Luciobarbus esocinus, the pike barb or mangar, is the largest cyprinid of the Tigris–Euphrates river system and one of the most massive freshwater fishes of the Middle East — adults regularly exceed a metre in length and 60 kg, and the record approaches 8 ft and 140 kg. Described by Heckel in 1843 under the name Barbus esocinus, it takes its common epithet from a superficial elongation and snout shape reminiscent of the pike. It is a migratory, benthopelagic species of large, fast-flowing rivers and reservoirs, ascending to rocky upstream reaches each spring to broadcast its eggs, and returning to deep lowland water to feed through the colder months. Prized as a food fish across Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey under local names such as bizz and mangar, it has been heavily overfished and is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Luciobarbus esocinus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1843 from the Tigris–Euphrates drainage. The type locality is the Tigris–Euphrates system. The original combination was Barbus esocinus; many older references — and much of the fisheries and ecological literature from Iraq and Iran — still use that name. The Catalog of Fishes and GBIF record the current valid combination as Luciobarbus esocinus (Heckel, 1843), placing it in the genus Luciobarbus, which encompasses the large-bodied 'barbel' lineage of the western Palearctic and Middle Eastern river systems.

The genus Luciobarbus was separated from the old broad Barbus on morphological and molecular grounds to contain the large, often predatory barbels of the Mediterranean rim and Middle East. Within the Tigris–Euphrates ichthyofauna, L. esocinus is the most massive member of the family Cyprinidae, and its elongate body plan — unusual among barbs — prompted the species epithet esocinus, meaning 'pike-like', from Esox (the pike genus).

Morphology

The pike barb is a large, elongate, fusiform cyprinid. FishBase records a maximum total length of 90.5 in and a maximum weight of 140 kg, though typical adults encountered in fisheries are 3–5 ft long and around 60 kg. The body is more slender relative to depth than many barbs, giving the pike-like silhouette that inspired its common name. The coloration is typical of a large riverine cyprinid: silvery flanks, an olivaceous or darker back, and pale underparts.

Like all Luciobarbus, it bears the two pairs of barbels at the corners of the mouth characteristic of the genus. Males mature at around 23.5 in and 7 kg (approximately 5–8 years); females are larger at maturity, typically reaching 26 in and 10 kg before their first spawn at 7–9 years. No pronounced external sexual dimorphism beyond this size difference at maturity is documented.

Habitat

Luciobarbus esocinus is native to the Tigris and Euphrates river drainages, including their tributaries in Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. It is a benthopelagic species of large rivers and associated reservoirs, showing a clear seasonal depth preference: individuals move into deeper water (averaging around 33 ft) during winter and ascend to shallower zones in spring and summer as water temperatures rise and spawning season approaches.

Water chemistry in the Tigris–Euphrates system is characterised by moderate alkalinity — research records a pH of approximately 8.2 and dissolved oxygen of around 7.5 mg/L at study sites. The species tolerates a wide temperature range of roughly 45–82 °F across the annual cycle, reflecting the marked seasonal temperature variation of Mesopotamian river systems. Preferred microhabitats include deep, flowing channels with rocky or gravel substrates, where the fish forage benthoplagically.

Feeding

The pike barb is a large, opportunistic predator and omnivore. Its elongate body and relatively pointed snout are consistent with active pursuit of prey in open water, supplemented by bottom-feeding over gravel and rock. In large river systems of the Tigris–Euphrates, it feeds on smaller fishes, invertebrates and organic matter. Its size at maturity and the ecological position it occupies in the Mesopotamian river ecosystem place it at the apex of the cyprinid guild.

Little detailed stomach-content data is available for this species in peer-reviewed literature, but its predatory habits are well known to local fishers, and its common name references the pike — a convergently elongate fish built for piscivory.

Mating

Luciobarbus esocinus is a seasonal, migratory broadcast spawner. Adults aggregate and move upstream from deep lowland river reaches and reservoir basins into shallower, faster-flowing tributaries during April and May as water temperatures climb through the spring. Like all barbs, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding species: spawning males pursue gravid females and the sexes release eggs and milt simultaneously into the water column and over gravel substrates.

No parental bond forms and no territory is defended beyond the transient courtship chase. The migratory aggregation behaviour makes the species highly vulnerable to interception by fishing during this period, which has historically been the most intensive fishery season.

Breeding

Spawning occurs from April to May, when adults migrate into the upper, rocky reaches of rivers. Research on embryonic and larval development confirms that eggs incubate successfully between 20 and 79 °F, with development proceeding more slowly at the lower end of that range. Eggs are demersal and adhesive, deposited over gravel and rocky substrate in flowing water with the high dissolved oxygen characteristic of the species' preferred spawning habitat.

Luciobarbus esocinus gives no parental care whatsoever — once eggs and milt are released the adults disperse. The species has been the subject of captive breeding trials in Iran, motivated by the need to support heavily depleted wild populations, but it is not an aquarium species and has no role in the ornamental trade.

In the aquarium

Luciobarbus esocinus is not an aquarium fish and is entirely unsuitable for the hobby. Adults reach over a metre in length and may weigh more than 60 kg, placing them in the category of large sportfish or commercial food fish rather than ornamental species. Even juveniles grow rapidly toward a size incompatible with any practical domestic aquarium.

The species is included here for completeness within the genus Luciobarbus and because it represents the ecological and conservation context of the Tigris–Euphrates cyprinid fauna. Hobbyists interested in large, riverine western barbs should look to smaller, more tractable relatives; this species belongs in rivers, not tanks.

Conservation

Luciobarbus esocinus is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated by Freyhof in 2014. The assessment cites severe declines in reported catches across the Tigris–Euphrates basin, with most remaining populations considered heavily overfished and no reliable current population data available. The species is highly prized as a food fish throughout Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey — traded under names such as bizz and mangar — and its large size, late maturity (7–9 years for females) and migratory spawning aggregations make it exceptionally vulnerable to targeted fishing pressure.

In addition to overfishing, habitat loss driven by dam construction, water extraction, altered flow regimes and pollution of the Tigris–Euphrates system has degraded or blocked spawning migration routes. Captive breeding programmes have been initiated in Iran to supplement wild stocks, but without meaningful reductions in fishing pressure and protection of spawning habitats, the long-term outlook for this species remains uncertain.
