Taxonomy & naming
Amphilius engelbrechti was described by Nolusindiso Mazungula and Albert Chakona in 2021 in the Journal of Fish Biology, as part of an integrative taxonomic revision that split the widespread "Amphilius natalensis" into a complex of distinct species — four new species were described in that paper. It belongs to the family Amphiliidae (the African loach catfishes) within the genus Amphilius.
The type locality is the Waterhoutboom River, a tributary of the Inkomati River in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa (24°57'19.9"S, 30°54'31.20"E). The species epithet honours Johan Engelbrecht, recognised for his contributions to ichthyological research in southern Africa. Because the species is so recently described and narrowly known, it has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN (Not Evaluated).
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Amphilius engelbrechti has an elongated, cylindrical body with a short, broad, depressed head suited to hugging the substrate in strong current, and three pairs of fringed barbels. The pectoral and pelvic fins are expanded with a thickened leading ray, the body is flattened, and the eyes sit dorsally — all classic adaptations for a fish that lives pinned against rock in fast water. A feeble, pelvic-fin-derived sucker disc helps it cling to stone in the flow, and the swim bladder is reduced, another torrent-dwelling adaptation that keeps the fish close to the bottom.
Maximum recorded size is small: about 3 in standard length (FishBase), making this one of the more modestly sized Amphilius species. As with virtually all catfishes in this family the skin is scaleless (naked), which is an important care consideration — see "In the aquarium".
Habitat
Amphilius engelbrechti is currently known only from its type locality, the Waterhoutboom River, a cool tributary of the Inkomati River system in Mpumalanga, South Africa, at an elevation of roughly 900–1,984 ft. This part of the Inkomati system is characterised by torrential flow in the wet season (November–March) and much reduced flow in the dry season (April–October), running over rocky substrates.
These mountain streams are well-oxygenated and relatively cool for a South African river system, consistent with the genus Amphilius generally being restricted to fast, rocky, highly oxygenated water rather than slow, still habitats. Data are not available to characterise the water chemistry of the type locality precisely; based on the closely related, better-studied A. natalensis and the general habitat description, cool, clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water is the defining requirement.
Feeding
No diet data specific to Amphilius engelbrechti have been documented. Amphilius species in general are nocturnal benthic omnivores/micro-predators, foraging over rock and gravel after dark for aquatic invertebrates and other small food items typical of fast, rocky-bottomed streams.
In the absence of species-specific feeding data, the safest approach for a fish of this genus is to offer sinking foods — small pellets, frozen bloodworm and similar invertebrate-based foods — after lights-out, when this kind of rheophilic catfish would naturally be most active and least likely to be out-competed by diurnal tankmates.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been documented for Amphilius engelbrechti specifically. The closely related A. natalensis is reported to breed during the summer months, apparently triggered by seasonal rainfall and the associated rise in flow — a pattern consistent with a torrent-dwelling fish timing reproduction to the wet season when its rocky-riffle habitat is most active.
No courtship, spawning-site, or pairing behaviour has been recorded for this species; data are sparse, and nothing should be assumed beyond the seasonal, rain-triggered pattern seen in its close relative.
Breeding
Amphilius engelbrechti has not been reported bred in the aquarium, and no details of its reproductive biology beyond the general seasonal pattern noted for A. natalensis are available. As a narrow-range mountain-stream endemic only described in 2021, it is not established in the hobby at all, let alone spawned in captivity.
Given the genus's dependence on cool, fast, highly oxygenated water and its cryptic, rock-clinging lifestyle, any future captive breeding would likely require closely simulating those torrent conditions — strong flow, high dissolved oxygen and a seasonal temperature or flow cue — rather than a standard still-water setup. This remains speculative; the honest position is that breeding is undocumented.
In the aquarium
Amphilius engelbrechti is not a fish encountered in the aquarium trade — it is a narrow-range South African endemic only formally described in 2021, known from a single tributary. Anyone who did encounter it would need to treat it as a specialised rheophile: strong current, high dissolved oxygen, cool water, and a rocky substrate with crevices for cover, mimicking the torrential mountain-stream habitat it comes from. At a maximum of roughly 3 in SL it stays genuinely small, but small size does not make it easy — its oxygen and flow requirements are demanding and it would be a poor fit for a typical still-water community tank.
Two care points follow directly from its biology, shared with the wider family Amphiliidae: it is a scaleless catfish, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and to many medications and should be dosed conservatively; and while Amphilius species lack the heavy locking spines of some larger catfish families, the stiffened first rays of the pectoral and pelvic fins mean it should still be handled gently and moved in a container rather than squeezed in a net. There is no established aquarium husbandry record for this species to draw on.
Conservation
Amphilius engelbrechti has not yet been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is listed as Not Evaluated. It is known only from its type locality in the Inkomati River system, and as with most recently described, single-catchment South African stream fishes, its true range and population status are not yet documented.
The closely related A. natalensis, assessed by SANBI, is Least Concern but faces threats from sedimentation, water abstraction and invasive trout in the same class of cool mountain tributaries this genus depends on — pressures that would plausibly apply to A. engelbrechti's habitat too, though no formal assessment exists to confirm this. Its narrow known range makes it a species worth monitoring even before a formal Red List assessment is completed.
