Taxonomy & naming
Amphilius frieli was described by Ryan L. Thomson and Lawrence M. Page in 2015 as one of five new species carved out of the Amphilius jacksonii complex in a revision of that group (Siluriformes: Amphiliidae). Before the split, populations now recognised as A. frieli would have been lumped under the broader, poorly resolved A. jacksonii. It belongs to the genus Amphilius within family Amphiliidae, the loach catfishes of Africa, and the Catalog of Fishes treats Amphilius frieli as the current valid name.
The species epithet honours the ichthyologist John P. Friel, recognising his contributions to the study of African catfishes. Diagnostically the species is separated from its close relatives in the jacksonii complex chiefly by gill raker counts (10–11), a detail that matters for taxonomists more than aquarists but underlines how recently — and how narrowly — this fish was carved out from a wider, murkier group of look-alikes.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Amphilius frieli has the elongated, subcylindrical, loach-like body typical of Amphiliidae — flattened somewhat ventrally to help it hold station against current, with barbels around the mouth for feeling out food on the riverbed. FishBase records a maximum size of 5.5 in standard length, a modest size consistent with most Amphilius species.
The fin formula recorded for the species is 7 dorsal soft rays with no dorsal spine, and 8–10 anal soft rays with no anal spine. As with essentially all catfishes in this family, the skin is scaleless (naked), which is the single most important care fact for anyone who might keep or medicate it — scaleless fish absorb many medications, and especially copper-based treatments, far more readily than scaled species and need doses cut back accordingly.
Habitat
Amphilius frieli is known from the upper Congo River basin, with records from the Lufira River and Luapula River drainages spanning the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. These are flowing, well-oxygenated river systems typical of the wider Congo basin's upland tributaries, the kind of habitat loach catfishes are built for: rocky or gravelly substrates with steady current rather than still, sluggish water.
Detailed water chemistry for the type localities was not captured in the sources reviewed here, so specific temperature and pH figures are not given rather than guessed. What can be said with confidence from its family and basin is that this is a flowing-water African river fish, not a lake cichlid analogue and not a soft blackwater specialist by default — any care attempt should aim to replicate cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, current-swept conditions rather than assume acidic blackwater parameters.
Feeding
No feeding observations specific to Amphilius frieli were found in the sources reviewed. Amphiliidae as a family are nocturnal benthic omnivores and micro-predators, working the riverbed after dark for aquatic invertebrate life, detritus and small prey items using their barbels to locate food by touch rather than sight, and there is no reason to expect this species departs from that general pattern.
In a hypothetical aquarium setting, a fish built like this would be expected to take sinking pellets, frozen foods and other bottom-delivered prepared foods once acclimated, offered after lights-out so a nocturnal forager is not out-competed by more visible daytime tankmates. This is inference from family-level biology, not a documented observation for A. frieli itself.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Amphilius frieli in the literature reviewed. The species was described from museum/survey material collected for taxonomic revision, not from aquarium or field breeding observations, and nothing in the available sources describes how pairs find or court one another in the wild.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Amphilius frieli is undocumented. It is not a species reported in the aquarium trade, let alone bred in captivity, and the taxonomic sources that describe it focus on morphology and distribution rather than reproduction. Rather than default to a generic egg-scattering assumption, the honest statement is that the breeding mode, any parental care, and reproductive timing for this species are simply unknown from the sources available — a common situation for small, recently split Amphiliidae species that have never entered the hobby.
In the aquarium
Amphilius frieli is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it does not appear to be collected or traded, and no husbandry accounts exist. Anyone who did encounter it, whether through scientific collection or an unlikely trade mix-up, should size expectations to its real maximum of about 5.5 in SL — modest, but still a fish that needs a properly sized, current-swept riverine setup rather than a nano tank.
The two care facts that carry over reliably from its family are the ones that matter most: the skin is scaleless, so any medication — and copper-based treatments especially — should be dosed conservatively, as with loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned catfish; and like most small benthic river catfish it is likely to carry stiff pectoral spines that can lock and snag a net, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted if ever handled. Beyond that, this remains a species to leave in its native rivers rather than to plan an aquarium around.
Conservation
Amphilius frieli has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is classified Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2015 as part of a taxonomic split — many recently separated members of species complexes have no dedicated conservation assessment yet, distinct from having no concern at all.
Its documented range in the Lufira and Luapula drainages of the upper Congo system places it in a basin facing the general pressures common to African river catfishes — habitat alteration, water quality changes and, in some areas, mining runoff — but no species-specific population data or threat assessment exists to say more than that with confidence.
