Taxonomy & naming
Neolissochilus paucisquamatus was described by Hugh McCormick Smith in 1945. Smith worked extensively on the freshwater fishes of Thailand during his tenure with the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries and the Thai government, and the species is among his contributions to the Thai ichthyofauna. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Neolissochilus paucisquamatus H. M. Smith, 1945.
The genus Neolissochilus is a Southeast and South Asian lineage of mahseer-allied cyprinids, distinct from the large migratory mahseers of the genus Tor. Neolissochilus species inhabit fast, clear hill and mountain streams from India through Indochina and the Malay Peninsula. The genus-level taxonomy of this group has historically been complex, and older literature may apply the broad genus Barbus or Puntius to species now placed in Neolissochilus. The species epithet paucisquamatus derives from Latin, meaning 'few-scaled' — a reference to the scalation observed in the type material.
Morphology
Neolissochilus paucisquamatus is a small fish, recorded at 2 in standard length (approximately 2 in SL). Like other members of the genus, it has a moderately elongate, compressed body typical of rheophilic cyprinids adapted to fast-water environments.
Detailed morphological data beyond the original description are sparse in the accessible literature. The species is placed in Neolissochilus on the basis of its cyprinid dentition, scalation, and other meristic characters. As a mahseer-allied species it would be expected to have the robust body form and large scales characteristic of the group, with the species epithet ('few-scaled') suggesting a lower lateral-line scale count than related taxa. Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been documented in the available literature.
Habitat
The species is associated with mountainous areas of the Nakhon Si Tammarat range in Peninsular Thailand, an inland mountain chain running roughly north–south through the Thai–Malay Peninsula, with its range also including Myanmar. This geography implies a habitat of clear, fast-flowing hill and mountain streams — the characteristic environment of the genus Neolissochilus across its range.
Neolissochilus species generally prefer cool, highly oxygenated, rapid streams with rocky or gravel substrates, in forested catchments where canopy shading helps maintain cool temperatures and where terrestrial invertebrate input supplements the stream's own productivity. The Nakhon Si Tammarat range rises to over 1,2625 ft, and streams descending these slopes would be expected to be clean, swift and relatively cool compared to lowland Peninsular rivers. Specific water chemistry data for N. paucisquamatus have not been published.
Feeding
No specific feeding studies have been conducted on Neolissochilus paucisquamatus. Extrapolating from the genus and its rheophilic hill-stream lifestyle, the species is likely an omnivore feeding on small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans, and worms — as well as algae, periphyton scraped from rocky substrates, and terrestrial insects that fall into the stream.
Smaller Neolissochilus species in comparable habitats are opportunistic feeders, exploiting the invertebrate drift and biofilm typical of clear, fast-flowing hill streams. The compact size of N. paucisquamatus (under 2.5 in SL) suggests it occupies a niche among the smaller prey items available in its montane stream habitat.
Mating
Like all barbs and mahseers, Neolissochilus paucisquamatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific observations of courtship or spawning behaviour for this species have been published. Across the Neolissochilus genus and the broader mahseer lineage, spawning behaviour follows the cyprinid pattern in which males pursue gravid females and broadcast eggs and milt without nest construction or any subsequent parental involvement.
Larger mahseer and river barbs in this lineage are often seasonal spawners, undertaking upstream migrations to gravel beds for breeding when water temperatures and flow conditions align — typically linked to the monsoon cycle. A species of this size in a montane stream context would be expected to spawn seasonally over gravel or among submerged structure, with no pair bond persisting beyond the act of spawning.
Breeding
Specific breeding data for Neolissochilus paucisquamatus are not available in the literature. As a member of the mahseer-allied Neolissochilus, the species reproduces as a broadcast egg-scatterer with no parental care: eggs and milt are released simultaneously over gravel or among submerged structure, the adhesive or semi-demersal eggs settling into the substrate, and adults play no further role in egg or larval survival.
The species has not been bred in aquaria and is not part of the ornamental trade. Breeding in wild montane populations would be expected to occur seasonally, likely timed to post-monsoon conditions or to temperature and flow cues from the mountain streams of the Nakhon Si Tammarat range. Fecundity and larval development data are unknown.
In the aquarium
Neolissochilus paucisquamatus does not appear in the ornamental fish trade and has not been kept or bred in aquaria to any documented extent. Its small size (under 2.5 in) means it would not face the space demands of larger mahseers, but its ecological requirements — clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, relatively cool hill-stream water — would make it a challenging species to maintain successfully in captivity.
For the aquarist interested in Neolissochilus, several more accessible relatives from Peninsular Malaysia and Indochina are occasionally available through specialist importers. Any attempt to keep montane hill-stream barbs of this type should prioritise high dissolved oxygen, strong current, a rocky or gravel substrate, and cool, near-neutral, low-nutrient water reflecting the clear upland streams these fish inhabit.
Conservation
Neolissochilus paucisquamatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The species is restricted to the mountainous streams of the Nakhon Si Tammarat range in Peninsular Thailand and adjacent parts of Myanmar — a relatively restricted range that is nonetheless contained within terrain that has so far experienced less intensive lowland agricultural and industrial development than many parts of the Thai Peninsula.
The primary long-term threats to montane hill-stream species in this region are deforestation of upland catchments, which increases silt load and water temperature and reduces the stable, clear-water conditions these fish depend on, along with any large-scale water extraction or infrastructure development in the highlands. The species' small size and restricted known range mean that systematic monitoring would be needed to detect any population-level changes. It plays no role in the ornamental trade and is not subject to collection pressure.
