Amphilius grandis was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1905. It belongs to the family Amphiliidae, the African loach-catfishes, and to the genus Amphilius, a group of small to medium rheophilic catfishes distributed across sub-Saharan African rivers and hill streams. The Catalog of Fishes treats Amphilius grandis as the valid combination, and the species has not been shuffled through other genera in the way many catfishes have.
The genus name Amphilius derives from Greek roots referring to the fish's smooth, scaleless build. The specific epithet grandis is Latin for "large" or "great" — at the time of its description this was the largest species known in the genus, a distinction later works have used to separate it from smaller relatives such as A. athiensis and A. krefftii in the same river system. A subsequent taxonomic revision of the Amphilius uranoscopus group in Kenya (published via ResearchGate) reaffirmed grandis as a distinct species tied to a specific type locality on the Chania River, a left-bank tributary of the Tana.
Morphology
Like all members of Amphiliidae, Amphilius grandis is completely scaleless, with soft, naked skin rather than the bony plates or scales seen in many other catfish families. The body is elongated and somewhat flattened, an adaptation shared across the family for clinging to and moving over stones in fast current, with a broad head, ventrally positioned mouth and barbels suited to grazing rock surfaces and probing crevices for food.
FishBase records a maximum size of 7 in standard length for this species, making it a genuinely large member of a genus whose other species are typically much smaller — consistent with the meaning of its name. Unlike many catfish families, Amphiliidae lack the stiff locking dorsal and pectoral spines seen in groups such as Synodontis or the ictalurids, but the scaleless skin still means the same medication caution applies: dose copper-based and many other treatments conservatively, as with loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned catfishes.
Habitat
Amphilius grandis is endemic to East Africa, known only from the upper Tana River basin and the upper Ewaso Ngiro basin in Kenya, with its type locality on the Chania River. It is a headwater and mid-reach stream species, living in the kind of clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water typical of African hillstream catfishes — clinging to stones and gravel in riffles rather than lying in slow, silty pools.
Because it depends on clear, oxygen-rich moving water, Amphilius grandis is considered an indicator species of good water quality in the streams it inhabits; its presence signals a healthy, unpolluted mid-reach river environment. This is not a soft, acidic blackwater fish or a still-water species — it is a cool, current-loving stream dweller, and its distribution across the Tana and Ewaso Ngiro basins is thought to reflect historical connections between these East African river systems.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data for Amphilius grandis has not been published, but its biology fits the pattern typical of Amphiliidae and of nocturnal benthic catfishes generally: a bottom-oriented micro-predator and grazer that forages over rocks and gravel, mostly after dark, for aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other small prey, along with algae and biofilm scraped from stone surfaces.

Data is sparse for this genus in general; unlike the well-studied bubble-nesting callichthyids or the internally fertilising driftwood catfishes, Amphiliidae have not been the subject of detailed captive-breeding studies. Rather than guess at a spawning mode, the honest position is that this species is essentially unknown in captivity and has not been bred in home aquaria.
In the aquarium
Amphilius grandis is not established in the aquarium trade and there is no meaningful husbandry record to draw on. Any prospective keeper should start from its wild biology: at up to 7 in SL it is a genuinely large Amphilius, not a nano fish, and would need a spacious tank sized to that real adult length rather than to the small dimensions typical of the genus. As a scaleless catfish it is medication-sensitive — copper-based treatments and many other medications should be dosed conservatively, exactly as with loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned fishes.
Its habitat — fast-flowing, cool, well-oxygenated, gravel-and-stone streams — points to strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen and pristine water quality as non-negotiable requirements, more like a hillstream loach setup than a typical community catfish tank. It is also likely nocturnal like other stream Amphiliidae, so cover during the day and feeding after dark would be prudent. Given the total absence of husbandry data, this is a species for a dedicated, experienced keeper willing to replicate torrent conditions rather than a routine aquarium subject.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Amphilius grandis as Least Concern, with the assessment dated June 2022. Its range is narrow — restricted to the upper Tana and Ewaso Ngiro river basins of Kenya — but the species is not currently considered threatened.
Because it is an indicator of clean, well-oxygenated headwater streams, its long-term outlook is tied to water quality in these specific Kenyan catchments: siltation, pollution, damming and other pressures on mid-reach rivers in the Tana and Ewaso Ngiro basins are the relevant long-term concerns for a narrow-range headwater endemic like this, even under a current Least Concern rating.
