Labeobarbus ruandae is a medium-sized African yellowfish described by Pappenheim in 1914 from the highland river system draining into Rwanda and Burundi. Reaching about 10 in in standard length, it belongs to the large and speciose African Labeobarbus assemblage — the yellowfishes and large barbs of sub-Saharan rivers — and is confined to the upper Akagera drainage in the Great Lakes region of east-central Africa. The species is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, with introduced fish cited as a primary threat to populations in lakes within its range.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus ruandae was described by the German ichthyologist Paul Pappenheim in 1914. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid combination as Labeobarbus ruandae (Pappenheim, 1914), with the parenthetical authority reflecting its original placement in a different genus before transfer to Labeobarbus.

The genus Labeobarbus encompasses the African yellowfishes and large barbs — a diverse group of cyprinids distributed across sub-Saharan river systems from the Cape drainages northward into the Great Rift Valley and its affluents. The epithet ruandae is a Latinised genitive of Rwanda, the country from which the type material was collected. The species is sometimes referred to informally as the Rwanda barb or Rwandan yellowfish in the scientific literature, though no widely used vernacular name has been formally established in the hobby trade.

Morphology

Labeobarbus ruandae is a moderately large barb, reaching a recorded maximum of 10.5 in standard length (SL) per FishBase. Like other members of the yellowfish assemblage, it has the deep-bodied, laterally compressed shape characteristic of large riverine cyprinids — a build suited to fast-flowing and mid-water life in highland watercourses.

The genus Labeobarbus is named in part for a labeo-like fleshy snout region. The coloration of L. ruandae in life is not well documented in accessible hobbyist literature, but the yellowfishes as a group are typically silvery to brassy or golden on the flanks with pale undersides, the fins often carrying yellow or orange hues. Sexual dimorphism in this species has not been described in detail in the available sources; females of large barbs are generally deeper-bodied and rounder when gravid.

Habitat

Labeobarbus ruandae is native to the upper Akagera system — the highland river network draining the Rwanda–Burundi plateau eastward into Lake Victoria via the Akagera (Kagera) River. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic freshwater species of tropical highland rivers.

The upper Akagera basin comprises a mix of fast-flowing highland streams, slower lowland reaches, and associated lakes including Lake Luhondo in northern Rwanda. At these elevations, waters tend to be cool to moderate in temperature, well-oxygenated, and near-neutral in pH, reflecting the volcanic and highland geology of the region. The species' association with both riverine and lacustrine habitats within its narrow range is significant: the extinction or sharp reduction of lake populations through introductions illustrates how vulnerable localised barbs can be to habitat-level changes.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Labeobarbus ruandae has been published in the accessible literature. Large African yellowfishes as a group are generalist omnivores, taking invertebrates, algae, periphyton, plant material and detritus from the substrate and water column. Many species of Labeobarbus are reported to browse algal mats on rocks and pick through leaf litter and sandy beds for invertebrate prey.

Given the highland riverine and lacustrine habitats of L. ruandae, a diet centred on benthic invertebrates, algal growth on rocky substrates, and seasonally available terrestrial insects and organic matter is likely. More data from field collections within the Akagera system would be needed to characterise the diet precisely.

Mating

Like all barbs, Labeobarbus ruandae is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No parental bond is formed, no nest is constructed, and no territory beyond a brief courtship area is defended. In large riverine Labeobarbus species, spawning is typically seasonal and often tied to rainfall and rising water levels that flood marginal vegetation and gravel beds.

Courtship in large African barbs follows the typical cyprinid pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female over substrate or through vegetation, the two pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle among stones, gravel or plant roots with no further attention from either parent. Adults may consume eggs encountered after spawning.

Breeding

Labeobarbus ruandae has not been bred in captivity in any documented hobbyist account, and no detailed spawning data are available for the species. The biology of closely related large yellowfishes suggests that L. ruandae would be a seasonal broadcast spawner, likely requiring a temperature or flow trigger linked to the Rwandan highland rainy seasons to initiate reproductive behaviour.

Eggs are scattered over gravel or vegetation and receive no parental care; adults should be considered capable of consuming eggs given the opportunity. The combination of a restricted natural range, low captive population, and absence of trade demand means that ex-situ breeding efforts for this species have not been reported.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus ruandae is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the international ornamental trade. Its relatively large size — potentially exceeding 10 in — would require a substantial aquarium even if specimens were available. As a highland African barb, it would logically prefer well-oxygenated, moderately cool, near-neutral water, robust filtration, and open swimming space.

For the specialist keeper of large African cyprinids, the species would in principle be accommodated similarly to other Labeobarbus from highland river systems: high flow rates, clean water, and avoidance of warm stagnant conditions. The practical absence of captive stock and the species' conservation status make acquisition unlikely outside institutional settings.

Conservation

Labeobarbus ruandae is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted in November 2015. The primary documented threat is the introduction of non-native fish into waters within the species' limited range. FishBase notes that populations in Lake Luhondo (northern Rwanda) have been decimated or extirpated by introduced tilapia and Haplochromis species, which compete for resources and alter the lake ecosystem.

The species is endemic to the upper Akagera system, a geographically restricted drainage shared between Rwanda and Burundi. This narrow range, combined with pressures from introduced fish, habitat alteration, and the broader degradation of Great Lakes region freshwater habitats — including wetland drainage, sedimentation from agricultural expansion, and pollution — places it in a precarious position. No specific conservation measures targeting L. ruandae have been documented in accessible literature, and the species does not appear in the aquarium trade in any meaningful volume that would support captive-assurance populations.
