Striuntius lateristriga, the spanner barb or T-barb, is a large, robust cyprinid native to the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo, where it inhabits clear forest streams and pools at waterfall bases over smooth water-worn rocks, sand, and gravel. One of the bigger barbs in the aquarium trade — reaching roughly 5–6 in in standard length — it is named for the distinctive lateral stripe and bar marking that together form a spanner or T-shape on each flank. The species has been traded under several genus names over its history, most recently as Barbodes and Systomus, but the Catalog of Fishes now places it in Striuntius.

Taxonomy & naming

Striuntius lateristriga was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1842, with Java, Indonesia cited as the type locality. The original generic placement has changed repeatedly: the species has been carried as Barbus lateristriga (Valenciennes, 1842), then Puntius lateristriga, then Systomus lateristriga and Barbodes lateristriga in more recent literature. The Catalog of Fishes now recognises the valid combination as Striuntius lateristriga (Valenciennes, 1842), the parenthetical authority indicating the move out of Valenciennes's original genus.

The genus Striuntius was established to accommodate a small cluster of larger, boldly patterned barbs from Sundaland and the Malay Peninsula that had been shuffled among various wider assemblages as the old catch-all Puntius was progressively dismantled from 2012 onward. The species has been synonymised at various points with Barbodes kuchingensis, a Bornean form, but the two are generally distinguished by their colour patterns. Six or more regional colour forms have been documented in Peninsular Malaysia alone, reflecting the species' wide range and patchwork of forest-stream populations.

Morphology

The spanner barb is a large, moderately deep-bodied cyprinid reaching a maximum of about 7.5 in total length in the wild, with a standard length of 5–6 in being more typical of adults. The body is laterally compressed and deeper than most smaller barb species, with a rounded dorsal profile and a fairly blunt snout.

The key identification feature is the bold black patterning: a horizontal lateral stripe running the length of the flank intersects a vertical bar at roughly the mid-body, together producing the T- or spanner shape that gives the fish its common names. Ground colour is a pale silver to golden-olive, and the fins may carry yellow or orange tints. Pattern intensity and exact configuration vary considerably between regional populations. Sexual dimorphism is moderate — females become noticeably rounder and fuller-bodied when gravid, while males are more slender.

Habitat

Striuntius lateristriga occurs across a broad range of freshwater habitats in Sundaland and the Malay Peninsula, including southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo, as well as smaller associated islands such as Tioman and the Anambas archipelago. Its core habitat is clear forest streams with pools at waterfall bases, where the substrate consists of smooth water-worn rocks and boulders, coarse sand, and gravel, often with submerged wood and leaf litter. Aquatic plants including Cryptocoryne and Barclaya have been recorded at such sites.

The species is also found in peat-swamp and blackwater systems across parts of its range, where conditions are markedly more acidic — pH as low as 3.0–4.0 has been recorded. Water chemistry across the range therefore spans a wide bracket: pH 6.0–8.0 in the clearwater forest-stream form of its habitat, with temperatures typically around 68–82 °F and hardness broadly soft to moderately hard (18–179 ppm). The species is benthic and associated with structured, heterogeneous substrates rather than open still water.

Feeding

Striuntius lateristriga is an omnivore that exploits a diverse range of food items in the wild. Recorded diet components include worms, crustaceans, aquatic insects, organic detritus, diatoms, algae, and zooplankton — a broad catholicity typical of larger barbs foraging over structured stream substrates.

In the aquarium the species adapts readily to a mixed diet of quality pellets or sticks (appropriate to its size), live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, earthworm, and crustaceans, and plant-based foods including blanched vegetables and spirulina. Its size means it requires appropriately sized food items; very small flake food is inadequate for adults. As with many opportunistic omnivores, variety in feeding maintains good health and colouration.

Mating

Like all barbs, the spanner barb is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built and no pair bond persists beyond the spawning act. A receptive male courts a gravid female by driving her persistently through vegetation, over rocks, or along the substrate; when both fish are ready, they press close together and release eggs and milt simultaneously.

Spawning activity is often triggered by changes in water temperature or rainfall that mimic seasonal flood pulses in the natural habitat. Colour intensity and male-to-male competition increase in the lead-up to spawning, with bolder males pursuing females most actively. The adhesive eggs fall among plants or substrate debris, where — in the absence of any parental attention — they are at risk of being consumed by the adults.

Breeding

Conditioning a pair or small group of spanner barbs for breeding typically involves generous feeding on live or frozen invertebrates over several weeks. A separate spawning tank with fine-leaved plants, spawning mops, or a mesh floor layer to protect the eggs from being eaten is the usual approach. The fish are introduced in the evening; spawning usually occurs the following morning as the light strengthens.

Females may deposit a substantial clutch of adhesive eggs that fall among the plants or through the mesh and out of the adults' reach. Adults should be removed after spawning concludes since they will eat eggs and larvae if left in. Eggs hatch in roughly 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures; fry become free-swimming a few days later and should be started on infusoria or very fine commercial fry food before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. The species is not commonly bred commercially in large numbers compared with smaller barbs, but it has been bred successfully by dedicated hobbyists.

In the aquarium

The spanner barb is an active, robust fish that needs space appropriate to its size — a minimum footprint of around 47 in is often cited for a small group, with larger being better. It is a social species and is best kept in a group of five or more to ensure natural shoaling behaviour and to distribute any inter-individual aggression. Kept singly or in pairs it may become skittish or quarrelsome with other tank inhabitants.

Water should be maintained at 68–82 °F with a broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH and soft to moderate hardness, reflecting its forest-stream origins. The aquascape is best furnished with smooth rocks, driftwood, sand, and some robust planting — fine-leaved or delicate plants may be damaged by a large active barb. Suitable tankmates are other robust, active fishes of similar size; small or long-finned companions are at risk of harassment. The spanner barb is long-lived for an aquarium barb and, given adequate space and a varied diet, a rewarding display fish.

Conservation

Striuntius lateristriga is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, most recently evaluated in January 2019. The species is wide-ranging across the Malay Peninsula and major Sunda islands, and no range-wide population decline has been documented. It appears in the aquarium trade and is exported from collection points in Malaysia and Indonesia, though the extent of wild-capture pressure relative to captive production is not precisely quantified.

The longer-term risks to the species, as with much of the Sundaland freshwater fauna, are habitat-based rather than direct overexploitation. Deforestation across Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo has degraded and fragmented the clear forest-stream and peat-swamp habitats on which the species depends. Conversion of peat swamps for agriculture, water extraction, and pollution from plantation run-off all reduce the quality and extent of suitable lowland freshwater habitat throughout its range. The species' tolerance of a broad water-chemistry envelope and its occurrence across a wide geographic footprint provide a buffer, but local populations in heavily modified landscapes may face significant pressure.
