Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus rosae was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1910. The original description placed it in the genus Barbus, and the species has also appeared in the literature under the combination Barbus rosae Boulenger, 1910. The current valid genus, Labeobarbus, brings together the large African river barbs — often called yellowfish — that were formerly scattered across the old, polyphyletic Barbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination Labeobarbus rosae (Boulenger, 1910), with the parenthetical authority indicating the transfer out of Boulenger's original genus.
Within Labeobarbus the species belongs to a diverse African radiation. The genus spans large, fast-river fishes from highland streams to warmer lowland rivers across sub-Saharan Africa. Labeobarbus rosae is known only from the type series, and no subsequent revision or systematic treatment has added meaningful new material; it remains one of the least-studied members of the genus.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 3.5 in for Labeobarbus rosae — small by the standards of a genus that elsewhere produces fish of 19.5 in or more. Beyond this size datum and its placement in the large-barb lineage, detailed morphological descriptions are not available in the accessible literature.
As a Labeobarbus it would be expected to share the family's general plan: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a subterminal or inferior mouth adapted for bottom-feeding, and the characteristic cyprinid arrangement of pharyngeal teeth. The coloration and exact fin configuration are not described in the sources consulted here.
Habitat
The type locality is the Lucalla River, a tributary of the Cuanza (Kwanza) River in Angola. The Cuanza is one of Angola's major river systems, draining highland plateau terrain before flowing westward to the Atlantic. Whether the species is restricted to the Lucalla or occurs more widely in the Cuanza basin is unknown; the IUCN assessment records the distribution as uncertain.
No water-chemistry or temperature data specific to Labeobarbus rosae have been published. Angolan highland and escarpment rivers in this region are generally clear, moderately fast-flowing, and characterised by rocky and sandy substrates. The climate of the Cuanza catchment produces a distinct wet and dry season, and African river barbs in comparable drainages are often associated with seasonal shifts in water level.
Feeding
No feeding data specific to Labeobarbus rosae have been published. Large African Labeobarbus are broadly omnivorous, foraging along the substrate for algae, plant matter, invertebrates, and organic detritus. The inferior-to-subterminal mouth typical of the genus suits grazing on rocky and sandy river bottoms.
Given the near-complete absence of ecological data for this species, any more specific characterisation of its diet would be speculative.
Mating
Labeobarbus rosae has not been observed or studied in the wild or in captivity, so direct accounts of its mating behaviour are unavailable. All members of the family Cyprinidae — and Labeobarbus without exception — are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners. There is no nest, no pair bond beyond the spawning act, and no parental care of any kind.
In large African river barbs, courtship typically involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through the water column or along the substrate, with eggs and milt released together in a brief embrace. Many species in comparable river systems undertake seasonal upstream migrations tied to rainfall and flood pulses, concentrating at spawning aggregations before dispersing.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Labeobarbus rosae are known. As a cyprinid it would scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over the substrate — gravel, rock, or coarse sand — with no parental attendance. Eggs would be abandoned immediately after fertilisation, and adults may consume them given the opportunity.
Large African river barbs in related genera typically spawn during the wet season when water levels rise and temperatures shift, using floodplain margins, submerged vegetation, or gravel riffles as spawning grounds. Whether L. rosae follows this general pattern is unknown.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus rosae does not appear in the aquarium hobby and is not available in the trade. It is known only from the scientific type collection and has never been exported or maintained in captivity as far as published records indicate.
For hobbyists interested in large African Labeobarbus, other members of the genus from South and East Africa — such as the yellowfish species — occasionally appear in specialist collections, though they require large aquaria with strong filtration and good oxygenation to reflect their river origins.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List classifies Labeobarbus rosae as Data Deficient, reflecting that too little is known about its distribution, population size, or ecological requirements to make a meaningful assessment of extinction risk. The assessment cites the Cuanza basin of Angola as its range; whether it is genuinely endemic to the Lucalla River or present more broadly in the drainage is unresolved.
Angola's freshwater systems have been subject to decades of limited scientific survey, partly as a consequence of prolonged civil conflict that ended in 2002, and a number of the country's endemic fishes remain known only from historical type specimens. For Labeobarbus rosae the immediate conservation priority is basic field survey work to establish whether viable populations persist and, if so, their extent and the pressures they face. Potential threats in the Cuanza basin include subsistence and commercial fishing, water extraction for agriculture, and the expansion of hydroelectric infrastructure on Angolan rivers.
