Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus mastacembelus was described by the English naturalists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander in 1794, making it one of the earliest-named members of the spiny eel family. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes. That order also contains the swamp eels (Synbranchidae), and the spiny eels' nearest relatives are those air-breathing, hermaphroditic fishes, not the marine and catadromous true eels of the order Anguilliformes. The eel-like shape of Mastacembelus mastacembelus is a product of convergent evolution on a burrowing way of life and does not indicate relationship with Anguilla or any other true eel.
The genus Mastacembelus spans both Africa and tropical Asia, and several African genera (Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, Afromastacembelus) have been synonymised back into it over time. M. mastacembelus itself has remained stable in Mastacembelus since its original description and is not implicated in that African taxonomic churn. Molecular systematics studies of the Mesopotamian populations have examined morphological variation across the Tigris–Euphrates range and confirmed species identity, though regional morphological differences among populations from Turkey, Iran and Iraq have been documented.
The common name Mesopotamian spiny eel refers directly to the historical heartland of its range — the alluvial plains between the Tigris and Euphrates — and the species epithet mastacembelus is unusual in being shared with the genus name, reflecting its status as the nominal type of the group.
Morphology
The Mesopotamian spiny eel is a large fish by the standards of its family, reaching total lengths of well over 29.5 in in the wild and weighing over 200 g at full size. FishBase records a maximum length of 18.5 in for males and unsexed fish in the primary database entry, but field studies from Turkish rivers and reservoir surveys document males up to 32 in TL and females up to 30.5 in TL — figures that reflect the wide size range across its subtropical range. Maximum weight is recorded at 232.45 g.
The body is greatly elongate and somewhat compressed, scaleless to the eye and coated in mucus, with a characteristic fleshy snout drawn out into a short, probing proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils. Along the dorsal midline run a series of short, isolated spines ahead of the soft dorsal fin, the feature that gives the family its common name. The dorsal and anal fins are continuous around the tapered tail. Ground colour tends toward olive, grey-brown or yellowish-brown, often with irregular patterning or mottling suited to resting on muddy and sandy substrates. Sexes are not reliably distinguished externally, though ripe females become fuller-bodied in the ventral region during the reproductive season.
Habitat
Mastacembelus mastacembelus is confined to freshwater lotic and lentic habitats within the Tigris–Euphrates drainage and adjacent river systems in the Middle East. Its confirmed range covers the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and their tributaries in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran, extending into the southern Iranian basins — Karkheh, Karun, Jarrahi, Dez and Helleh — that drain into the Persian Gulf. It is the sole mastacembelid species in Turkey and one of very few spiny eels outside sub-Saharan Africa and tropical Asia.
The species occupies low-elevation habitats, favouring rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs and backwaters with muddy or sandy substrates and abundant aquatic vegetation. It is a demersal, bottom-dwelling fish that hides in plant beds or buries itself in bottom sediment during the day, emerging to forage at night. Surveys from the Keban Dam reservoir on the upper Euphrates in Turkey (2014–2018) confirm its persistence in impounded lentic environments, indicating some tolerance of modified lowland water, though it requires adequate vegetation cover and soft substrate for concealment.
Feeding
The Mesopotamian spiny eel is a nocturnal, demersal carnivore, foraging along and within the substrate after dark using its sensitive, elongate snout to locate benthic prey. Its diet in the wild has been examined through digestive-content studies, with prey items drawn from the benthic invertebrate community of lowland river and lake habitats: aquatic insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and similar small organisms associated with muddy-sandy bottoms and aquatic vegetation.
In the aquarium, meaty foods offered in the evening suit its nocturnal habits best: bloodworm, earthworms, chopped prawns and other invertebrate-based foods are accepted, and settled specimens may eventually take sinking pellets. Like other large spiny eels it is a deliberate, unhurried feeder that should not be placed in tanks with fast mid-water competitors that can monopolise food before it reaches the bottom. Newly imported fish often refuse food for several days or feed only in darkness while acclimatising.
Mating
As a member of the family Mastacembelidae, Mastacembelus mastacembelus is an egg-scattering spawner that gives no parental care. It does not undertake any form of marine or oceanic migration — it is not catadromous and has no connection to the semelparous, ocean-going reproductive strategy of the true eels (Anguilla). All reproduction takes place in fresh water.
Spawning is thought to be triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature and water level associated with spring and early summer flood pulses in the Tigris–Euphrates catchment — that stimulate courtship between adults. Experimental artificial insemination of M. mastacembelus has reportedly achieved fertilisation rates around 80 percent, indicating ripe adults are present and spawning-ready in the warm season, though detailed wild behavioural accounts are scarce given the fish's nocturnal, burrowing habits and turbid habitat. Courtship among spiny eels generally involves a pair circling and entwining among vegetation before adhesive eggs are scattered.
Breeding
Mastacembelus mastacembelus reproduces as a freshwater egg-scatterer in the manner typical of the Mastacembelidae: a spawning pair scatters adhesive eggs among aquatic plants, roots or leaf litter, after which no parental care is provided and adults play no further role. The eggs are left to develop among vegetation, hatching into tiny larvae that must fend for themselves.
Breeding in the home aquarium is rarely achieved. The species' large adult size, the need for a spacious and mature set-up, the difficulty of conditioning a compatible pair through an appropriate seasonal temperature and photoperiod cycle, and the very small size of the larvae all present significant barriers to successful captive spawning. The experimental artificial insemination work conducted on this species demonstrates that reproduction can be controlled under managed conditions, but this lies outside typical hobby practice. Most aquarium specimens are wild-caught; buyers should factor in the species' potentially long captive lifespan when making a purchase.
In the aquarium
The Mesopotamian spiny eel is occasionally kept by hobbyists with an interest in Middle Eastern freshwater fish, and it makes a rewarding, if large and demanding, aquarium subject. Adults reach 29.5 in or more and require a spacious aquarium — a tank of at least 59 in in length is a sensible minimum for a single adult — furnished with a deep bed of fine sand for burrowing and ample cave-work, pipe sections and shaded retreats. Like all mastacembelids it is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based medications and to fluctuating or poor water quality; a stable, mature, well-filtered system is essential.
The most critical hardware consideration is a fully sealed, escape-proof lid. Spiny eels are tenacious escape artists that can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps and will leave the water and die on the floor if given the opportunity. All cover panes and cable entries must be secured. The species is nocturnal and generally peaceful toward tankmates too large to be consumed, but it will take small fishes and invertebrates in darkness. Meaty foods offered after lights-out suit its feeding rhythm. With appropriate conditions it is long-lived and can become a conspicuous and recognisable resident of a large display aquarium.
Conservation
Mastacembelus mastacembelus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2013). The assessment reflects the species' relatively broad distribution across the Tigris–Euphrates basin and its persistence in modified habitats including reservoirs, suggesting no range-wide decline at the time of assessment.
Nonetheless, the river systems on which it depends face serious and growing pressure. Damming of the Tigris and Euphrates — particularly in Turkey, where major hydroelectric and irrigation schemes have transformed large stretches of the upper Euphrates — alters flow regimes, inundates historically riverine habitat, and can fragment populations. Agricultural water extraction, pollution from agricultural runoff and urban development, and hydrological changes associated with reduced catchment rainfall all affect lowland river quality across the species' range. The species is also exploited as a food fish in parts of its range. Given that the last assessment is now more than a decade old and that pressures on Mesopotamian freshwater systems have intensified, a reassessment with updated population data would be informative.
