Taxonomy & naming
Amphilius dimonikensis was described by Paul Skelton in 2007 in Zootaxa (vol. 1578), in a paper covering several new species of the amphiliid catfish genera Amphilius, Doumea and Phractura along with a review of Paramphilius from West Central Africa. It belongs to the family Amphiliidae, the African loach catfishes, and to the genus Amphilius, one of the larger genera in that family, distributed across fast-flowing streams from West to Central and East Africa.
The description was based on a small series of six specimens. The species epithet dimonikensis refers to the Dimonika area of the Mayombe forest in the Republic of Congo, near the type locality. As with many recently described small-stream Amphilius, the Catalog of Fishes treats Amphilius dimonikensis as the currently valid name, and no older synonyms or reassignments are recorded for it — it was named directly into its current genus and has not needed correction from an older combination.
Morphology
Amphilius dimonikensis is a genuinely small catfish: the type series measured 2–3 in standard length, making the largest known specimen only a few centimetres long. Like all amphiliids it is scaleless, with a naked, soft skin rather than the bony plating seen in loricariid catfishes — a trait shared with loaches and puffers that makes it comparatively sensitive to certain medications.
The original description separates it from close relatives using a combination of fin-ray and vertebral counts — 6+7 principal caudal-fin rays and 31–32 vertebrae — together with the position of the eye, set slightly closer to the rear margin of the head than to the tip of the snout. Body colour follows the typical amphiliid pattern for this group: a series of regular brown bands alternating with lighter saddles along the back, giving a banded rather than spotted or plain appearance.
Habitat
The species is known only from the type locality in the Kiadi River, part of the Mpoulou–Kouilou river system in the Mayombe region of the Republic of Congo, close to the Dimonika Biosphere Reserve. This is hill and forest-stream country, and Amphiliidae as a family are specialists of fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, rocky highland and montane streams rather than slow lowland rivers, so A. dimonikensis almost certainly shares that stream-dwelling, current-loving habit even though detailed field notes on this particular species are sparse.
No separate water-chemistry data have been recorded for this species specifically. Data sparse beyond the type-locality river system; broader family context suggests soft, running highland-stream water, but that should not be treated as a confirmed figure for this species.
Feeding
No diet study exists for Amphilius dimonikensis specifically. Amphiliid loach catfishes as a group are nocturnal benthic omnivores that forage the streambed after dark for aquatic invertebrates, detritus and small prey items, and there is no reason to expect this species departs from that pattern given its small size and stream habitat.
In the near-total absence of aquarium accounts, any care recommendation has to extrapolate from the family: a sinking, invertebrate-based diet offered after lights-out would suit its presumed nocturnal, bottom-foraging habits, but this is inference from Amphiliidae generally rather than a documented fact about this species.
Mating
Nothing has been published on the courtship or spawning behaviour of Amphilius dimonikensis. The species is known only from its original type series, collected for taxonomic description rather than behavioural study, and no subsequent field or aquarium observations appear in the literature.
Breeding
Breeding biology is unrecorded for this species — data sparse. It has never been reported as bred, or even reliably kept, in captivity, and there is no aquarium-trade history to draw on. Given how little is known, no breeding mode should be assumed here; this account deliberately does not guess at egg-scattering, cave-spawning or any other mode for A. dimonikensis specifically.
In the aquarium
Amphilius dimonikensis has no established presence in the aquarium hobby — it is not a species that is collected, traded or kept, and this account exists for taxonomic completeness rather than as care guidance from direct experience. Anyone who encountered a genuine specimen should treat it, at minimum, as a small stream fish under 4 in that needs strong current and high oxygenation, in line with its Amphiliidae relatives.
Two family-level cautions still apply if it were ever kept: like other amphiliids it is scaleless, so it should be treated as medication-sensitive and dosed conservatively with copper-based treatments, the same caution used for loaches and other naked-skinned catfishes; and as a true stream specialist it would very likely struggle in still, warm, low-oxygen aquarium conditions. There is no size trap here in the usual sense — the confirmed maximum is only around 3 in — but the near-total absence of husbandry data is itself the main caution.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Amphilius dimonikensis as Vulnerable (VU). The species is known only from its type locality in the Kiadi River, a tributary within the Mpoulou–Kouilou system in the Republic of Congo, which puts it in the classic single-river-endemic risk category shared by many small amphiliid catfishes described from a handful of specimens.
Because the known range sits near the Dimonika Biosphere Reserve in the Mayombe forest, habitat degradation, deforestation and stream disturbance in that watershed are the most plausible pressures on a narrow-range highland-stream endemic like this, though species-specific threat data beyond the Red List assessment itself is sparse. There is no aquarium trade to create collection pressure; the conservation concern here is purely habitat-driven.
