobarbus progenys was described by Boulenger in 1903 and is recorded as a valid species under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names in ichthyology. The specific epithet progenys is interpreted as referring to the projecting lower jaw — a prognathous condition characteristic of several large African barbs that feed by rooting along the substrate. The parenthetical authority notation reflects that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Labeobarbus.
The genus Labeobarbus belongs to the subfamily Torinae, the same broad grouping that includes the Asian mahseers (genus Tor). Within Africa, Labeobarbus represents the radiation of large-bodied, riverine barbs commonly called yellowfish or large African barbs. No subspecies or distinct population-level variants are formally recognised for this species under the Catalog of Fishes. Were the species to become available, it would require a large aquarium of several hundred litres, strong filtration and circulation, a neutral to mildly alkaline pH consistent with its Central African river habitat, and robust, similarly sized tankmates.
