Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi, Sharpey's barb, is a large, robustly built cyprinid endemic to the Tigris River system of Iraq and south-eastern Turkey — one of the few barbs native to the rivers of ancient Mesopotamia. Described by the British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1874 under the name Barbus sharpeyi, it was later placed in the monotypic genus Mesopotamichthys, which the Catalog of Fishes recognises as distinct from the broadly distributed Old World genus Barbus. It inhabits the main channels and tributary rivers of the Tigris basin, where it is an important component of local freshwater fisheries. Outside a small community of Iraqi fisheries biologists and specialist aquarists, the species is virtually undocumented in the Western hobby literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi was first described by Albert Günther of the British Museum in 1874, based on material from the Tigris River, under the original combination Barbus sharpeyi. The species epithet honours William Sharpey, the Scottish physiologist who was Günther's colleague and a Fellow of the Royal Society. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi (Günther, 1874), placing it in the monotypic genus Mesopotamichthys — the parenthetical authority indicating the move from Günther's original genus Barbus.

Mesopotamichthys is recognised as a distinct genus within the family Cyprinidae, separate from both the European barbels (Barbus sensu stricto) and the broadly distributed western Palearctic genus Luciobarbus. Its placement reflects the biogeographic distinctiveness of the Tigris–Euphrates river system, which has produced a freshwater fish fauna with several endemic genera. Older and regional literature may refer to this species as Barbus sharpeyi; that combination is no longer current under the Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi is a large barb with the elongated, fusiform body plan typical of rheophilic cyprinids from major river systems. Like many members of this ecological guild it possesses a robust, moderately compressed body, a subterminal or inferior mouth suited to bottom-feeding, and well-developed barbels — two pairs, as is characteristic of the broader barb lineage — enabling detection of food on the river bed.

Detailed morphometric data for the species in the Western scientific literature is sparse. It belongs to the suite of large barbs that serve as important food fish in their native regions, suggesting it reaches a substantial adult size. The species' colouration in life is not well documented in accessible sources; like many river barbs of the Tigris–Euphrates it is likely silvery to olive-bronze on the flanks with lighter underparts, lacking the bold markings of smaller ornamental barbs.

Habitat

Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi is endemic to the Tigris River system, with records from Iraq and the border region of south-eastern Turkey. It inhabits the flowing waters of the main Tigris channel and its tributaries — temperate to warm, well-oxygenated rivers typical of the Fertile Crescent's freshwater network. The Tigris and its tributaries drain limestone and alluvial terrain, producing waters that are generally neutral to alkaline and moderately to hard in mineral content, with seasonal temperature fluctuations driven by the region's continental climate.

As a large riverine barb, the species is associated with faster-flowing sections of larger rivers rather than still or sluggish waters, though the full details of its microhabitat preferences remain poorly described in the accessible literature. The Tigris basin is subject to pronounced seasonal variation in flow, and the species' life history is likely adapted to these cycles.

Feeding

Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi is presumed to be a broadly omnivorous or bottom-feeding cyprinid, consistent with the feeding ecology of large barbs from comparable river systems. The inferior to subterminal mouth position and well-developed barbels indicate adaptation for foraging on the river bed, taking invertebrates, detritus, plant material and small organisms disturbed from the substrate by the current.

Detailed studies of the species' diet in the wild are not available in widely accessible literature. Regional Iraqi fisheries research has documented aspects of the species' biology in the context of the Tigris River fishery, but this work is not extensively represented in international databases. The species' ecological role in the Tigris system as a mid-to-large consumer of benthic invertebrates and organic material is consistent with its morphology and the ecology of related large barbs.

Mating

As a member of the family Cyprinidae and the broader barb lineage, Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, bubble-nest, mouthbrooding or any form of parental care in this or any other barb. Spawning is almost certainly tied to seasonal river conditions — rising water temperatures and changes in flow associated with spring or early summer in the Tigris basin — as is typical for large temperate-zone river barbs.

Mating behaviour in large rheophilic barbs typically involves males pursuing gravid females through the water column or over gravel substrates, releasing eggs and milt in broadcast fashion. The eggs, once fertilised, settle onto or among the river substrate and receive no further attention from either parent. Specific observations of courtship behaviour in Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi have not been reported in the accessible literature.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi has been documented in the Western aquarium literature. As a large, seasonally migratory or seasonally breeding barb from a major river system, it would present significant challenges for aquarium reproduction — requiring space appropriate to its adult size, appropriate water temperature cycling to simulate seasonal cues, and gravel or coarse substrate over which scattered eggs could settle beyond the reach of adults.

The general pattern for large riverine barbs of this type is seasonal broadcast spawning over gravel, with no parental care and high fecundity. Eggs and larvae are at the mercy of river currents and substrate conditions. The species' importance as a food fish in the Tigris basin means that its reproductive biology is of interest to Iraqi fisheries management, though findings from that work are not widely available in international sources.

In the aquarium

Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium hobby outside its native region, where it is known primarily as a food and artisanal fishery species rather than an ornamental fish. It is not available through the international ornamental trade to any documented extent, and no care guides, breeding reports or long-term keeping records appear in the Western hobby literature.

Should the species ever become available to specialist keepers, its requirements would reflect its origin: a very large aquarium or indoor pond with strong filtration and good oxygenation, cool-to-warm temperate water in the range appropriate to the Tigris basin (with seasonal variation), neutral to moderately alkaline chemistry, and a diet of substantial meaty and plant-based foods appropriate to a large benthic cyprinid. It is not a fish for the general hobby.

Conservation

Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; no published assessment appears in the current IUCN database. As an endemic of the Tigris River system — one of the most heavily modified river systems in the Middle East — the species faces significant and ongoing pressures. Damming of the Tigris and its major tributaries has altered flow regimes, blocked migration routes and inundated historical spawning grounds. Water extraction for irrigation across Iraq and Turkey has reduced river levels, and pollution from agricultural and urban sources affects water quality throughout the basin.

The species' restricted endemic range and dependence on the ecological integrity of the Tigris system place it in a vulnerable position relative to the scale of hydrological change in the region. It is considered an important component of the Tigris fishery by regional authorities, and declines in large barb catches have been noted by Iraqi fisheries researchers. A formal IUCN assessment would be valuable in directing conservation attention to this and other Tigris endemics.
