Taxonomy & naming
Neolissochilus benasi was described by the French ichthyologists Jacques Pellegrin and Pierre Chevey in 1936 from specimens collected in Indochina. The species was placed in the genus Neolissochilus Rainboth, 1985, which groups the Indochinese and Sundaic mahseers distinct from both the South Asian Tor and the smaller barbs of the old catch-all genus Puntius. GBIF and ITIS both record the valid combination as Neolissochilus benasi (Pellegrin & Chevey, 1936), consistent with the Catalog of Fishes treatment.
Neolissochilus is a genus of large, streamlined, fast-water cyprinids distributed across mainland Southeast Asia and Sundaland. The genus was established to separate the Indochinese mahseers from the South Asian Tor on morphological grounds, though the two share many ecological traits — preference for fast, cool, well-oxygenated hill rivers and a diet dominated by benthic material. N. benasi sits within a regional assemblage of mahseers in the rivers of Indochina that also includes Tor species, as documented in the peer-reviewed survey of mahseers from southern Vietnam by Pinder et al.
The species epithet benasi likely honours a French colonial-era naturalist or collector associated with Indochina, a common naming convention in the ichthyological work of Pellegrin's period, though documentation of the dedicatee from the original description is sparse in the available literature. The name Neolissochilus namlenensis is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Neolissochilus benasi is a moderately sized mahseer reaching approximately 7 in in total length (TL) or 7 in standard length (SL) per FishBase records. It has the characteristic body plan of the Neolissochilus mahseers: laterally compressed, fusiform, with a slightly arched dorsal profile, large scales, and a subterminal mouth suited for grazing the benthos. The fins are well developed, reflecting adaptation to fast-water environments.
Detailed colouration data for wild specimens are sparse in the available literature, but the informal English name Golden Arrow Mahseer (recorded by iNaturalist) suggests a warm-toned body with some metallic reflectivity typical of the genus in life. Habitat
The species inhabits freshwater river systems in subtropical northern and central Vietnam and adjacent Yunnan, China. FishBase records it from two distinct basin systems: the Trà Khúc River in Quảng Ngãi province, which drains directly to the South China Sea, and the Red River (Hồng Hà) basin, which rises in Yunnan and flows through northern Vietnam. These are hill and montane river systems characterised by moderate to strong current, gravel and cobble substrates, and high oxygen availability.

Feeding
Neolissochilus benasi is a benthopelagic species in the manner typical of mahseers of its size class. Breeding
No captive-breeding account for Neolissochilus benasi appears in the hobby or scientific literature. Like the larger Tor mahseers, species of Neolissochilus are rarely maintained in the ornamental trade and have not been established in captive reproduction programmes. Their size at maturity, requirement for large volumes of clean, well-oxygenated water, and likely dependence on seasonal environmental cues make them impractical for standard aquarium breeding.
In the wild, reproduction is inferred to follow the egg-scattering pattern of the family: broadcast spawning over gravel substrates in fast water, with fertilised eggs left without parental care. Adults eat eggs given the opportunity, as is typical of the family. Fry develop in the current and are carried to quieter marginal habitats as they grow.
