Neolissochilus capudelphinus is a large mahseer-type barb described in 2017 from the Periyar River in Kerala, India — one of five new Neolissochilus species formally named from Western Ghats stream systems in a single paper. Known only from the upper Periyar drainage, it is a rheophilic cyprinid of fast-flowing, rocky hill streams in one of the world's most celebrated freshwater biodiversity hotspots. Like all Western Ghats mahseers, it faces pressure from dam construction, water diversion, and the broader degradation of the river catchments it depends on, and it has not yet been assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Neolissochilus capudelphinus was described by Arunachalam, Sivakumar and Murugan in 2017 in the journal FishTaxa (volume 2, issue 1, pages 1–27), as part of a study that simultaneously named four other new Neolissochilus species from the Western Ghats of southern India. The holotype, specimen MSUMNH191 with a standard length of 8.5 in, was collected on 16 March 2003 from a site upstream of a water diversion point on the Periyar River in Kerala. The species was diagnosed using a combination of meristic, morphometric and molecular characters.

The genus Neolissochilus belongs to the family Cyprinidae and encompasses a group of large, fast-water barbs distributed across South and Southeast Asia, sometimes referred to as khavra mahseers or small-scaled mahseers to distinguish them from the giant mahseers of Tor. The Western Ghats lineage of Neolissochilus was historically underexplored taxonomically, and the 2017 revision substantially expanded the known diversity of the group in peninsular India. No former combination under Puntius or Barbus is recorded for this species; capudelphinus was described directly into Neolissochilus.

The specific epithet capudelphinus has not been formally etymologised in a source captured for this article; the precise derivation remains to be confirmed from the original description.

Morphology

The holotype of Neolissochilus capudelphinus measured 8.5 in standard length, indicating a large-bodied fish consistent with the rheophilic mahseer habit of the genus. Neolissochilus species as a group are elongate, moderately compressed cyprinids with a robust caudal peduncle, a subterminal to terminal mouth suited to grazing hard substrates, and moderately large, cycloid scales. They typically show a relatively plain, silvery to bronze coloration, often with a faint lateral stripe or scale-margin markings.

Detailed published morphometrics and meristics for N. capudelphinus beyond holotype standard length are not available in currently accessible literature. The original FishTaxa description (Arunachalam et al. 2017) provides the full diagnostic character set, including fin-ray and scale counts, alongside comparisons with the four other newly described Western Ghats congeners.

Habitat

The type locality is the Periyar River in Kerala, in the southern Western Ghats. The collection point was upstream of a water diversion structure, placing it in the upper river course where gradient is steeper and flow faster. Neolissochilus species throughout their range are characteristic inhabitants of clear, fast-flowing mountain and hill streams with rocky or gravelly bottoms and high dissolved oxygen; they are sensitive to siltation, flow reduction and thermal warming.

Water-chemistry data from the broader Periyar River system indicate a temperature range of approximately 73–82 °F, pH in the range of roughly 5.7–8.7 depending on season and location (with reaches relevant to hill-stream cyprinids trending toward circumneutral to mildly alkaline), and relatively low hardness. The Periyar drains the high-rainfall western slope of the Ghats before reaching the lowlands of Kerala, and its upper reaches support an endemic cyprinid and loach fauna that is among the most species-rich in peninsular India.

Feeding

No direct dietary study of Neolissochilus capudelphinus has been published. Large mahseer-type barbs in comparable habitats across South and Southeast Asia are typically omnivorous, taking algae, periphyton, plant matter, aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and small crustaceans. The subterminal mouth of Neolissochilus, combined with a rheophilic lifestyle in rocky, well-lit streams, is consistent with a diet weighted toward benthic grazing on biofilm, algae and aufwuchs, supplemented by drifting invertebrates.

In the aquarium, closely related large barbs and mahseers accept a broad diet: high-quality sinking pellets, vegetable-based foods, and occasional offerings of live or frozen invertebrates. Given the scarcity of this species in the trade, published captive-diet observations are absent.

Mating

Neolissochilus capudelphinus has not been studied in reproduction. Large river barbs and mahseers across Asia are seasonal broadcast spawners whose breeding migrations are often tied to monsoon-driven changes in water temperature and flow. In many Neolissochilus and Tor species, rising waters and cooler post-monsoon temperatures act as spawning triggers, with fish ascending into shallow, fast-running hill streams to spawn over gravel.

As with all barbs, N. capudelphinus is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Males pursue gravid females over suitable spawning grounds; there is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no form of courtship other than the chasing drive. Eggs and milt are released together, and neither parent provides any subsequent care.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Neolissochilus capudelphinus is documented. Large mahseer-type barbs are rarely maintained in aquaria — their size, requirement for cool and highly oxygenated water, and restricted availability in the trade make them impractical for most hobbyists. In the wild, spawning is presumed to follow the pattern common to the genus: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered over gravel or rocky substrates in flowing water, where they receive no parental care.

Eggs and larvae are entirely at the mercy of the current and substrate once released; the adults take no further interest in the clutch. Any captive breeding program for conservation purposes would need to replicate the seasonal temperature and flow cues of the Periyar River system.

In the aquarium

Neolissochilus capudelphinus is not a species currently available in the ornamental trade, and its holotype standard length of over 8.5 in indicates an adult size incompatible with most home aquaria. Were it ever kept, the requirements of the genus — large, well-filtered tanks with strong current, high dissolved oxygen, cool to moderate temperatures (broadly 73–82 °F reflecting the Periyar system), and a near-neutral to mildly alkaline pH — would apply.

Large mahseer-type barbs are powerful, active swimmers that require correspondingly large facilities and tankmates of similar size. The species is best regarded as a fish of conservation and research interest rather than a hobbyist subject. Its primary significance is as a part of the endemic cyprinid fauna of the Western Ghats, a globally recognised freshwater biodiversity hotspot.

Conservation

Neolissochilus capudelphinus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its known range is restricted to the Periyar River drainage in Kerala, making it a narrowly endemic species. The Periyar River, though partially protected within the Periyar Tiger Reserve in its upper reaches, is subject to significant anthropogenic pressure along its length, including hydroelectric dams, irrigation diversions, and water extraction that alter the flow regime and temperature profile of the channels. The holotype was itself collected upstream of a water diversion point, indicating that managed abstraction reaches the species' habitat.

The Western Ghats freshwater fauna as a whole faces ongoing losses from habitat degradation, overfishing, sand mining, and invasive species introductions. Rheophilic cyprinids dependent on fast, clear, well-oxygenated streams are among the most vulnerable guilds because they cannot simply shift to slower or warmer reaches when their habitats are disturbed. A formal IUCN assessment of N. capudelphinus, combined with surveys to clarify its range across the Periyar and potentially adjacent Western Ghats drainages, is a research priority.
